2. Why a Gaming Magazine?
I have chosen to do a gaming magazine as there is a surplus of this
type of entertainment magazine that I can draw reference from,
without using too many of the clichéd conventions. With the rise of
video gaming in the media industry, there is a wide range
of possibilities for my magazine, especially with e-sports becoming
so prevalent. The e-sports aspect of gaming provides for the possibility
of real-life models in gaming magazines. Gaming is now drawing upon
the film industry with aspects being included in games themselves.
There are also some Hollywood remakes of games providing a basis to
use movie stars as models in gaming magazines. For example, the
opportunity to use Angelina Jolie as a model due to her performance
as Lara Croft in the remake of Tomb Raider.

3. Conventions of Gaming
Magazines – Front covers
- Similar to most magazines the title is central at the top of the frame either behind or
covering the top of the model's head.
- The models tend to be framed as a mid-body shot with the face being the focus of the
frame. This is due to the selling point of most magazines being the model as they are
famous in their respective industry.
- There are a lot of subheadings and that follow a similar typography to that of the
heading with no vast contrast in fonts or styles across the same cover.
- The subheadings and other text also follow a column format that is set through the
alignment of the heading and its placement in the frame as no text will extend further
than the reach of the heading.
- Every magazine also follows a colour scheme that is consistent with its house style
and branding.
- There is a direct mode of address with most of the models that are famous in some
regard as it utilizes their fame as a mode of advertisement. However those that do not
show direct mode of address center more on the attire and the product they are
representing.
- Almost all of the magazines contain a puff of some sort that is used to advertise the
contents of the magazine.

- Similar to most contents pages the title is the top left of the page with some cases having the title
more central. This is due to the fact that the reader should know what magazine they are reading
already due to having to have bypassed the front page, this allows for more attention to be placed
on the headings of categories and the images.
- The images used in gaming contents pages cover a variety of styles, from long shots and
landscapes to close ups and mid-shots, this is a result of the variety of content that a gaming
magazine can encompass. My magazine will have a tendency towards the esports scene and the
aspect of people, therefore the images in my content's pages will be of people in the gaming scene
with a variety of shot types.
