At Techstartupday 2013 we gave a workshop on the importance of digital product design for startups and digital product managers. Together with Ontoforce we presented a behind the scene case study about the process of designing and building the Disqover platform.
An effective intranet design is one that is perceived as being of value by both employees and stakeholders. There is a significant amount of planning involved when designing an intranet experience no matter if it is a new build, redesign or new feature. It typically requires cross-department collaboration, management of a multidisciplinary team and implementation, marketing/communication and training plan.
Solving Today's HR, Communication & Leadership Challenges With Microsoft 365 ...Richard Harbridge
Microsoft 365 Intranets are capable of a lot more than just getting key corporate messaging out.
Internal Communications leaders have shifted from editors to enablers. With that shift comes a change from enforcing messaging to empowering and amplifying excellent communications and great ideas throughout the business. From preboarding to offboarding, HR's challenges are harder today than they have ever been before. Naturally, how these leaders leverage the digital workplace has changed as well, especially in how they leverage technology to achieve more with less.
Join our Product Offering Lead, Anders Fagerlund, and the CTO of 2toLead, Richard Harbridge, a Microsoft MVP and internationally recognized expert on Microsoft 365 and the Digital Workplace. This webinar will explore ideas and solutions that HR and Corporate Communications have embraced to improve how, where, and when they engage with employees.
We will discuss:
How to best leverage SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer for modern communications.

In this session we will explore:
• The benefits Office 365 brings to an intranet...
• Where the issues and challenges will lie...
• When and how you may integrate Office 365 with your existing intranet and digital workplace today.
The future of designing collaboration experiences #spsottawaKanwal Khipple
Imagine a future where silo'd departments and legacy processes don’t stand in our way. Today’s collaboration needs go from complex collaboration portals to simple innovation hubs and most importantly need to work for our devices. Designing portals to enable a new kind of collaboration and communication is an absolute necessity today.
For the past couple years, I’ve had the opportunity to study how successful teams collaborate and have helped to transform the way teams work and collaborate together. In this session, I'll share what I’ve learned about making effective cross-discipline collaboration possible, and leave you with actionable approaches you can use to unite your team's communication and collaboration needs.
IN THIS SESSION YOU’LL HEAR:
• Why cross-discipline collaboration is essential to future-ready digital design, and how you can play a key role in creating the cross-departmental teams to enable innovation
• Real-life industry examples of what it takes to make effective collaboration possible
• Practical techniques you can use to bridge silos, increase productivity, and deliver better outcomes for your teams
Yesterdays intranet tomorrows, digital workplace SocialChorus
What’s the role of an intranet in the modern workplace? What does the modern workplace now look like? The days of an intranet as the one-stop-shop internal website have long gone. But as our ways of working, and the make-up of our workforces change, it’s not always clear what the scope of a contemporary intranet should be.
See the slides from our webinar with guest speaker Sam Marshall, of ClearBox Consulting, and SocialChorus' co-founder Nicole Alvino, will untangle the various purposes of an intranet, and look at how the needs of a mobile, deskless and contingent workforce can be met.

GUUG FFG 2017 - DevOps for Everybody - A Workplace Strategy for the Digital AgeSchlomo Schapiro
How should our internal IT look in order to be a driving force for a company’s success in the digital age? This proposal is based on all my learnings from the previous 15 years and especially the Agile and DevOps revolution in IT. It takes the concept of a Product Development Organization to apply everywhere and provides a sure path to increase productivity and improve culture through technology. Transforming Corporate IT into a Workplace product takes internal IT out of the proverbial basement and puts it in the front of the internal value chain. Most of the standard tooling for product development also fits the Workplace product. This proposal is written for a typical company that employs both modern web technologies like G Suite and cloud services as well as traditional technologies like Microsoft Office and data centers.
SharePointFest Konferenz 2016 - Creating a Great User Experience in SharePointMarc D Anderson
Building solutions in SharePoint isn’t simply about getting the functionality right based on the business requirements. Developers must think about the entire user experience (UX), which goes far beyond the technical aspects of the solution. It’s no longer good enough to meet the specifications. We must exceed them in terms of usability. This takes many developers out of their comfort zones and into the messy world of end users. In this interactive session, we’ll discuss questions like:* How should the user feel when they use this piece of functionality?* Will they perceive that this functionality saves them work or creates new work?* How will the functionality compare to what they see on the consumer Web?* How can we use technologies which haven’t historically been considered mainstream SharePoint developer tools (like jQuery and CSS) to make SharePoint feel more like the sites people love? We’ll look at good and bad examples from SharePoint itself as well as specific customizations.
Modern HR, Communication, & Leadership Best Practices With Microsoft 365Richard Harbridge
Today Intranets are about more than just getting key corporate messaging out. Communications have changed just as IT and HR have changed. Communications leaders have shifted from editors to enablers. Communication leaders are moving from enforcing messaging to empowering and amplifying excellent communications and great ideas throughout the business. Human Resources leaders are shifting from hiring/firing and policy enforcement to performance and engagement. From preboarding to offboarding, HR's challenges are harder today than they have ever been before. Naturally, how these leaders leverage the digital workplace has changed, especially in how they leverage technology to achieve more with less. Join Richard Harbridge, a Microsoft MVP and internationally recognized expert on Microsoft 365 and the Digital Workplace, as he explores ideas and solutions that HR and Corporate Communications have embraced to improve how, where, and when they engage with employees. We will discuss how to best leverage SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer for modern communications and take advantage of AI and Microsoft technology to accelerate and improve key communication and content. The technology, best practices, and approach can make all the difference, and it has, for some organizations, led to more significant HR, Intranet, and communications success.
Getting started on an intranet software deployment project can be a confusing and daunting task. But don‘t worry, we are going to address common issues and all of the questions you may have and explain the most important factors to make your intranet a success.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

Globus Compute wth IRI Workflows - GlobusWorld 2024Globus
As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.
Developing Distributed High-performance Computing Capabilities of an Open Sci...Globus
COVID-19 had an unprecedented impact on scientific collaboration. The pandemic and its broad response from the scientific community has forged new relationships among public health practitioners, mathematical modelers, and scientific computing specialists, while revealing critical gaps in exploiting advanced computing systems to support urgent decision making. Informed by our team’s work in applying high-performance computing in support of public health decision makers during the COVID-19 pandemic, we present how Globus technologies are enabling the development of an open science platform for robust epidemic analysis, with the goal of collaborative, secure, distributed, on-demand, and fast time-to-solution analyses to support public health.

Innovating Inference - Remote Triggering of Large Language Models on HPC Clus...Globus
Large Language Models (LLMs) are currently the center of attention in the tech world, particularly for their potential to advance research. In this presentation, we'll explore a straightforward and effective method for quickly initiating inference runs on supercomputers using the vLLM tool with Globus Compute, specifically on the Polaris system at ALCF. We'll begin by briefly discussing the popularity and applications of LLMs in various fields. Following this, we will introduce the vLLM tool, and explain how it integrates with Globus Compute to efficiently manage LLM operations on Polaris. Attendees will learn the practical aspects of setting up and remotely triggering LLMs from local machines, focusing on ease of use and efficiency. This talk is ideal for researchers and practitioners looking to leverage the power of LLMs in their work, offering a clear guide to harnessing supercomputing resources for quick and effective LLM inference.

Subjective - what appeals to one person won’t to another
Complex - design is about more than look or brand: covering

25. Always start with the ‘why’.
Why are we doing this? What is the business
problem we’re trying to solve? Then, keep that
front-of-mind at every stage of design and
development.

Head of Product Design (UI/UX), Interact
26. Understanding the ‘why’ driving your project,
and the business challenges you’re trying to

within your business.
27. Understanding the ‘why’ driving your project,
and the business challenges you’re trying to
solve, will ensure your intranet not only looks

within your business.
Design doesn’t begin with look and feel: it
begins with the purpose.
28. To do:
§ Identify business challenges or
objectives and intranet could
support
§ Evaluate existing tools
§ Research pain-points of different
departments, individuals,
communities
§ Prioritize needs or objectives
§ Create your opportunity statement
29.
30. The key objectives of the project are to replace the existing intranet with a new
one which:
§ Promotes organizational culture and reflects ‘one’ NSPCC
§ Enables staff to share stories, inspires and engages staff, celebrates success
and demonstrates impact
§ Encourages and facilitates learning, communications and collaboration
§ Builds organizational knowledge
§ Helps staff to do their jobs
§ Improves business efficiency
31. How did the NSPCC
objectives translate?
They translated a vision into design through:
§ Prominent use of news content widgets to share
stories, celebrate success, and inspire staff
§ Quicklinks to top tools, helping staff to do their
jobs and be more efficient
§ Visual campaign spotlight widgets to facilitate
learning
§ Great and consistent use of branding, aligned to
external brand, to promote its organizational
culture
…and more!
33. Intranet design isn’t
about the product. It’s
about the people.

Steven Osbourne
Senior Strategist, Interact
34. Great design is all about your users. They’re the ones
engaging with it on a day-to-day basis: they’re also,
therefore, the best judges and informants when it
comes to design.
So, ask them.
35. To do:
§ Identify user communities and their
needs or requirements
§ Define your audience and create
personas
§ Consider different abilities and
accessibility issues
§ Determine how to personalize and
tailor content
36. The personas were a key part of our build and we regularly
referred to them as we built our navigation and content.
Involving the whole redevelopment team in their creation
helped embed them into our build.
We have continued to refer to them and have recently started
interviewing staff again to make sure we understand the
changing organization and keep the intranet user-focused.
“
37. How can intranet
personas help?
§ Stand in as a semi-fictitious representation
for real users, created from real knowledge
and research
§ Help you understand user needs, behaviors
and experiences
§ Easy to keep front-of-mind to help guide
design decisions
§ Focus on what users will actually use,
rather than what they think they want
38. of online users get frustrated with websites
when content is not personalized. Employees
are bringing those same expectations into
the workplace.
39. Use attributes such as
tagging or keywords
within your information
architecture, making
your intranet intelligent
Create tailored
homepages for
specific groups
Create persona
groups/communities
based on defined
attributes
Use third-party
integrations and
dynamic content
widgets to populate
content areas

employees and technologies in an ecosystem that
facilitates agile ways of working, improves
engagement and delivers an exceptional

45. The average number of different
applications used by enterprises as part
of their digital workplace.
46. To do:
§ Determine how staff will find and connect
with each other
§ Integrate your intranet with existing tools
and systems or consider how they’ll work
together
§ Consider using your intranet to sign into
other applications with Single Sign-On
(SSO)
§ Adopt a ‘mobile first’ approach to design
and ensure all employees – regardless of
device or location – can access it
47. With Interact, our office in Houston can see what colleagues are
working on in Mexico City and Hong Kong, giving us all a feeling
of pride in the organization and the work we do together.
It’s much easier to find and communicate with employees globally
and there are great knowledge-sharing features such as team sites
and forums that help us all work together more effectively.
“
48. How does IIE connect its
digital workplace?
IIE ensured its global staff could stay
connected through:
§ A mobile-first design and use of the mobile app
for on-the-ground connectivity
§ Use of Single Sign-On to business critical systems
such as Concur for expenses
§ Centralized hosting of core business materials
such as branding collateral on the intranet, rather
than a DMS
§ Use of Forums for company-wide collaboration,
FAQs, ideation: reducing email dependency and
creating a single point of reference for staff

HOW do we design
winning intranet
journeys and
experiences?
51. Keep it simple. Design doesn’t rule all, and
shouldn’t come at the cost of function, purpose, or
user experience.
An intranet, like any website, is there to serve people
with information. Design should support that goal,
not stand in the way.
“
Peter Jones
Pre-Sales Specialist (Design Team), Interact
52. Most organizations have huge knowledge
assets. An intranet should be designed to
make it logical, intuitive, and easy for
employees to find what they need.
53. Most organizations have huge knowledge
assets. An intranet should be designed to
make it logical, intuitive, and easy for
employees to find what they need.
Managing large volumes of content, users,
information and requirements can be tricky: but
it’s also crucial to your intranet success.
54. Failing to pay
attention to the user
experience when
designing your
intranet can result in
poor adoption.
55. To do:
§ Conduct a ‘content audit’ of existing
and proposed content: what you
have, it’s quality/relevance, who
owns it, where it lives
§ Map out content to be made
redundant and any gaps
§ Sort the content by grouping it
§ Test your proposed structure and
refine it from user feedback
56. When designing your intranet, it’s important to do an audit of the different
types of content you need. Typical types of business content include:
HR, IT or business policies and documentation
Orientation and onboarding support
How to: guides or support for everyday tasks
Team-specific content
Administrative tasks or automated processes
User-friendly or user-generated content
Access to external content
Brand and culture material
Top-down communication and recognition
Bottom-up communication channels
57. Grouping and mapping out your content
forms your information architecture.
From this, you can do user testing to check
how easy information is to find.
You’ll also need to consider the language your staff use –
is it an e-roster, a rota, or a schedule? – and how to create
governance about updating, reviewing, approving and
removing outdated content.

59. We used our organizational structure to order content on our
previous intranet, but this didn’t always reflect users’ needs. With
Flo, that’s changed, and the most commonly used content takes
precedence, making the experience much faster and more intuitive.
We’ve also scaled down from 5,000 pages to just 1,200 pages. It was
a huge amount of work rewriting and consolidating the content, but
it’s been well worth it in terms of navigability and user experience.
“
60. How did Kent Community
Health NHS Trust structure
its intranet?
When redefining the structure and
architecture for its intranet ‘Flo’, the Trust
completely reimagined its approach.
§ Content is grouped by topic, theme or action,
rather than department
§ For example the ‘Worklife section, pictured here,
combines all crucial information about working
at the Trust – including HR information, payroll
or finance information, benefits and more
§ Quicklinks to high-use areas signpost users to
the areas they need to visit most
62. Brand identity is about more than design. It’s that
‘certain something’ that identifies or differentiates
you, sets you apart.
It encompasses the personality of your intranet, the
values you project, and the perception or experience
that creates.

Intranet Designer, Interact
63. The look and feel of your intranet are a
powerful tool for engaging users, creating
a sense of pride or ownership, and
communicating your culture.
64. The look and feel of your intranet are a
powerful tool for engaging users, creating
a sense of pride or ownership, and
communicating your culture.
An internal brand that translates the
objectives for your intranet, your overall
vision as an organization, and the culture
you’re trying to build, can be challenging.
65. Brand identity is normally achieved through a combination of
different elements, including:
Your intranet name and logo
Brand color palette
Fonts and typography
Page designs and style sheets
Icons, calls-to-action, and buttons
Language or tone of voice
Structure, IA, and navigation
Content or information you choose to host
66. To do:
§ Align with external brand
§ Define tone of voice
§ Give your intranet a name and logo
§ Create an intranet identity or character
§ Determine brand elements such as
typography, color palette, icons
§ Create templates or style sheets and host
brand materials on intranet
§ Establish guidance around brand use
67. The amount employee turnover can be
reduced by investing in employer brand:
including your internal brand.
68. How Acorns brought its
brand to life
This children’s hospice non-profit set out to
align its intranet with its external brand.
§ Replicated core brand colors and ‘brush effect’
around buttons or modules
§ Replicated the use of the acorn in the logo for
continuity, but played on the name to give the
intranet a unique identity
§ More fun, informal, and child-like typography
§ Use of children’s drawings throughout, to
focus users on the purpose and mission of the
organization – the children it helps

71. While the sea of options may feel overwhelming, it’s a
practice worth getting right.
Investing upfront in a user-focused design can have a huge
impact on the long-term success of your intranet.
