Answer any three (3) questions.

1 Consider the IKEA case study: Using Hofstede’s framework how would
you define the Swedish culture and how did this cultural background
provide the company with various advantages in the way the company
conducts its business?
2 Consider the Case of the Floundering Expatriate case study: In this
case study we can identify several cross-cultural problems. What are
these problems and why did they arise? How could they have been
avoided?
3 Consider the situation of an American manager being posted to his first
overseas assignment in Sri Lanka. This is his first visit to Asia. What
cultural difficulties do you think he will be faced with in this new
assignment? How should he prepare for the assignment and what
supports should the company provide?
4 Discuss how cross-cultural teams can be a positive influence in a
company. Identify and discuss some difficulties with cross-cultural
teams.
5 The senior management team in your company is scheduled to
undertake a series of negotiations with a team of visiting Japanese/
Korean/German/US executives (choose one of these nationalities for
your answer). The management team has no previous experience in
either negotiating or interacting with this nationality.
As a person who is regarded as having studied the culture of
(Japan/Korea/Germany/the USA), you are required to write a report,
setting out your advice on the preparations you consider important so
as to make these negotiations a success.
6 Discuss Hofstede’s contribution to the study of national cultures. Apply
Hofstede’s cultural dimensions to any culture of your choice. What are
the implications for the management of business in this culture?
7 Does leadership vary across cultures? Please explain.
8 Write brief notes on 3 of the following:
i. Culture and Time
ii. Cultural Norms
iii. Cultural Convergence
iv. Ethnocentrism
v. Eye Contact
vi. Explicit versus Implicit Communication

  • 2. 1 Consider the IKEA case study: Using Hofstede’s framework how would you define the Swedish culture and how did this cultural background provide the company with various advantages in the way the company conducts its business? 2 Consider the Case of the Floundering Expatriate case study: In this case study we can identify several cross-cultural problems. What are these problems and why did they arise? How could they have been avoided? 3 Consider the situation of an American manager being posted to his first overseas assignment in Sri Lanka. This is his first visit to Asia. What cultural difficulties do you think he will be faced with in this new assignment? How should he prepare for the assignment and what supports should the company provide? 4 Discuss how cross-cultural teams can be a positive influence in a company. Identify and discuss some difficulties with cross-cultural teams. 5 The senior management team in your company is scheduled to undertake a series of negotiations with a team of visiting Japanese/ Korean/German/US executives (choose one of these nationalities for your answer). The management team has no previous experience in either negotiating or interacting with this nationality. As a person who is regarded as having studied the culture of (Japan/Korea/Germany/the USA), you are required to write a report, setting out your advice on the preparations you consider important so as to make these negotiations a success. 6 Discuss Hofstede’s contribution to the study of national cultures.
