Mauna Loa is one of Hawaii's large volcanoes located on the Big Island of Hawaii. At 13,679 feet tall, it is the largest subaerial volcano in both volume and mass. Mauna Loa has erupted 33 times since its first recorded eruption in 1843, with its most recent eruption occurring in 1984. Despite its many eruptions, Mauna Loa has resulted in few fatalities due to its location being sparsely populated. Mauna Loa is classified as a shield volcano that has formed over half of the Big Island's landmass through numerous fluid lava flows.
