Cause Landslide due to heavy rain

Geographical coordinates of the village are-
latitude 19°9′40″N and longitude73°41′18″E .
The hill slopes at the levels above and below the
village were partially converted to terraces for paddy
cultivation.
Malin village has a UNESCO World Heritage Site and
is one of the 8th ‘hottest hotspots’ of biological
diversity in the world.
Residual laterite & bauxite ores are also found in the
southern hills.
Common crops in this region are- Rice & finger
millets.
On 30 July 2014, a landslide occurred in the village
of malin in the Ambegaon taluka of the Pune district in
Maharashtra, India.
The landslide, hit early in the morning, caused by a
burst of heavy rainfall & killed at least 151 people.
The landslide was 1st observed by a bus driver
that the village had been over run with mud.
In addition to those dead, more than 160 people and 44 separate houses.
Rains continued after the landslide making rescue efforts difficult.
NATURAL CAUSES
Landslide caused by heavy
rainfall, with the village
receiving rain on 29 July &
the downpour continuing
throughout the following
day.
The environmental
destruction that resulted in
the landslide.
Lowering of water table in
the last few years & sudden
rise observed due to heavy
rainfall.
MAN-MADE CAUSES
Deforestation also
contributing to the landslide.
Changing agricultural
practices that the villagers had
recently shifted from cultivation
of rice & finger millet to wheat,
which contributed to the
instability of the hills.
The construction of the nearly
Dimbhe Dam ten years ago.
The instability of the hillsides
was due to the construction
activities.
Initial reports stated that the landslide
had killed 17 people, officials expected
the death toll to exceed 150.
As of 4 August 2014, the death toll
had reached 134. the bodies so far
recovered were of 50 men, 64 women
& 20 children.
The natural drainage shouldn’t
be distributed or block on the
slope.
For support wall wider base &
slightly incline (towards hill) are
to be provided.
Care should be taken for anything that may fall downward.
Exposing a very high vertical face should be avoided.
Avoid adding load very close to the edge of the slope.
You should build an emergency kit & make a
family communication plan.
Avoid river valleys and low lying areas.
Listen to local news stations, radio for warnings
of heavy rainfall.
Curl into a tight ball & protect your head if escape is
not possible.
