Maxam and Gilbert developed a chemical method for DNA sequencing. Their technique involved breaking DNA strands at specific bases using chemical reactions and then analyzing the resulting DNA fragments on polyacrylamide gels to determine the DNA sequence. This method, known as the Maxam-Gilbert or chemical cleavage method, was one of the first developed for determining long DNA sequences.
