Applying User-Centered Design (UCD) to Intranet ProjectsIntranätverk
"Setting out to create a joyful intranet experience, the team at Swiss Mobiliar focused on usability and user experience throughout the redesign. The result is a site that lets users find content and company expertise, connect with others, and enjoy a personalized site experience,” said usability expert Jakob Nielsen about the Mobiliar intranet. In his presentation, Björn shows which UCD methods lead to success and should be applied in intranet projects.

DevOps documentation: Manage documentation in a shared ownership environmentGeorge Lewis
DevOps encapsulates the collaboration between Development and Operations teams to create, deliver and operate a product or service. But in such a collaborative structure, who is responsible for the documentation?
Technical authors face a challenge when working with collaborative structures: knowledge is created in the team with the right specialty, not necessarily in the team which owns the document.
As organisations seek to deliver products and services to market at an ever quicker pace, collaborative structures such as DevOps are becoming more common. To make the issue more challenging, these teams may be spread across different organisations and countries.
I shall share doc-department’s experience working with DevOps organisation and how we overcame these challenges with an Open DevOps documentation approach that supports collaboration and communications across teams.
Discover a programme that brings together students, entrepreneurs & community groups to develop creative solutions to local challenges.
We help train students to co-design solutions from uncovering local needs with the community to working with them to develop projects that can be taken forward.
We evaluate the insights and impact of the needs & solutions to help public services better understand how to support communities to help each other & use technology.

Presentation delivered at an Intranet event in Zurich, September 2012. Explains 3 business drivers of an intranet and the 5 top tips to deliver a successful intranet.
What drives a great intranet user experience? Are we keeping it simple enough for our employees? Is the intranet user experience engaging enough for them to use it excitedly, and not just to complete the task?
Intranets have become more than just branding, graphics, leader messages, or news. Enabling employees to find relevant information is a critical use case for intranet success, so developing a consistent user experience is a vital step in deploying a successful Intranet. A resource-limited user experience team often focuses on the client-facing systems. That leaves the internal designs to evolve slowly, often without care or thought. Over time, this creates costs for the organization, as the intranet becomes inept and inhibits the employees from doing critical functions.
Enterprise are looking for intranet UX strategies that increase employee productivity, communication, and satisfaction. In this webinar we will capture some key aspects on what it takes to have amazing UX to the employees by just keeping it simple and follow basic usability guidelines. You will learn how to best support your organization, enable employee communication, and increase employee productivity and satisfaction by improving the intranet’s usability.
The webinar discusses the following in details:
• Intranet UX: An Introduction
• Understanding employees' needs, workflow, and tasks
• User-focused intranet design process
• Redesigning an intranet and catalysts for redesign
• Design Trends & Best Practices

Why developing research software is like a startup (and why this matters)Neil Chue Hong
When we think about the software used in research and science, we might think of the commercial packages with thousands of users, or the millions of lines of code that support experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider, or indeed the millions of scripts written every day by researchers across the world to undertake simple tasks. What is clear is that modern research relies on software: a recent survey of UK researchers conducted by the Software Sustainability Institute reported that 92% of researchers used software, and 69% could not conduct their work without it. Millions of dollars are invested each year in supporting a quasi-industry of software production, with the equivalent of the full-spectrum from large multinationals and tiny cottage industries, but little is known about whether this is efficient or indeed appropriate. This talk will examine the similarities between the development of software in the research environment and the lifecycle of technology startup companies. It will also consider the driving factors behind adoption of software and the impact of software sustainability on the ability to conduct research.

Is SharePoint working for you, or are you working for SharePoint..?
Why do many end users cringe when they hear the word 'SharePoint'? It's not because SharePoint is a bad platform (quite the contrary actually), it's because of their past experiences with SharePoint.
This webinar explored how you can make your users fall in Love with SharePoint and drive end user adoption in your organization!
You started out with the best of intentions. Then things started to go wrong.
You wanted to deploy an intranet solution to improve communication and collaboration. You had dreams of engaged employees easily sharing and managing their content. But then things started to go wrong. If your intranet is failing, it's likely that your intentions were sound, but your expectations were unrealistic.
In this webinar Daniel Cohen-Dumani, founder and CEO of Portal Solutions and OneWindow Workplace, tells us about the 7 Signs Your Intranet is Failing (...And How to Fix It).
We discussed:
- The seven signs of a failing intranet
- Using the right tool(s) for your organization's needs
- Governance planning
- Setting goals and measuring ROI
- The overwhelming importance of having a plan
Key features to move Yammer users from casual to power users. Yammer adoption continues to rapidly expand, but like any other collaboration platform, most people understand the basic capabilities yet fail to dig down into the "power user" capabilities that help any user to move from causal use to high-productivity. This session walks through 15 tips and tricks to help participants get the most out of the Yammer platform.
The presented online cooperation platform was developed to give cluster managers and other cluster stakeholders access to current information and trends. It is set up in form of a Social Network on the topic ‘cluster management’ and offers users/members a central information tool, where knowledge is documented and exchange is fostered. Therefore it is an efficient way to foster exchange between experts, to build up a repository of knowledge including success stories and to present the topic to a broader public.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
