2. BACKGROUND
The importance of translation
Influence of culture towards language
Translation of literary works
Analysis of an Indonesian short story and its English
translationLangit Makin
Mendung (Ki Panji
Kusmin)
The Darkening Sky
(Marian De Walt
Morgan)
3. RESEARCH PROBLEMS
1. What are the strategies used in translating
the ST into the TT in terms of addressing
forms, idioms, and objects?
2. To what extent is the translation faithful to
the ST?
4. LITERATURE REVIEW
1. Translation Fidelity vs Transparency
Fidelity: the faithfulness of the translation
to the ST
Transparency: comprehensibility of the
translation to the TL readers
5. 2. Strategies in Translating Cultural-Specific
Elements (Pedersen, 2005)
a. SL-oriented
- Retention
- Specification (explicitation, addition)
- Direct translation
b. TL-oriented
- Generalisation
- Substitution (cultural substitution,
paraphrase)
- Omission
6. METHODOLOGY
Research object:
Ki Panji Kusmin’s Langit Makin Mendung
(ST) and Marian De Walt Morgan’s The
Darkening Sky (TT).
Limitation:
addressing terms, idioms, and cultural-
related objects
7. STEPS:
reading the ST and TT thoroughly.
taking the samples from the statements in
the ST and TT.
comparing the samples of the ST and TT.
classifying the translation strategies used in
each sample.
deciding the degrees of faithfulness of the
translation to the original text.
8. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION
Strategies in translating the ST
1. Cultural substitution
ST: “Kami tidak memaksa, Bung!”
TT: “We’re not forcing you, brother.”
ST: Agen-agen Naspro mati kutu.
TT: The Naspro agents were really in a fix.
2. Retention
ST: “Tidak, pak.”
TT: “No, pak.”
ST: Batu-batu mahal di sini. Satu kubik 200 rupiah...
TT: Stones are expensive here. One cubic meter for two
hundred rupiahs...
9. 3. Paraphrase
ST: Serangannya membabi buta tidak pandang bulu.
TT: It raged on with no respect for rank.
4. Generalisation
ST: Kenapa mereka hanya sekali pukul si tangan
panjang?
TT: Why did they only beat him up?
5. Direct translation
ST: Seperti maling kesiram air kencing , Togog berangkat
di malam dingin kota Bogor.
TT: Like a thief urinated upon, Togog left the city of Bogor
in the cold night
10. 6. Addition
ST: APC sekonyong-konyong melonjak harga.
TT: APC tablets shot up in price
ST: Sekilas bau jengkol mengambang
TT: Soon after, a jengkol-like odor rose up.
7. Explicitation
ST: ....tapi roti panggang bikinan Perancis di HI
TT: ....but toast prepared by a French chef in the
Hotel Indonesia
11. 8. Mixed strategies
- retention + direct translation
ST: Di atas Pasar Senen tercium bau timbunan
sampah menggunung, busuk dan mesum.
TT: Above Senen market hung the odor of
garbage heaps piled up in putrid, filthy mountains.
- generalisation + cultural substitution
ST: “Apa yang Paduka renungi?”
TT: "What are you reflecting on, Your
Excellency?"
12. Conclusion:
- The strategies used in the translation vary: SL-
oriented and TL-oriented.
- The degrees of fidelity depend on the strategy.
Suggestion:
In translating texts, one is expected to consider(Nida
in Venuti, 2000, p. 154):
a. nature of the message
b. purpose of the translator
c. type of the audience
