My plan right now is to work on my bachelor s degree. That is the first priority in my

The Call of the Zeitgeist
Jack London s The Call of the Wild is a novel written during the literary era of
Naturalism. It is about a pampered dog, Buck, who was thrown into the Alaskan
wilderness and becomes part of a team of sled dogs. Eventually, he becomes the
leader of a wolf pack. Naturalism takes place during a time in America known as the
Gilded Age. During the Gilded Age, the ideas of Social Darwinismtake hold. Social
Darwinism is a term scholars use to describe the practice of misapplying the
biological evolutionary language of Charles Darwin to politics, the economy, and
society ( Social Darwinism in the Gilded Age ). But how is London s novel a
zeitgeist of Naturalism? Jack London s The Call of the Wild is a zeitgeist of
Naturalism with its usage of Atavism, and a key ideology of Social Darwinism,
which is the survival of the fittest.
As mentioned before, London s novel is about Buck, who lives a comfortable life
on a Californian estate. However, Buck gets kidnapped by a gardener, so that he
could pay off his gambling debts, and sold to Alaskan sled drivers. When he
arrives in Alaska, a friend he made on the trip over, is killed horrifically when she
attempts to befriend a dog who attacks her. Another dog, Spitz, laughs at her death
and develops a rivalry with him. Over the course of the novel he starts to subvert
Spitz s command and ultimately fights him, winning and becoming the leader of
his sled team. However, the sled team gets new drivers by inexperienced people
joining the search for gold. Their inexperience causes some dogs to die from
exhaustion. On one trail, a man, John Thornton, tells the drivers that the ice is
dangerous because it is too thin. They refused to listen to him, but Buck was too
tired to move, causing one of the drivers to start clubbing him. Despite Buck s
beatings, he refused to get up, resulting in Thornton stepping in and taking him,
saving him from death. A new dog is put in place as leader and they move on the
trail, but they fall through the ice and into the frigid river where they presumably
die. Under Thornton s ownership, Buck has nothing much to do, save for small

It has guided me in so many ways in managing my time, to be more confident for
example, doing a presentation in front of an audience was something I never saw

production featured in the Amaturo Theater at Broward Center for the Performing
Arts. A Christmas Carol is about an elder man, Ebenezer Scrooge, who despises
Christmas. Scrooge is a wealthy man infatuated with the idea of money, which makes
him a very stingy, greedy, selfish, and egotistic human being. Working as a banker,
Scrooge has an employee named Bob Cratchit, who works long hours, for very little
pay. On Christmaseve, Cratchit gives hints for a raise or a bonus, and instead of
giving it to him, Scrooge goes on a rant about how Christmas is not a real holiday
and it is just an excuse for people to try to get extra money. Through his entire
speech, he keeps saying Bah Humbug . In the end of the speech, he asks Cratchit
tauntingly, I suppose you want Christmas off as well ?, but eventually, he gives

The cultural revolution is a strange period in Chinese history laced with intense
struggle and anguish. The cultural revolution mobilized the all of society to
compete for all opposing factions that they belonged to (Ong, 2016). Mao mobilized
the young people of society during a background of political turmoil, which helped
Mao to mobilize the students in order to enforce his political legitimacy and ideas
(Ong, 2016). Mao s charismatic authority created his personality cult and most
defiantly leant a helping hand in mobilizing the red guard movement (Ong, 2016)
(Weber, 1946) (Andreas, 2007). No matter which faction of the red guard they
belonged to, they all mobilized against their common enemy; the better off, upper

theory is the lack of political cohesion and party factionalism among the elites starting

elite factions and the prohibition of dissent which resulted in the creation of the Red
Guards, which in effect served as agent for the Maoist faction (Yang, 2000). The

Nearly 14.5 million Americans have had a history stint with some type of cancer
and were still alive on January 1, 2014(American Cancer Society, 2016). There will
be an estimated 1,685,210 new cancer cases and 595, 590 deaths in 2016 attibuted to
caner in the U.S. (American Cancer Society,2016 ) Those astonishing numbers do not
even account for the cancerpatients family and friends whose lives are also affected
this horrific disease. In order to get a glimpse of what a cancer patient has to go
though, I decided to read Stuart Scott s memoir, Every Day I Fight, by Larry Platt.
He is an ESPNanchor that was diagnosed with a rare form of Appendiceal Cancer. It
was a great book, and wanted to discuss the merits this book had on showing what...
He had to have an emergency appendectomy, consequently when they removed his
appendix he was diagnosed Appendiceal Cancer. The first thing that came to his
mind when he was told he had cancer was, Platt (2015) I m going to die, and I won
t be here for my daughters (p. 156). That pity party ended quickly, because he knew
that he had to be strong for his daughters. They were his inspiration to fight. After
the initial shock wore off, he began to scour the Internet in search of information
on his rare form of caner. The more that he read the stories and looked at the
statistics, the more this disease ate at him. From that day forth he vowed to never
go searching for information again. He asked his doctors never to tell him what
stage he had, how long they estimated he would live, or what percentage chance he

Why do I want to be a midwife?
Introduction
This essay examines the reasons why I want to pursue a career in midwifery. I
want to be a midwife because I believe that I would enjoy helping people,
specifically women, as they progress from pregnancy to child birth and then finally
the post natal stage. The qualities that I bring to the midwifery profession include
being able to work well under pressure and the ability to work with different types
of people; for example, working in a Rest Home (Alexander House) with their

Furthermore, the demands, as I understand them, of being a midwifery student and a
