In this presentation, Andy Snyder - Principal and NBBJ's Science & Education Practice leader, and Bruce Stevenson, VP of Research Operations at Nationwide Childrens Hospital - chart new relationships between strategic planning, programming, facility planning and scientific workplace features for biomedical research and translational medicine. The presentation sets out new best practices for navigating limited funding resources while preparing for new science directions and workforce needs, research space requirements, and advancements in scientific equipment, and they identify new ways to leverage data, metrics, analytical processes, and tools for improved program/infrastructure alignment.

He laid out the health challenges and some of the 'treatments' needed to assist everyone in our communities in being healthy.
New Urbanism is an urban planning and design movement that arose in the late 1980s in response to the spread of suburban sprawl. It advocates compact, walkable, mixed-use communities designed with pedestrians in mind to reduce dependence on cars. The key principles of New Urbanism include walkability, connectivity, mixed-use and diversity, mixed housing types, emphasis on public spaces and human-scale design, traditional neighborhood structure, increased density, green transportation options, and sustainability. The goals are to create healthier, more socially diverse communities with less traffic and a smaller environmental impact.
Perry Spring gave a presentation on applying lessons from sustainability success stories. He discussed regenerative development frameworks like biomimicry, cradle-to-cradle design, the 2030 Challenge for building energy reduction, distributed energy systems, eco-districts, and the Living Building Challenge. Specific projects highlighted included the Qualco bioenergy partnership, Dockside Green in Victoria, and the Northwest Maritime Center on the Olympic Peninsula. The conversation around 21st century data collection methods continues to evolve, but little work has been done to employ these methods to empower community stakeholders as part of the data collection process. This session will detail how DCPNI conducted a representative community survey using innovative data collection methods within an inclusive evaluation framework by employing community members as agents of community data collection. We will address the challenges faced in implementing a survey of significant scope, including time constraints, unknown literacy levels of survey participants, and inconsistent access to the internet, and detail how these challenges were overcome. The session will include a step-by-step demonstration of DCPNI's use of Key Survey Software to administer surveys on tablet devices with offline capability. We will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of our approach compared to alternatives and outline how the collected data will be utilized to benefit the community going forward.

The SDAT program brings together volunteer professionals to work with community members in Lubbock, Texas over 3 days to develop a vision plan. The team identified key opportunities to improve connectivity through parks and bike lanes, and proposed a master plan approach focusing on three districts: the Arts District, Broadway Commercial Corridor, and Depot District. Implementation strategies included building city capacity, transforming partnerships, expanding funding, embracing equitable development, and improving transportation.

The Da Vinci Collaborative presented findings, plans and proposals to the Dayton City Commission on June 4, 2014. As a partner in the DaVinci Collaborative, the City has been working with other organizations including CityWide to lay out a comprehensive community development plan to improve the Old North Dayton and McCook Field neighborhoods.
In early 2019 Habitat for Humanity in Paterson, NJ contacted the APA-NJ chapter to talk about their need for a team of volunteer planners. They wanted to create a concept for a green space along the Passaic River in the Northside Neighborhood of Paterson, NJ. They wanted two types of green space; a walkway along the river, called Riverwalk, and a sports fields in an area along the river dominated by abandoned and marginal industrial and residential properties. The Northside Neighborhood is across the Passaic River from Downtown Paterson.
The meeting will focus on Phase I improvements to Hearst Park funded for 2018, including a new graded field, irrigation, playground shade, walking trails, bio-filtration area, plantings, site furnishings, and ADA improvements. Phase II plans for 2019 include construction of a new pool and pool house while keeping work south of the existing tennis fence and away from heritage trees. Next steps include updating the ANC on the meeting, posting materials online, and procuring a general contractor for Phase I work beginning in early 2018 with a follow-up community meeting.
The Marie Reed Modernization Project is renovating the Marie Reed Community Learning Center in Washington D.C. with a budget of $61.5 million. Work began in Summer 2016 and is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2017. The project includes right-sizing classrooms, installing new lighting, ceilings, flooring, data connectivity and audiovisual equipment. Current work includes electrical and fire protection installations, pouring concrete, drywall and painting, pool changing room construction, and foundation wall waterproofing. Photos show progress on the grand stair, west addition steel columns, 4th floor tile work, and painted classroom doors.
