Climate change has been an increasing concern in today s world and has proven to
be detrimental in the coming years. With the increasing human population, the
consumption of fossil fuels has been in high demand and this poses a threat in the
future. After several years of political and cultural pressure to take a stand on climate
change and in order to control the regulation of carbon dioxideemissions into the
atmosphere, British Columbia implemented the carbon taxon July 1, 2008 (Murray
and Rivers, page 3). This tax was the first to be imposed in North America and was
revenue neutral (Murray and Rivers, page 3). Due to its myriad of benefits, the
carbon tax was favored by many and did has not disappointed; not only have
greenhouse gasemissions dropped, but business have grown tremendously, and other
energy sectors are flourishing. While counter arguments may highlight the negative
effects of the taxation policy, rebuttals often overlook the long term advantages. In
this paper, I will prove that the carbon tax policy in British Columbia has had several
beneficial outcomes such as the reduction of greenhouse gases and economic growth.
I will then raise an opposition to my thesis by arguing that the short term economic
effects will be damaging to the lower income classes. However, I will show that this
objection is not as valid because the long term benefits, both economically and
environmentally will ultimately prove integral in the alleviating future climate change.

N terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT proBNP) is an inactive
byproduct of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP). They are released from myocytes
after the prohormone BNP (ProBNP) is cleaved into the NT proBNP and the BNP.
The synthesis of ProBNP and the release of NT proBNP and BNP are caused by

Pathological and echocardiographic examination of the LVH affected rhesus
macaques revealed the similar characteristics shared between HCM in humans and
LVH in rhesus macaques. Plasma Troponin I concentration was measured in some of
the LVH affected and normal rhesus macaques, and the study failed to show the
association between an elevation of Troponin I concentration and the presence of
LVH. However, no study has been performed to compare the plasma concentration of
NT proBNP in the rhesus macaques with LVH and controls. The purpose of the
present study is to compare the concentrations of NT proBNP in rhesus macaques
with LVH and controls using commercially available ELISA kit. Associatin between
the NT proBNP concentration and various features of LVH including left ventricular
wall thickness will be also be evaluated. We hypothesized that rhesus macaques with
LVH show higher concentrations of NT proBNP attributed to the hypertrophied
ventricular walls with diastolic dysfunction, and the severity of left ventricular wall
thickness is associated with the plasma NT proBNP concentration.
Material and Methods
Subject and Housing
All study procedures were conducted at the California National Primate Research

All too often, homeowners and gardeners wage war in their lawns and gardens
against the plants that grow incredibly well there, but that aren t intentionally planted,
and many times, the justification for these battles all comes down to the words we
use to describe them.
When we buy and plant packets of common flower, vegetable, or herb seeds, we
spend a lot of time, energy, and water in our efforts to get those seeds to germinate
and grow, and take pride in our green thumb and homegrown food supply.
But when a plant that we identify as being a weed is found growing in our lawn or
garden, out comes the trowel and hoe (or for the ruthless and impatient gardeners,
weedkillers such as RoundUp), and we may spend the entire growing season
keeping these opportunistic and resilient plants at bay, in order to have neat and tidy
garden beds and uniform lawns. And it s too bad, really, as many of the common
garden weeds are not only edible and nutritious, but can be a great homegrown (and
