An adjective describes how something
'is'. For this reason, we often use the verb 'to
be' when using adjectives. Adjectives are
used to describe nouns.

For example:
• Surface tension is an interesting concept.
• This is the colorful milk.

Milk consists of a lot of different types of
molecules, including fat, protein, sugars,
vitamins, and minerals. If you had just touched a
clean cotton swab to the milk, not much would
have happened.

Surface tension is an interesting concept,
like molecules like to stick together. Milk has
surface tension, just like water, but unlike water, it
is high in fat and is solid colored. As the coloring
is less dense, it does not mix into the milk unless
stirred. It remains separate. Dish soap breaks
down the fat of the milk and decreases the
surface tension in milk.

ingredient to turn the milk into a swirling color
wheel. Here is what you do.

1. Pour enough milk onto a plate to cover the bottom.
2. Drop food coloring onto the milk.
3. Dip a cotton swab in dishwashing detergent liquid.
4. Touch the coated swab to the milk in the center of the plate.
5. Don't stir the milk; it isn't necessary. The colors will swirl on
their own as soon as the detergent contacts the liquid.
