MAIN
TASK
PREPARATION &
EVALUATING OUR TARGET
AUDIENCE
WHAT IS OUR TASK?
Our main task is to make the titles and opening of a new fiction
film, to last a maximum of two minutes.
All video and audio material must be original, produced by the
candidate(s), with the exception of music or audio effects from a
copyright-free source.
Key areas
• Planning and research evidence
• Research into similar products and a potential target audience.
• Work on shot lists, layouts, drafting, scripting or
storyboarding.
• Organisation of actors, locations, costumes or props.
• Time management is excellent
• Use of digital technology or ICT in the presentation.
• Communication skills.
• Care in the presentation of the research and planning.
MARK SCHEME
The main task itself
Level 1 0–23 marks—The work for the main task is possibly incomplete.
There is minimal evidence in the work of the creative use of the areas
Level 2 24–35 marks—There is evidence of a basic level of ability in the
creative use of some of the areas
Level 3 36–47 marks—There is evidence of proficiency in the creative
use of many of the areas
Level 4 48–60 marks—There is evidence of excellence in the creative
use of most of the areas
Key areas
• Producing material appropriate for the target audience and task.
• Using titles appropriately according to institutional conventions.
• Using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set.
• Shooting material appropriate to the task set; including controlled use
of the camera, attention to framing, variety of shot distance and close
attention to mise-en-scene.
• Using editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer and making
selective and appropriate use of shot transitions and other effects.
WHY IS THE TARGET
AUDIENCE IMPORTANT?
In the commercial industry of Film making it is important to
distinguish your target audience. The motive why it is so important
to know your target audience is because it will help when
determining what content is to be included. For example, older
spectators may favour a dissimilar editing style to a younger
audience. This means that there must be a certain understanding of
your target audience i.e. what film genres they like, type of filming
style, editing style etc. This understanding will eventually mean a
better revenue than if you came up with a story and tried to
advertise without any awareness of your target audience.
Below is a Pie Chart I found on Google of the breakdown of the
target audience in the horror genre:
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE

 Our film opening will be aimed at teenagers to young
adults; the main reason for this is purely the fact that we
can base our opening on what we (as teenagers) would
  like to watch.
 From asking the media class and friends of ours of similar
ages, we found that our target audience mostly preferred
  thrillers, horrors and comedies.
 However we intend to conduct a more focused survey to
find which out of these 3 genres our target audience enjoy
  more.
STORYBOARD 1
LOCATION SCOUTING
We decided that
London that would
be a good location
due to the already
established Mise en
