Brief 3 – Magazines and online
Gaming magazine
What I plan to use on my front covers
For my front covers I have decided to incorporate my knowledge of the codes and
conventions of typical gaming/entertainment magazines alongside my own original ideas.
The things I plan to do include:
- Like most magazines, the title will be central and at the top of the frame, either behind
or covering the top of the model's head. The title will also be in all caps and the
typography, as with the rest of the text on the front cover, will be sans-serif.
- The models will be framed with a mid-body shot with the face being the focus of
the frame.
- Lots of subheadings that follow a similar typography to that of the main title.
- The subheadings and other text will also follow a column format that is set through
the alignment of the heading and its placement in the frame.
- There will be a consistent two tonal colour scheme in each magazine cover with the
change being in the block colour. The house style will be maintained through consistent
formatting and typography over both covers.
- There will be a direct mode of address established with most of the models looking
directly at the reader.
What I plan to use on my content's pages
For my content's pages, I again have decided to incorporate my knowledge of the codes
and conventions of typical gaming/entertainment magazine content's pages, alongside my
own original ideas. The things I plan to do include:
- Like most content's pages the title will be in the top left of the page. This is due to the fact
that the reader should know what magazine they are reading already due to having to have
bypassed the front page.
- My magazine will have a tendency towards the esports scene and the aspect of people,
therefore the images in my content's pages will be of people in the gaming scene with a
variety of shot types.
- There will be a lot of subheadings that follow a similar typography to that of
the heading, with no vast contrast in fonts or styles across the same cover.
- The subheadings and other text will also follow a column format that is set through
the alignment of the heading and the main image in the top right of the frame.
- It will follow a colour scheme that is consistent with the house style and branding.
Front cover 1 – First draft
This is the first draft that I produced when designing
the front cover of the first issue of my gaming
magazine. The features that it includes are as
follows:
- The title is in the centre middle of the frame with
the model's head over the top of the middle of it. The
typography is an attempt to establish a style that
coincides with the idea of the magazine.
- The model is shot in a mid-long shot that
encompasses most of the body. The model is also
maintaining direct mode of address with the
audience.
- The text down the sides follows a formatting of
wrapping around the model's body shape. The
typography is a sans-serif font as this type of font is
modernistic and fits with the topic that my magazine
is trying to follow.
- There is a barcode in the bottom right as this is the
most out of the way place for the barcode to be, yet it
also shows the publishing companies logo which
allows it to fit the brief.
Front cover 1 – Changes made
To follow on from the first draft before any original
images are added, I made several improvements on
my earlier design. These design improvements
include:
- The title has had the biggest change as the previous
version looked very out of place and unprofessional as
it was the only text that followed the style of
typography on the front cover and it was also of a
different colour that didn’t follow the theme of the
cover.
- The 'Sticker' aesthetic on the right-hand side that
displays the page number was added as it was a
simple addition that aided in the collumning of the
magazine and fit in with conventions of similar
magazines that include it.
- There were also some informational additions that
allowed my magazine to fit the brief which includes
having the link to my website as an anchoring piece
of text underneath the title.
- There were also some aesthetic improvements such
as having a box over the 'Look' on the left-hand side.
Front cover 1 – Final draft
There were more improvements to further enhance
the second draft and have it finally prepared before
placing my original image in the frame in place of
Keanu. These changes include:
- There have been several aesthetic and efficiency
additions to the frame which have drastically helped
with the columning and the general aesthetic of the
frame. These are the lines that strafe down the right
and left sides of the frame to align the text and act
as a guide to properly column the text. This was
accompanied with the black box that contains the
sub-heading, 'INSIDE'.
- The next thing to be improved or changed upon will
be the formatting and framing of certain pieces
when the original image is added as there will be a
different body shape and framing to that of Keanu.
This means that the text that is aligned so that it
curves just around the outside of his body will have
to be changed.
Front cover 1 – Final piece
This is my final front cover of the first issue with the
original image that I took being put in the final draft
that I had prepared. The framing has slightly changed
and alongside the different body shape and clothing
this means that some changes have had to be made.
These include:
- The first change to be noted would be the shifting of
the text in the frame. Whilst the text and content
hasn’t been changed, the placement of the text in
general has had to be shifted upwards to curve better
around the model's body shape.
- The model has also been framed in a mid-shot as
oppose to a mid/long shot which Keanu was. This was
to put more emphasis on the face of the model and the
direct mode of address that is being used.
- The next and final change to be address would be the
content and typography change at the bottom right of
the frame as the previous text was both about Keanu
and not my model, and also the typography was not
consistent with the rest of the piece.
Front cover 2 – First draft
The first draft of the second issue of my magazine was
made following the first draft of my first issue's front
cover, before any improvements have been made. The
features of the first draft in this magazine include:
- The title of this draft is the same as the title in the
first issue's first draft and the framing is the same as
well. The reason for this was to initially begin to
develop a house style and consistency across the two
issue so that readers can easily discern that the two
magazines were related.
- The formatting of the headings, subheadings,
typography and the text are all the same as the
previous first draft from the first issue. This was again
to attempt to establish a house style across the two
issues.
- The main change that this draft has compared to the
first issue is the bottom right of the frame as the
typography is more similar to the rest of the magazine.
The colour scheme is also similar with the block
colour/black and white theme but the block colour
changed from the orange to a red colour.
Front cover 2 – Changes made
These changes were made in tandem with the second
draft of the first issues front cover, which is telling with
the calibre and type of changes that were made. These
changes include:
- The title has had the biggest change as the
previous version looked very out of place and
unprofessional as it was the only text that followed the
style of typography on the front cover and it was also of
a different colour that didn’t follow the theme of
the cover.
- The 'Sticker' aesthetic on the right-hand side
that displays the page number was added as it was
a simple addition that aided in the columning of
the magazine and fit in with conventions of
similar magazines that include it.
- There were also some informational additions
that allowed my magazine to fit the brief which
includes having the link to my website as an anchoring
piece of text underneath the title.
Front cover 2 – Final draft
The final draft of this issue was also made in tandem
with the final draft of the first issues front cover, this
is evident due to the type of changes that occurred.
These changes include:
- There have been several aesthetic and
efficiency additions to the frame which have
drastically helped with the columning and the general
aesthetic of the frame. These are the lines that strafe
down the right and left sides of the frame to align the
text and act as a guide to properly column the text.
This was accompanied with the black box that
contains the sub-heading, 'INSIDE'.
- The next thing to be improved or changed upon
will be the formatting and framing of certain
pieces when the original image is added as there will
be a different body shape and framing to that of
Jade. This means that the text that is aligned so that
it curves just around the outside of his body will
have to be changed.
Front cover 2 – Final Piece
This is my final front cover of the second issue with
the original image that I took being put in the final
draft that I had prepared. The framing has slightly
changed and alongside the different body shape and
clothing this means that some changes have had to be
made.
These include:
- The first change to be noted would be the shifting of the
text in the frame. Whilst the text and content hasn’t been
changed, the placement of the text in general has had to
be shifted upwards to curve better around the model's
body shape.
- The model has also been framed in a mid-shot as oppose
to a medium close up shot which Jade Raymond was. This
was to put more emphasis on the clothing of model to
further establish their identity as an esports professional.
- The next and final change would be the content and
typography change at the bottom left of the frame as the
previous text was both about Jade and not my model.
- Both the front covers have a simillar colour background
aswell to further establish a house style across the
magazines.
Contents page 1 – First draft
This contents page was developed during the same
period as the final draft of the two front covers, meaning
that the house style that I have been going for has
already been established and it was my task to establish
continuity and refrain from straying from that house
style:
- The First feature that was planned was that the title
would not be the GLITCH logo but instead it would be
CONTENTS as the page is directly after the front cover
and thus the name of the magazine has already been
established and the identity maintained through a
house style.
- The house style is brought forward through
maintaining the same colour scheme that was
established in the first front cover.
- The typography of using a sans-serif front has also
been maintained to help keep with the modernistic feel
of the magazine.
- The contents page that we have opted for is one that
has a columning of the subheadings and text on the left
and the images on the right in a collage style fashion.
Contents page 1 – Final draft
The Final draft of the two contents pages was done
after looking back through the final pieces of the two
magazines and looking at what features could be added
for the sake of aesthetic and professionalism. These
features include:
- The heading have all been underlined and aligned
better with the main title to establish a better sense of
columning and formatting to make it seem more
professional and contribute to the overall aesthetic.
- The sticker in the bottom of the frame has had some
more layers added to make it seem more akin to the
stickers used on the front covers and the wording inside
has had some underlining to make it seem more
professional.
- In all the images there has been some minor
adjustments such as adding a little triangle in the top
rights of the images to help the numbers stand out
more and also to help establish consistency across the
magazine by adding more colour that can link it back to
the first front cover.
Contents page 1 – Final Piece
This is the final version of the first issues contents
page. The original photos were put in the frames
were the draft photos were and the formatting was
not changed too much. What was changed or
tweaked includes:
- The images that were added mostly have a
monotone colour as the background as this allows
for the house colour scheme of shades and the
block colour to have consistency in the contents
page aswell as the front cover.
- The image of the model in the contents page is
shot as a mid-body shot as this allows to
encompass the clothing aswell as the model's face.
The reason for this is that we want readers to
recognise that the model is the same model from
the front cover but also to note the attire change
and expression change with the different content
that the two images are referring to.
Contents page 2 – First draft
This contents page was developed during the same period
as the final draft of the two front covers, meaning that the
house style that I have been going for has already been
established and it was my task to establish continuity and
refrain from straying from that house style:
- The First feature that was planned was that the

be CONTENTS as the page is directly after the front
cover and thus the name of the magazine has already
been established and the identity maintained through
a house style.
- The house style is brought forward through maintaining
the same colour scheme that was established in the
second front cover.
- The typography of using a sans-serif front has also been
maintained to help keep with the modernistic feel of the
magazine.
- This contents page has deviated slightly from the one
prior inn that the formatting has placed the collage style
images in the top of the frame and the columned text
beneath them.
Contents page 2 – Final Piece
This is the final version of the first issues
contents page. The original photos were put in
the frames were the draft photos were and the
formatting was not changed too much. What was
changed or tweaked includes:
- The images that were added mostly have
a monotone colour as the background as this
allows for the house colour scheme of shades and
the block colour to have consistency in the

to recognise that the model is the same model
from the front cover but also to note the attire
change and expression change with the different
content that the two images are referring to.
Contents page 2 – Final draft
The Final draft of the two contents pages was done after
looking back through the final pieces of the
two magazines and looking at what features could be
added for the sake of aesthetic and professionalism.
These features include:
- The heading have all been underlined and

Magazine planning

  • 1. Coursework Product Planning Brief 3 – Magazines and online Gaming magazine
  • 2. What I plan to use on my front covers For my front covers I have decided to incorporate my knowledge of the codes and conventions of typical gaming/entertainment magazines alongside my own original ideas. The things I plan to do include: - Like most magazines, the title will be central and at the top of the frame, either behind or covering the top of the model's head. The title will also be in all caps and the typography, as with the rest of the text on the front cover, will be sans-serif. - The models will be framed with a mid-body shot with the face being the focus of the frame. - Lots of subheadings that follow a similar typography to that of the main title. - The subheadings and other text will also follow a column format that is set through the alignment of the heading and its placement in the frame. - There will be a consistent two tonal colour scheme in each magazine cover with the change being in the block colour. The house style will be maintained through consistent formatting and typography over both covers. - There will be a direct mode of address established with most of the models looking directly at the reader.
  • 3. What I plan to use on my content's pages For my content's pages, I again have decided to incorporate my knowledge of the codes and conventions of typical gaming/entertainment magazine content's pages, alongside my own original ideas. The things I plan to do include: - Like most content's pages the title will be in the top left of the page. This is due to the fact that the reader should know what magazine they are reading already due to having to have bypassed the front page. - My magazine will have a tendency towards the esports scene and the aspect of people, therefore the images in my content's pages will be of people in the gaming scene with a variety of shot types. - There will be a lot of subheadings that follow a similar typography to that of the heading, with no vast contrast in fonts or styles across the same cover. - The subheadings and other text will also follow a column format that is set through the alignment of the heading and the main image in the top right of the frame. - It will follow a colour scheme that is consistent with the house style and branding.
  • 4. Front cover 1 – First draft This is the first draft that I produced when designing the front cover of the first issue of my gaming magazine. The features that it includes are as follows: - The title is in the centre middle of the frame with the model's head over the top of the middle of it. The typography is an attempt to establish a style that coincides with the idea of the magazine. - The model is shot in a mid-long shot that encompasses most of the body. The model is also maintaining direct mode of address with the audience. - The text down the sides follows a formatting of wrapping around the model's body shape. The typography is a sans-serif font as this type of font is modernistic and fits with the topic that my magazine is trying to follow. - There is a barcode in the bottom right as this is the most out of the way place for the barcode to be, yet it also shows the publishing companies logo which allows it to fit the brief.
  • 5. Front cover 1 – Changes made To follow on from the first draft before any original images are added, I made several improvements on my earlier design. These design improvements include: - The title has had the biggest change as the previous version looked very out of place and unprofessional as it was the only text that followed the style of typography on the front cover and it was also of a different colour that didn’t follow the theme of the cover. - The 'Sticker' aesthetic on the right-hand side that displays the page number was added as it was a simple addition that aided in the collumning of the magazine and fit in with conventions of similar magazines that include it. - There were also some informational additions that allowed my magazine to fit the brief which includes having the link to my website as an anchoring piece of text underneath the title. - There were also some aesthetic improvements such as having a box over the 'Look' on the left-hand side.
  • 6. Front cover 1 – Final draft There were more improvements to further enhance the second draft and have it finally prepared before placing my original image in the frame in place of Keanu. These changes include: - There have been several aesthetic and efficiency additions to the frame which have drastically helped with the columning and the general aesthetic of the frame. These are the lines that strafe down the right and left sides of the frame to align the text and act as a guide to properly column the text. This was accompanied with the black box that contains the sub-heading, 'INSIDE'. - The next thing to be improved or changed upon will be the formatting and framing of certain pieces when the original image is added as there will be a different body shape and framing to that of Keanu. This means that the text that is aligned so that it curves just around the outside of his body will have to be changed.
  • 7. Front cover 1 – Final piece This is my final front cover of the first issue with the original image that I took being put in the final draft that I had prepared. The framing has slightly changed and alongside the different body shape and clothing this means that some changes have had to be made. These include: - The first change to be noted would be the shifting of the text in the frame. Whilst the text and content hasn’t been changed, the placement of the text in general has had to be shifted upwards to curve better around the model's body shape. - The model has also been framed in a mid-shot as oppose to a mid/long shot which Keanu was. This was to put more emphasis on the face of the model and the direct mode of address that is being used. - The next and final change to be address would be the content and typography change at the bottom right of the frame as the previous text was both about Keanu and not my model, and also the typography was not consistent with the rest of the piece.
  • 8. Front cover 2 – First draft The first draft of the second issue of my magazine was made following the first draft of my first issue's front cover, before any improvements have been made. The features of the first draft in this magazine include: - The title of this draft is the same as the title in the first issue's first draft and the framing is the same as well. The reason for this was to initially begin to develop a house style and consistency across the two issue so that readers can easily discern that the two magazines were related. - The formatting of the headings, subheadings, typography and the text are all the same as the previous first draft from the first issue. This was again to attempt to establish a house style across the two issues. - The main change that this draft has compared to the first issue is the bottom right of the frame as the typography is more similar to the rest of the magazine. The colour scheme is also similar with the block colour/black and white theme but the block colour changed from the orange to a red colour.
  • 9. Front cover 2 – Changes made These changes were made in tandem with the second draft of the first issues front cover, which is telling with the calibre and type of changes that were made. These changes include: - The title has had the biggest change as the previous version looked very out of place and unprofessional as it was the only text that followed the style of typography on the front cover and it was also of a different colour that didn’t follow the theme of the cover. - The 'Sticker' aesthetic on the right-hand side that displays the page number was added as it was a simple addition that aided in the columning of the magazine and fit in with conventions of similar magazines that include it. - There were also some informational additions that allowed my magazine to fit the brief which includes having the link to my website as an anchoring piece of text underneath the title.
  • 10. Front cover 2 – Final draft The final draft of this issue was also made in tandem with the final draft of the first issues front cover, this is evident due to the type of changes that occurred. - The next thing to be improved or changed upon will be the formatting and framing of certain pieces when the original image is added as there will be a different body shape and framing to that of Jade. This means that the text that is aligned so that it curves just around the outside of his body will have to be changed.
  • 11. Front cover 2 – Final Piece This is my final front cover of the second issue with the original image that I took being put in the final draft that I had prepared. - The model has also been framed in a mid-shot as oppose to a medium close up shot which Jade Raymond was. This was to put more emphasis on the clothing of model to further establish their identity as an esports professional. - The next and final change would be the content and typography change at the bottom left of the frame as the previous text was both about Jade and not my model. - Both the front covers have a simillar colour background aswell to further establish a house style across the magazines.
  • 12. Contents page 1 – First draft This contents page was developed during the same period as the final draft of the two front covers, meaning that the house style that I have been going for has already been established and it was my task to establish continuity and refrain from straying from that house style: - The First feature that was planned was that the title would not be the GLITCH logo but instead it would be CONTENTS as the page is directly after the front cover and thus the name of the magazine has already been established and the identity maintained through a house style. - The house style is brought forward through maintaining the same colour scheme that was established in the first front cover. - The typography of using a sans-serif front has also been maintained to help keep with the modernistic feel of the magazine. - The contents page that we have opted for is one that has a columning of the subheadings and text on the left and the images on the right in a collage style fashion.
  • 13. Contents page 1 – Final draft The Final draft of the two contents pages was done after looking back through the final pieces of the two magazines and looking at what features could be added for the sake of aesthetic and professionalism. These features include: - The heading have all been underlined and aligned better with the main title to establish a better sense of columning and formatting to make it seem more professional and contribute to the overall aesthetic. - The sticker in the bottom of the frame has had some more layers added to make it seem more akin to the stickers used on the front covers and the wording inside has had some underlining to make it seem more professional. - In all the images there has been some minor adjustments such as adding a little triangle in the top rights of the images to help the numbers stand out more and also to help establish consistency across the magazine by adding more colour that can link it back to the first front cover.
  • 14. Contents page 1 – Final Piece This is the final version of the first issues contents page. The original photos were put in the frames were the draft photos were and the formatting was not changed too much. What was changed or tweaked includes: - The images that were added mostly have a monotone colour as the background as this allows for the house colour scheme of shades and the block colour to have consistency in the contents page aswell as the front cover. - The image of the model in the contents page is shot as a mid-body shot as this allows to encompass the clothing aswell as the model's face. The reason for this is that we want readers to recognise that the model is the same model from the front cover but also to note the attire change and expression change with the different content that the two images are referring to.
