The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

The Art Pastor's Guide to Sabbath | Steve ThomasonSteve Thomason
What is the purpose of the Sabbath Law in the Torah. It is interesting to compare how the context of the law shifts from Exodus to Deuteronomy. Who gets to rest, and why?
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

6. Our Bases and Motivation
GOSPEL: “…to bring the good news to the poor to proclaim liberty to
captives and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the
Lord's year of favor.” Luke 4:18-19
“Jesus also said: I came that you may have LIFE, and have it in
abundance.” John 10:10
Catholic Social Teaching: “The task of evangelizing all people
constitutes the essential mission of the Church. Evangelizing is in fact
the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity. She
exists in order to evangelize, that is to say, in order to preach and teach,
to be the channel of the gift of grace, to reconcile sinners with God, and
to perpetuate Christ’s sacrifice in the Mass.” Evangelii Nuntiandi #14
“The Church is bound as a mother to give to these children of hers an
education by which their whole life can be imbued with the spirit of Christ and
at the same time do all she can to promote for all peoples the complete
perfection of the human person, the good of earthly society and the building of
a world that is more human.”
Pope Paul VI, “Declaration on Christian Education”, 1965
ABG2007
7. CEI MISSION &
THRUSTS
“…Reflecting on the mission entrusted to it by the Lord,
the Church gradually develops its pastoral instruments so
that they may become ever more effective in proclaiming
the Gospel and promoting total human formation. The
Catholic school is one of these pastoral instruments; its
specific pastoral service consists in mediating between
faith and culture: being faithful to the newness of the
Gospel…”

19. KEY ROLE OF TEACHERS IN
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
“…let teachers recognize that the Catholic school depends upon
them almost entirely for the accomplishment of its goals and
programs. They should therefore be very carefully prepared so
that both in secular and religious knowledge they are equipped
with suitable qualifications and also with a pedagogical skill that
is in keeping with the findings of the contemporary world.
Intimately linked in charity to one another and to their students
and endowed with an apostolic spirit, may teachers by their life
as much as by their instruction bear witness to Christ, the
unique Teacher.”
- “Declaration on Christian Education” (Gravissimum Educationis) #8
Pope Paul VI, 1965
ABG2007
20. “To summarize: The Lay Catholic educator is a person who
exercises a specific mission within the Church by living, in faith, a
secular vocation in the communitarian structure of the school:
with the best possible professional qualifications, with an
apostolic intention inspired by faith, for the integral formation of
the human person, in a communication of culture, in an exercise of
that pedagogy which will give emphasis to direct and personal
contact with students, giving spiritual inspiration to the
educational community of which he or she is a member, as well as
to all the different persons related to the educational community.
To this lay person, as a member of this community, the family and
the Church entrust the school's educational endeavour. Lay
teachers must be profoundly convinced that they share in the
sanctifying, and therefore educational mission of the Church; they
cannot regard themselves as cut off from the ecclesial complex.”

21. CATHOLIC EDUCATORS’ VOCATION
“The vocation of every Catholic educator includes the work of
ongoing social development: to form men and women who will be
ready to take their place in society, preparing them in such a way
that they will make the kind of social commitment which will enable
them to work for the improvement of social structures, making
these structures more conformed to the principles of the Gospel…”

Editor's Notes
Note: “ See-Judge-Act” is the three vital elements and stages of the “Review of Life” or “ROL” developed by Joseph Cardinal Cardijn in the 1930s and still being used by the Young Christian Workers (YCW) now known as “Review of Life and Worker Action” (ROLWA). In the book published in 1980, “Social Analysis: Linking Faith and Justice,” authors Joe Holland and Peter Henriot S.J., discuss the principles of Christian justice as contained in the Scriptures and in Catholic social teaching, and how students might put those principals into action in the world around them. They call their approach, “the circle of faith-in-action,” to emphasize the relationship between faith and action in doing justice. The authors call their three steps Awareness, Analysis and Action. The Federation of Asian Bishop Conference (FABC) through the Bishop Institute for Social Action (BISA VII) formally endorsed the “Pastoral Cycle” as its methodology towards a liberative spirituality that expected to transform all social action into evangelization, pastoral renewal and the milieu of God experience. It was later refined and called “Pastoral Spiral” in order to emphasize the continuous deepening process involved.
