This study evaluated potential side effects of continuous hypertonic 3% saline (CHS) as a maintenance fluid in patients with brain injuries like traumatic brain injury or stroke. Patients in intensive care for over 4 days with low Glasgow Coma Scale and high intracranial pressure received either 3% CHS or 0.9% saline. The incidence of moderate and severe hypernatremia was higher in the CHS group. However, the study concluded that CHS administration is safe if sodium levels are closely monitored.
