The 1859 eruption of Mauna Loa volcano was its largest eruption on record. It began on January 23 with an eruption on the northwest side of the volcano at 11,090 feet elevation. The eruption ultimately destroyed a coastal village and fishponds on the west coast of Hawaii. Mauna Loa has erupted 39 times since 1832, with 11 major explosions and many smaller eruptions. Its last eruption was in April 1984, which was very short. Mauna Loa means "Long Mountain" and is one of the most active volcanoes, estimated to be between 600,000 to 1,000,000 years old.

2. WHAT WAS MAUNA LOA’S BIGGEST ERUPTION?
The 1859 eruption of Mauna Loa began in the evening of January 23.
Following a brief top eruption, an outbreak occurred high on Mauna
Loa’s northwest side at the 3380 metres (11,090 feet) high. The
eruption ultimately destroyed a coastal village and fishponds at
Wainanal’I and Kiholo, on the west coast of the island.

3. WHAT I WOULD FEEL LIKE IF I WAS LIVING NEAR
MAUNA LOA?
I was sleeping soundly in my bed when the volcano started to erupt. It
took me by surprise and shook the floor rapidly whilst I tried to stand
up. When I got outside my parents were taking cover under a pile of
hay, I was terrified that time, the lava was pouring out of the volcano
named Mauna Loa, killing people with its burning,hot,chili lava and
deadly ashes.
