Adoption of Leed as a Green Building Rating System in Nigeria
ARC 879: PROJECT FEASIBILITY STUDIES 2012 Adoption of LEEDВ® as a Green Building
Rating System in Nigeria Going Green In Nigeria OMOEFE AGHIMIEN 119051038 ABSTRACT
Green building rating systems are in a state of constant flux and often differ from region to region.
Regardless, fundamental principles persist from which the rating system is derived. These include
sustainable sites and structure design efficiency, water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials
efficiency, indoor environmental quality, operations and maintenance optimization, innovation and
design process, waste and toxic reduction etc. The essence of green building is an optimization of
one or more of these principles. The green building rating system, LEEDВ®... Show more content

* Reduced air and water pollution (with direct health benefits) * Reduced water consumption *
Limited waste generation due to recycling and reuse * Reduced pollution loads * Increased user
productivity * Enhanced image and marketability. The concept of sustainable development can be
traced to the energy (especially fossil oil) crisis and the environment pollution concern in the 1970s.
The green building movement originated from the need and desire for more energy efficient and
environmentally friendly construction practices. There are a number of motives to building green,
including environmental, economic, and social benefits. However, modern sustainability initiatives
call for an integrated and synergistic design to both new construction and in the retrofitting of an
existing structure. Also known as sustainable design, this approach integrates the building life cycle
with each green practice employed with a design purpose to create a synergy amongst the practices
used. Green building brings together a vast array of practices and techniques to reduce and
ultimately eliminate the impacts of buildings on the environment and human health. It often
emphasizes taking advantage of renewable resources, e.g., using sunlight through passive solar,
active solar, and photovoltaic techniques and using plants and trees through green roofs, rain
gardens, and for reduction of rainwater run off. Many

Pair Of Tickets
A Pair of Tickets is a short story in the book, The Joy Luck Club, which is compiled of several
short stories told by 4 daughters and their mothers and this short story is the final chapter of the
book and reflects a lot of the themes presented in the earlier part of this book. This book deals with
all different types of motherdaughter relationships between Chinese mothers with American
daughters. This short story is told by Jing Mei, or June, and her journey to meet her long lost
sisters. Her mother has passed away and Jing Mei is fulfilling her mother s wishes. Her and her
father travel to China, and visit familyand Jing Mei slowly discovers more about the culture she
has been raised in and things begin to make sense for Jing Mei. In the Joy Luck Club, Jing Mei and
her mother do not have the best relationship and we get a brief glimpse of this in the short story.
This short story is not only about Jing Mei s journey to China but also a journey to find her true
identity and what it truly means to be Chinese and not just Look Chinese. At the beginning of the
story we... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
June never wanted to embrace the Chinese culture that her mom wanted her to which created some
tension between the two. Earlier in the book, The Joy Luck Club, we learned that June is born in
San Francisco (Wood). Having an American born daughter with two full Chinese parents creates a
barrier between the three of them. June s mother cherishes the traditions and culture of China but
June wants to live and independent American life style (Wood). June s mother grew up in China
and lived through the Japanese invasion and wanted to hold onto whatever traditions and ideals she
could. June didn t care. June s independence was viewed as a defiant act to support her
individualism in the American culture (Shear). June knew this about herself but didn t realize what
it meant for her relationship with her

Ivan Ilych Reflection
INTRO: As a senior in High School is getting close to graduating, there are many things they
think about. They start to spend more time with friends and family, striving to make as many
memories as they can. They also look back on all the academic challenges they overcame. One of
which would be reading all the novels assigned, or reading a summary of the book. A book which
could stand out to them would be The Deathof Ivan Ilych written by Leo Tolstoy. This is a novelon
how a man s life, and how he died. Ivan Ilych, from a very young age, was always worried about
his social standpoint. He gained knowledge in the works of government and became a lawyer. His
work causes him to move twice before finding a wife, by the name of PraskГіvya FГ«dorovna.
When she becomes pregnant, she is a little more difficult to handle, so Ivan devotes himself to his...

Not only does a senior worry about the future, but they also look back on their life and reflect on
what they have done. They then proceed to create more memories and feelings to take with
them. Ivan Ilych did the same thing, however, he didn t have more time to create more
memories. Right before he died, he tried to fix his relationship between him and his family by
telling them he loves them. This can also be seen as a warning, warning seniors to make
memories while they can and to act in a way they will not regret. In the novel, it states, Ivan
Ilych s life had been most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible, (Ch. 2). This is a
warning saying to do activities that will give you fun memories to bring p in times of trial. It can
also relate to many seniors because as they reflect on their lives, all they see is things they haven t

Symbolic Role Played by Cosmic Imagery in Romeo and Juliet Cosmic imagery and allusions to
stars have been used for centuries to describe divine and supernatural events on earth. In the play
Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, cosmic references are used to amplify the deep
emotions of love Romeo and Juliet feel for each other. Vivid cosmic imagery intensifies emotions
of love and hate, bringing the play to life. Cosmic references include the idea of fate written in the
stars, Romeo and Juliet s blossoming love revolving around stars and the ironic role played by
celestial objects, leading ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their abandonment of stars leads to their early demise as they attempted to control their own
lives. Stars are known for their beauty and dazzling effect which is related to fate as well. This
idea of fate enhances their love for each other and the cosmic imagery adds a beautiful touch.
Later, Romeo foreshadows his untimely demise in Act 1 when he claims Some consequence yet
hanging in the stars/ shall begin his fearful date. (1.4.107 108). Romeo knows that it is fate who
directs his sail, but his trust in the stars quickly diminishes throughout the play, although his
frequent references to cosmic objects remain. They both believe in fate, but as trouble arises from
their relationship, they lose hope and deny the stars as guides. Cosmic imagery is used by Romeo
and Juliet to describe each other, adding a sense of unique intimacy to their love. But the stars
never fated for them to be together for eternity, ruining their majestic love story. Throughout Romeo
and Juliet s flourishing relationship, celestial imagery is used when talking about each other and
bringing out the pure love they have for one another. Through a combination of metaphors,
personification, poetry, similes, and allusions, their emotions for each other are shown with
celestial imagery being the center theme of their love. Romeo speaks delicately about Juliet s eyes
when he acclaims Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven, (2.2.15) Romeo refers

Disadvantages Of Engineering Materials
Introduction Engineering materials is classified into families based on their material structure,
compositions, properties etc, as shown in the figure: Metals Ferrous metals: These are the
metals and the alloys that are composed of high amounts of the iron content. These are the
strongest materials that are available and can be used in the applications where strength of the
material is compulsorily high and at a low cost and also where the weight is not a primary
importance. Ferrous metals are used in various applications such as: building of bridges,
structures of huge buildings, rolling stock, the bodies and highly stressed engine parts of vehicles
running on the road, railway lines and locomotives. The ferrous metals alone can also be divided
into Groups , and these are as follows. Non ferrous metals: These materials refer to the remaining
metals known in the world. As they lack of mechanical strength these clean metals can hardly be
used as structural materials. They are used where their superior properties such as electrical
conductivity, thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance are essential. Aluminum and Copper
are used as electrical conductors and, composed with sheet zinc and sheet lead, are used as roofing
materials. They are primarily used with other metals to improve the material strength. Some
extensively used non ferrous metals and alloys that are available are shown in figure. Non metallic
materials Non metallic or synthetic

Quantitative And Qualitative Research Design
Researchers employ a number of research methodologies to carry out, test, analyze and describe
phenomena they are interested in studying. Among the most widely used methodologies are
quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method (Cozby Bates, 2012, Garza Landrum, 2015; Leedy
Ormrod, 2013; Creswell, 2013; Gergen, 2015). Qualitative and quantitative research designs, for
example, are types of research approaches that provide clear directions on how to carry out a
research plan (Creswell, 2013). The quantitative research design is profoundly deep rooted in the
discipline of psychology where it has been used through the perspective of post positivist thoughts
(Creswell, 2013). On the other hand, the qualitative researchdesign is deeply rooted in the field of
Anthropology, where researchers have developed several naturalistic observational techniques to
explain lived phenomena (Bates Cosby, 2012; Creswell, 2013; Garza Landrum, 2015).
Quantitative and qualitative research designs share several similarities as well as differences in
how they can be employed in conducting research procedures (Yilmaz, 2013).
Approaches To Research: Qualitative The qualitative design is an inductive, interpretive and
naturalistic approach use in studying people, cases, phenomena, social situations and processes in
their natural settings to describe in descriptive terms the meanings that people attach to their lived
experiences (Yilmaz, 2013; Cozby Bates, 2012). According to Yilmaz (2013)

Tax On Gross Transportation Income Essay
Today, Section 883, Exclusions from Gross Income, is still the life rath that cruise companies cling
to save and protect their income from standard U.S. taxation. Since its inception,
(a)(1) Ships Operated by certain foreign corporations.
Gross income derived by a corporation organized in a foreign country from the international
operation of a ship or ships if such foreign country grants an equivalent exemption to corporations
organized in the United States.
Since, Section 883 ultimately provides a safe harbor for cruise companies, Section 887 at least
captures some taxes with the Imposition of tax on gross Transportation income of Nonresident
Aliens and Foreign Corporations. This section of the Code provides, When there is a nonresident
individual or foreign corporation that has United States source gross transportation income for such
taxable year, there shall be a 4% tax.
883(a)(5) provides for a special rule that does not take into account any failure of a foreign country
to grant an exemption to a corporation organized in the United States if the corporation is subject
to tax by the foreign country on a residence basis pursuant to provisions with the foreign law.
Simply put, if a foreign country neglected to tax a United States corporation who qualifies to be a
resident of the country, it is not factored into the tax treatment from the United States.
Today, cruise companies incorporated abroad have benefited tremendously from the United States
treatment of

Mendacity In A Cat On A Hot Tin Roof
Mendacity is the trend to lie. In the case of A Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams, the
Pollitt family is living in deception. Living in mendacity can cause competition in between family.
The Pollitt are an un united family. They don t have communication, the family lacks honesty.
Mendacity plays a big role in Brick s life; on the play he blames falsehood for the cause of him
becoming an alcoholic and marrying Maggie under certain circumstances.
Big Daddy the wealthiest man in town needs to play the good man, lying that he stills loves Big

In the Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams, mendacity plays a large role in the Pollitt

Achilles, Aeneas, and Roland
Imagine living in a turbulent world, where people lived their day to day lives praying that they
would see the next sunrise. That was life for villagers that lived during the times of the ancient
Greeks and Romans, as well as during the medieval period when Germanic tribes ruled Europe. To
help them get through their very insecure days, people would tell oral stories of great heroes, like
those of Achilles, Aeneas, and Roland. Achilles was a Greek war hero who fights in the Trojan War
,
a ten year long war between Greece and Troy(present day Turkey). Aeneas was an epic hero in
ancient Roman folklore. He was a soldier who fought in the Trojan War and after surviving the
destruction of Troy, he later founded the city of Rome. Roland was an... Show more content on

He was described as a model medieval hero, because he was a natural Christian leader who was

Frenchman, who died at the hand of power and land hungry, Islamic forces. At the end of the
story, it is said that he died while he was chasing away the pagans. To this day, in the 21st
century, homo sapiens still write stories about heroes that will save them and society. The
number one characteristic that describes a hero is one that has a Stoic sense of duty that can
overcome the desire for personal fulfillment. Achilles, Aeneas, and Roland were all created to
create personal comfort for their people that lived in such a hectic and dangerous world. These
three protagonists who were viewed by their cultures as gods also showed their people that they
did portray human characterists (two out of the three even die) and that anyone can be like them if
they tried. In a way they were used to inspire their respective residents to be better civilians in their
community. If everyone could follow that, than living in a turbulent world would go from reality to

Cormac Mccarthy The Road Setting
The Road Summer Reading Assignment
The Road is a fiction novel written by Cormac McCarthy. The Road takes place in a post
apocalyptic world, with a man and a boy who are not named. The timetable for this book lasts for
a few months, and is sort of like documentation for the journey of these two individuals. The
setting is hard to follow, and really adds depth to the book as the location and time can kind of
be imagined by the reader. The man often follows his dreams, which play a key role in the plot of
this book. The man and the boy are all that they have in this cruel, post apocalyptic world, and that
is what the journey is all about. The plot of The Road is about this man and this boy who are

The two form a huge and very unique bond as they make their way from one coast to another.
The man believes he has been sent by God to protect the boy, and thus does everything humanly
possible to look after the boy. The boy aspires to be a good person during their journey from
coast to coast, often worrying about the people and things that he sees along the way. The boy
is very emotionally attached to the small things in life, making him very fragile minded during
this cruel world. Ultimately throughout the entire novel, the man is suffering from a cough that
grows stronger as he grows weaker. By the end of the book, the man and the boy have been
through hell together. Sadly, the man dies and this leaves the boy feeling alone in this cold and
empty world. At the last moment before the book comes to an end, the boy is swept up by a
new group. This group hopes to inhabit a New World, and God is their motivation. The book
ends in suspense, with many questions unanswered. Overall, this is a very good. I enjoyed
reading this book, and I actually kind of aspire to read it once more. This book is an eye opener for
the potential of post apocalyptic books, and makes me want to read more. Not only is this book
very suspenseful, and overall fun to read, but it also teaches the reader lessons that can be used
within real life. I was very happy with the plot of this book, and all of its

Symbolism In Boxes By Raymond Carver
What is the importance of a title? Every author carefully chooses a name for their story as a means
of interesting the reader and stating a theme or symbol that is used throughout the story. Especially
true in the case of Boxes by Raymond Carver, which tells the story of a son and his relationship
with his mother and girlfriend. The story is told from the son s point of view; however, the mother
and her inability to find contentment becomes the main focus. Unfortunately, the mother believes
that the happiness, which she lacks, can be found in possessions and surroundings. Although
physical boxes represent the mother constantly moving, the psychological boxes, which she

The September Crisis Of Canada
The October Crisis was a series of events trigged by the kidnapping of two government officials
during October of 1970 in the province of Quebec. The kidnappings of British Trade
Commissioner James Cross and Quebec Minister of Labour Pierre Laporte were the pinnacle of all
terrorist activity led by the Front de LibГ©ration du Quebec(FLQ). The FLQ was a radical
separatist group who strived for Quebec s independence from the rest of Canada. The
circumstances ultimately culminated in the only peacetime use of the War Measures Act in
Canadian history, invoked by Governor General of Canada Roland Michener at the direction of
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. The use of the War Measures Act had been requested by the Premier

The invocation of the War Measures Act was also widely supported throughout Quebec and
Canada, with eighty six percent of Quebec s population and eighty eight percent of Canadians
agreeing with the use of the War Measures Act in a poll by the Gallup company. Furthermore, the
detainment of individuals and suspension of civil liberties under the War Measures Act is justified
because close to ninety percent of those arrested were released soon after, and members of authority
executed the arrests non violently with the well being of the individuals as their top priority.
Trudeau s imposition of the War Measures Act was crucial considering that the FLQ presented the
most serious threat of domestic terrorism in Canadian history. Although the events leading up to the
October Crisis were relatively slow paced, it was the increase in the severity of FLQ crimes that
led the SГ»retГ© du Quebec to call on Canada s federal government to implement the War

Exile, is defined as a state of being barred from one s native country. How could that even be
possible; Being kicked out of a place of inhabitance. Many say that you d have to do something
unthinkable to have a punishment as grim as exile. During the lawless time of monsters and
unruly Kings, the Anglo Saxon era of poems make that all very practical. The creators of each
poem discuss the personal endeavors of each exile and how they each come to their own
acceptance, or not. The seafarer , Wanderer , and the Wife s Lament use various literary devices to
express the emotional toil, sorrow, and each theme of their exile.
First of all, in The Seafarer the writer discusses the internal conflicts he is having among the
waves of the sea. Even though this self chosen exile causes this man pain and sorrow, peace is
not a common entity for him while on land. The time for journeys would come and my soul
/ called me eagerly out, sent me over/ the horizon, seeking foreigners homes. (lines 36 38). The
gallant mortal does not doubt that there is no fear among his heart, but his longing for the tides
is far too strong to be confined to the dry, lifeless land. His experiences only bring him back to
where he feels at home the most the sea. But there isn t a man on earth so proud,/.../he feels no
fear as the sails unfurl/.../only the ocean s heave; But longing wraps itself around him. (lines 39
47). The way he shows his fearful arrogance is an example again of his internal conflict.

In the movie Brave directed by Brenda Chapman and Mark Andrews from Pixar shared a similar
storyline as The Little Mermaid which was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker from
Disney, is that they both brought up the cultural and societal expectations on gender roles.
Similarly, in between the two movies Brave and The Little Mermaid, the director focussed on the
feminine aspects of how society perceives a women and expects females to fulfill their roles.
Furthermore, the overall message of both movies is that parents and children need to listen and try
to understand each other before the situation gets out of hand. Although, Princess Merida and
Princess Ariel grew up with a certain gender roleexpectations, however, they have prove society s
perception of how feminine should be perceived is wrong by showing how Ariel change for men or
how Merida declare war for independence.
In the movie Brave, Princess Merida (the daughter of the Scottish King Fergus) is very skilled in
archery; therefore, she want her talent to represent her individualism instead of as the Princess of

What Is The Tone Of My Last Duchess
Love, death, and infidelity were weaved through the readings this week. In My Last Duchess by
Robert Browning, the speaker is a Duke who is looking at a painting of his last (now deceased)
Duchess and remembering her. His memories are not fond; he was jealous and possessive, and
frankly, a bit of a dramaqueen. His suspicion is evident repeatedly, starting in line 13 where he
states, Sir, twas not/ Her husband s presence only, called that spot/ Of joy into the duchess cheek
. Lines 21 24 boldly say what he was alluding to earlier on, She had/ A heart how shall I say? too
soon made glad,/ Too easily impressed: she liked whate er/ She looked on, and her looks went
everywhere. She blushed easily and enjoyed looking at things, so in his mind she was a bit
promiscuous. He thought his wife unfaithful basically because she was polite. This, as well as his
uppity attitude, are both made clear in lines 31 34, She thanked men, good! but thanked
/ Somehow I know not how as if she ranked/ My gift of a nine hundred years old name/ With
anybody s gift. He thinks that his name alone is a better gift than anything else; he s conceited and
entitled.

How do professional design companies work through a design process? The video you are about
to see chronicles the efforts of a world renowned design firm, as they apply their process to the
redesign of a common, everyday product.
One of the best documented examples of the design process in action took place in Palo Alto,
California, at an industrial design firm called IDEO. ABC News gave IDEO the challenge of
redesigning the old and familiar shopping cart in just five days. Nightline chronicled the experience
and aired the program on February 9, 1999.

design process?
Extend Your Understanding (Optional)
Engineers need to know what problems they are addressing. They must have an idea about the
degree to which the solution should be carried out, along with what the solution should do to solve
the problem. The engineer must also work within constraints, such as time and budget. A design
brief is a tool that is used to concisely identify the problem, solution expectations, and project
constraints. The engineer will often return to the design brief throughout a design process to assess
the progress and validity of his or her creative work.
Imagine that you are part of that design team. The project leader has given you the responsibility of
creating a design brief that defines the problem, states the expectations that the solution must meet,
and identifies the project criteria and constraints. Your design brief will serve as a guide to the
team as they work through the design process.
From your observations of the video, record your information in the design brief on the following

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a gothic horror novella written by Robert Louis
Stevenson in the Victorian era. The novella follows a well respected doctor Henry Jekyll and his
struggle between good and evil when he takes a potion and becomes Mr Hyde.
Robert Louis Stevenson the author of the novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was
born in Edinburgh in 1850 and died at the young age of forty four. He wrote the book in 1886. As a
child he was very close to his nurse and when he was ill she used to read him
Bible stories as he was brought up in a strict Catholic tradition, which he later rebelled against.
This led to his fascination for his city s low life and for bizarre characters, which ... Show more

When describing the door, Stevenson includes detail about the surrounding and the atmosphere as
being dark weather, foggy and mysterious: a black winter morning . The door also represents
mystery, as we do not know the contents of the building: showed no window, nothing but a door .
The building is described as being a certain sinister block which suggests it looks evil. The
atmosphere is unwelcoming around the door as it has neither bell nor knocker which shows that
Mr Hyde did not want any visitors.
Most of the changes from Dr Jekyll into Mr Hyde take place in the laboratory. This is an odd
setting to use, as it is a symbol of what could be the origin of evil. Stevenson insinuates this by
the way he uses the butler (Poole) to say that it used to be a dissecting room this is where many
dead bodies will have been experimented on. Since the symbols of evil in this novella are Mr
Hyde and his use of medicine this could also be the case as the potion that went wrong, and created
and evil individual, was made here. When we later learn
the door leads to a courtyard, which allows Mr Hyde into the laboratory this begins to feel strange,
as we do not understand why Mr
Hyde is going into Dr Jekyll s grounds.
Our next setting is at the murder of Sir Danvers Carew where once again there was fog, which had

Wireless Sensor Network ( Wsn )
Wireless sensor network From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A wireless sensor network
(WSN) is a computer network consisting of spatially distributed autonomous devices using
sensors to cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions, such as temperature,
sound, vibration, pressure, motion or pollutants, at different locations.[1] The development of
wireless sensor networks was originally motivated by military applications such as battlefield
surveillance. However, wireless sensor networks are now used in many civilian application
areas, including environment and habitat monitoring, healthcare applications, home automation,
and traffic control.[1][2] In addition to one or more sensors, each node in a sensor network is
typically equipped with a radio transceiver or other wireless communications device, a small
microcontroller, and an energy source, usually a battery. The size a single sensor node can vary
from shoebox sized nodes down to devices the size of grain of dust.[1] The cost of sensor nodes
is similarly variable, ranging from hundreds of dollars to a few cents, depending on the size of the
sensor network and the complexity required of individual sensor nodes.[1] Size and cost constraints
on sensor nodes result in corresponding constraints on resources such as energy, memory,
computational speed and bandwidth.[1] In computer science, wireless sensor networks are an active
research area with numerous workshops and conferences arranged each year.

Macbeth Superstition Research Paper
The Scottish Play and the The Bard s Play are euphemisms for William Shakespeare s Macbeth.
The first is a reference to the play s Scottish setting, the second a reference to Shakespeare s popular
nickname. According to a theatrical superstition, called the Scottish curse, speaking the name
Macbethinside a theatre will cause disaster. A variation of the superstition also forbids quoting it
within a theatre except as part of an actual rehearsal or performance of the play.
Because of this superstition, the lead character is most often referred to as the Scottish King or

Zhaozhou Bridge is the oldest bridge; it is in china.
The first welded bridge was designed by polish engineer Stefan Bryla.
The longest suspension bridge in the world (from 2010) is the Akashi Kaikyo bridge in Kobe Japan.
Allan truss is based on the Howe truss. The first one was finished on 13 August 1894.
Bailey truss was made for the military, with many different styles. Baltimore truss was like the Pratt

The pegram truss has chords that are wider at the bottom but the same length at the top.
Pratt truss has members and angels that slope downward to the center. Many different types that are

Vierendeel truss has rectangular members instead of triangular.
Warren truss has members joined only by angled cross members. This forms equilateral truss. It is

How Did Napoleonic War Impact British Society

Napoleonic France impacted British society. He argues that Britain went to all out war with France
when it became apparent that Napoleon and Tsar Alexander of Russia formed an alliance at Tilsit
and that this force combined had the potential to overpower European nations such as Denmark,
Sweden, and Portugal and thus without intervention would become much more powerful than they

The British army also developed significantly from its state in 1793 mainly due to their successes
against Napoleon in Europe and their focus on deploying troops across the continent rather than
having thousands of soldiers for national defence as Boyd Hilton argues the diminished fear of
invasion made it possible to reduce the home guard, and so Castlereagh was able to transfer
27,000 militiamen to the regular Army as well as raising 12,000 normal recruits. The training of
British soldiers was much more crucial to their development, disciplines were tougher but fairer,
and promotions were introduced in all infantry and cavalry positions and lower class men could

changes that the Army moved from the margins of society to something approaching respectability.

The On The Processing Of Swallowing
The processing of swallowing, called deglutition, contains three main stages. The first stage is
voluntary, which is the oral stage in the mouth in which we control. The second stage is the
pharyngeal stage, and that is autonomic; controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Lastly, the
third stage is esophageal stage, which entails the food traveling from the pharynx downward to the
stomachthrough the esophagus. The esophageal stage is also autonomic.
Deglutition is a complicated process involving multiple structures of the oral cavity, pharynx, and
esophagus. The first stage is initiated when food enters the mouth. The process starts with chewing,
or mastication. The tongue can control movements of the food within the mouth during
mastication. Saliva also moistens the food as the food is being masticated. While the tongue, teeth,
and cheeks are working together, the process of mastication turns the food into bolus, which is a
solid collection of food. The tongue presses the bolus against the hard palate as swallowing occurs,
gathering a backwards movement. The bolus goes through the oral cavity down to the oropharynx.
After this voluntary stage, everything else becomes autonomic.
The sensory nerves located in the oropharynx, sends messages to the medulla oblongata via cranial
nerves (trigeminal and glossopharyngeal nerves). The medulla oblongata comprises the swallowing
center, known as the deglutition center. The bolus of food is processed from the oral cavity to the

No Arabic in and English Class
1.0 Introduction
According to the ministry of education in Kuwait it has always been a sin when teach ers use
Arabic in an English class, even if it is to clarify a certain aspect that students could not grasp.
Well, whether we like it or not, Learners of L2 tend to use L1 when learning the target language,
this argument has been proven by a number of re searchers (Atkinson, 1987; Auerbach, 1993;
Cook, 2001; Nation, 2003), and ignoring it or pretending that it is not happening might lead to
pedagogical implications.
Decision makers in ELT unit in the Ministry of Education, who adopt the notion that us ing Arabic
when teaching English is a taboo , have to hear the other voice that considers the use of L1 when
teaching L2 is very helpful and works to facilitate the learning process.
Hence, the current research comes to shed light on the importance of using L1 when teaching L2
and how we can utilise it and use it as a useful tool. Also this research will try to change the
common notion that using Arabic in English class is a deficiency.
1.1 Aims of the study
This study aims to provide a better understanding for the use of L1 when teaching L2, and how
this could be in the favour of facilitating the learning process for the students, and it should no
longer be a forbidden zone . The study also aims to high lights the improvements that could be
achieved by utilising Arabic in ELT class.

In determining you BATNA, a straightforward review of your interest will give you the clearest

If you accept your BATNA, you know when you can simply turn your back on the negotiations.
But it is important not to ignore the other party s BATNA. The relative strength of each party s
BATNA will determine the balance of power each can exercise. 4. Silence is golden.
This is true for two reasons: If one party is highly opinionated or emotional, if their approach is
threatening or extremely demanding, keeping quiet after they finish speaking can be quite
unsettling to them. It is like jujitsu; you allow them to be tripped up by their own forcefulness.
Most people are troubled by silence in the midst of heated discussion. Sometimes silence is viewed
as disapproval but since no specific disapproval has been voiced, it cannot be treated as an attack. It
has happened on many occasions that, when met with silence, people have modified their previous
statements to make them more palatable.
Silence is an important element in the crucial tool called Active Listening. The job of a good

Afro-Brazilian Self-Identity in Brazil Essay
Over the past several decades there has been an increase, in Brazil, of people whom self identify
as being black or Afro Brazilian. What sparked the rise in these identities in Brazil? Was it possible
material and intellectual gains or, sparked from activism, or from other possible factors. The black
movement and affirmation of black identity came about much later in Brazilthan in other countries
such as the United States. In my opinion the most important factors for the rise in these identities
are the material gains from the Quilombo Clause, the effects of affirmative actionand quotas, as
well as social activism. One important reason for the increase in people identifying as black in

For this community many, who did not prior, began to identify as black in order to qualify for
the Quilombo clause and get the material gain of land. Another factor that has led to the
increase in people identifying as black is affirmative action and the quota system. In the early
2000s Brazilian government started to introduce affirmative action with a quota system. Quotas
were added for university admissions, government jobs, film and media, among other things.
Affirmative action policies also favored places that gave fair employment to blacks (Htun). The
quota systems allow blacks to have more opportunities for jobs and other intellectual gains.
These gains are an incentive for people, whom may not have prior, to begin to self identify as
black in order to qualify for them. An example of the quota system in use are the students in

Participatory Response
According to Gerrig, participatory response is a process where readers encode the types of
mental contents as they would encode them if they were the participants in the narrative world.
Gerrig divides participatory response in the following seven categories, such as the emotional

leave the union after slavery was abolished, many changes for African Americans were put in
place.(Cozzens) Of these changes was the creation of the freedmen s bureau which served the
purpose of creating educational institutions for African Americans , this historically black
colleges and universities (HBCU s) were founded.(Purnell) Since then, the condition of African
Americans in America has changed, some progress has been made despite there being more
room for improvement. Within this tale of the African Americanstriving for success in
livelihood in America one may bring up an important argument or inquiry; are historically black
colleges and universities better for African American students than predominantly white
institutions(PWI)? This essay will argue as well as compare and contrast if HBCU s are better
for African American students or PWI s. In modern times many college or university graduates
regardless of race struggle to find careers. If there is a general challenge in finding a career
following undergrad then one can infer that this struggle may affect African American graduates
differently. Although,Bachelor s degrees carry the same weight the question whether HBCU s
better prepare black students for a post undergrad career opposed to PWI s still stands today.

The Funerary Model Of A Pig Sty
Mingqi
For this first paper assignment I have chosen to write my essay on The Funerary Model of a Pig
Sty. This artwork takes place in Ancient China around c. 2nd century BCE. It was designed and
used within the Han Dynasty early in China s history. These clay models like the pig sty and other
burial goods had a hand in furthering the development of Chinas cultural heritage and beliefs.
Within this paper I will be discussing my chosen MIA artwork, works that are similar but different
to this artwork, and also how all three works, although all different, have the same purpose for what
they have been made for. Then finally touching on how the context of the piece can change based
on its surroundings.

(MIA) The roofs are separated into four sections on both rooftops. On the square latrine roofs
there are four triangles. While on the rectangular latrine there are two triangles and two trapezoids
for the rooftops shape. I find that this adds to the depth of the roof giving this piece great detail.
One can see this not just in the structure, but also in the details of the animals found in the pigsty
model. For starters when looking around there are seven animals total. They are a boar or male pig,
a dog, a sow who is feeding her three young piglets, and finally a bird. (MIA) In this particular
model each animal is found doing something known for what that animal does in real life. For
example the boar is outside the pen eating slop by himself out of a bowl. While the dog is above
the boar on the walkway lazily sleeping his day away in what could be the hot sun. As one
moves along within the piece and looks inside the pen one can see a sow that is really doing the
most work in this model for she is feeding her three young piglets right in the middle of the pen.
This is okay because her and the piglets are the only four in the pen causing a feeling of calm to
the person looking at the work. Finally we move our eyes up and see a nest with a bird in it. This
bird seems to be stretching his wings or cleaning them minding its own business. All these
individual details make up one

Besides the length of the throw, the shooting time also depends on speed (p. 5). The playerswere put

Fast Food America
Fast food has become a major phenomenon here in America. According to Eric Schlosser, he
writes in the New York Times, on average $301,369,863 is spent a day on fast food. As
Schlosser shows, American people are abusing fast food. In accordance with fast food binging,
obesity has become a widespread epidemic. According to Joseph Mercola M.D., on a personal
website states obesity is, A chronic condition that develops as a result of an interaction between a
person s genetic makeup and their environment. Here Dr. Mercola expresses how obesity is

Besides the fact food preparation is fast, every year thousands of commercials can be seen on
TV. According to Spurlock, on average a single person watches about 10,000 different
commercials per year, most of them being junk or fast food products. These influential
commercials broadcast smart slogans and offer cheap food to attract customers. In a recent
survey, at the Brea Mall Food Court, when asked if they ate on a daily basis, 28 % of males said
yes, while 25% of women said they too ate out daily. A surprising portion of people, 30% said
they enjoyed the taste and quality, while majority about 46% said there was no time to cook at
home because of work or hectic schedules. With so many great food specials and a plethora of
commercials, its no wonder Americans turn to fast food for meals. Fast food is practical, quick,
and reasonably cheap, though unhealthy many seem to no care. The first signs of concern came
in 2003 when legislation was passed by Congress to help to slow obesity among children. The
new law banned all junk foods from public schools and enforced new cafeteria food requirements.
Robert Colin Carter a medical researcher from the John Hopkins School of Medicine showed that
the meals served prior to changes by school cafeteria s exceeded the newly established limits for
total and saturated fats, set by the National School Lunch Program and National School Breakfast

A Visit At The Bakersfield College Essay
A visit that I would like to discuss was with my 21 years old Native American female and her
newborn son in her home. The purpose of this home visit was to check how the infant was doing
because he was in the NICU after birth to rule out sepsis and also to check how the mother was
doing after the birth of her first child. She lives in her parent s house with her siblings and
boyfriend, and total seven people live in that house. The new mother is currently is not working,
but she is taking classes at the Bakersfield College. Her family is supportive, and the baby s father
is involved in the care of the Infant. Approximately 1/3 of Native Americans live in poverty and
experience the conditions related to poor living conditions such as tuberculosis, malnourishment,
and higher maternal and infant death rates (Allender, Rector, Warner, 2014). Some of the common
highest ranking health problems seen in Native American children are SIDS, congenital anomalies,
obesity, type II diabetes, and morbidity and mortality related to injuries (Allender et al., 2014).
Poor hygiene, packed housing conditions, and low immunization leads to the incidence of a variety
of contagious diseases in Native Americans (Allender et al., 2014). Native Americans prefer
customary healing and folk medicines compared to the Western medicine; they use plants and herbs
to cure illnesses (Allender et al., 2014). During this visit, I completed physical assessment of the

Gender As A Product Of Socialisation
Australian sociologist, Connell, has provided theories in order to aid in understanding the way in
which gender is manifested and shapes the experience of illness. Her Gender, Health and Theory
publication ultimately views gender as a product of socialisation (Connell, 2012). According to
Connell, Gender is seen as the active social process that brings reproductive bodies into history,
generating health consequences not as a side effect but in the making of genderitself (Connell, 2012,
p.1675). Her work ultimately emphasises that gender differences are formed by the expectations of
society, confining the ways in which males and females should act (Connell, 2012). Connell s
Masculinities theory furthers this concept. She defines masculinity as a set of perceived notions
and principles about the way in which men should or are expected to act (Connell, 1995). She
highlights that society dictates ways of being masculine and unmasculine, with unmasculine
typically insinuating femininity (Connell, 1995). She also argues that the terms masculine and
feminine point beyond categorical sex difference to the ways men differ among themselves, and
women differ among themselves, in matters of gender (Connell, 1995, p.69). Masculinities are
often favored over femininities, as men in general are paid better, enjoy more social freedom and
hold other benefits that women do not due to their gender (Connell, 1995). Therefore, women as a
group typically lack the societal power that

Phecda, Megrez, Alioth, Mizar, and Alkaid) are the brightest part of the constellation they make
whole, Ursa Major: The Great Bear. Although the constellation is certainly common enough to
recognize, I hold a more personal attachment to it. I grew up nearby a convent which owned a
crest marked with Ursa Major. The convent was a central root of the area, so the people often
had the crest and familiar Ursa Major constellation everywhere. When I look into the night sky

Intelligence Trap
What holds me back from becoming an improved critical thinker is a method of thinking called
the intelligence trap. The intelligence trap, founded in Edward de Bono s book, de Bono s
Thinking Course. The intelligence trap is when an opinion is formed initially and then due to
higher intelligence or practice in debating, is naturally able to defend the opinion, even against
scrutiny. This cause a trap where there no need to seek out other opinions, results, or
contradiction due to others inability to successfully challenge the opinion. My father loved to
debate when I was an adolescent, and I emulated this at a young age. Unfortunately, he was more
interested in winning rather than making a cohesive argument. At the end of every argument or
disagreement, he had to be the victor. Eventually, I was able to hold my opinions against him.
But this is how I devolve into this trap, I learned how to defend my already formed position, but
not necessarily taking the time to flush out the details, or seek alternatives. I was taught and
eventually saw it as a weakness to dawn a new opinion in the middle of the moment. I developed
my method of defending myself over time growing after every confrontation. My vernacular grew
as I senesce. This only increased my confidence incrementally.... Show more content on

People in low and middle income countries who suffer from CVDs and other noncommunicable
diseases have less access to effective and equitable health care services which respond to their

Common Carotid Arteries (CCA). This paper proposes a new approach for the transform domain
analysis of longitudinal B mode ultrasound CCA images using Multiwavelets. Analysis is done
using HM and GHM multiwavelets at various levels of decomposition. Multiwavelet preserves
high frequency information in image and provides good energy compaction efficiency. Energy
values of the coefficients of approximation, horizontal, vertical and diagonal details are calculated
and plotted for different levels. Plots of energy values show high correlation with the
abnormalities of CCA and offer the possibility of improved diagnosis of CVD. It is clear that the
energy values can be used as an index of individual

Self Identity Essay
There are numerous factors that either make up or restrain the self identity of a person or an
individual. Culture, in addition to family traditions, is one of the factors that affect the self identity
of an individual. When growing up, the environment around affect the personality, values, as well
as, beliefs of an individual. The environment includes friends, family members, and the people that
affect the life of an individual. So, if the environment is negative, then an individual will have low
self esteem. Moreover, as an individual grows up from being a child, they receive cultural values
from the family or the society around. There are questions raised on matters dealing with identity:

The question is how do these issues affect self identity? It is certain that people could choose what
to do or wear, but what influenced these decisions? Scientific research has it that, beliefs, traits and
emotions can be factors inherited from parents through the DNA. The memory of an event
experienced by a grandparent could be passed through generations. This means that there exist
certain identity traits in the genes of an individual. Images of violence or shows that are less
empowering could have a certain negative amount of influence in self identity. A grown up also
faces pressure from family and community beliefs, which make them put on a different piece of
identity from their own. A theory known as the postmodern theory, explains that identity has
become a mask put over an individual, and not from within. The mask is created as a result of
influence from external forces that dictate what is right and what is wrong, or what is normal and
accepted. The postmodern theory goes ahead to stipulate that, as an individual, one creates a self
identity through these external influences. People do this so as to fit into the environment around
them. In the United States, for example, there is a tendency of consumer culture to influence the
way most Americans think and make decisions. Giddens has described that the lifestyle of an

To begin, there were numerous different topics the young scholars had to memorize and master.
The subjects that were focused on primarily were the classic works of Confucius and other great

for they were reserved for the commoners to study. The typical student had to memorize the four
books; Mencius, Analects, Doctrine of the Mean, and Great Learning. (Crozier, 2002). He
would also have to memorize the five classics; Spring and Autumn Annals, I Ching (Book of

these works of art, the scholars had to memorize over 400,000 different characters at a rate of

  • 2. Adoption of Leed as a Green Building Rating System in Nigeria ARC 879: PROJECT FEASIBILITY STUDIES 2012 Adoption of LEEDВ® as a Green Building Rating System in Nigeria Going Green In Nigeria OMOEFE AGHIMIEN 119051038 ABSTRACT Green building rating systems are in a state of constant flux and often differ from region to region. Regardless, fundamental principles persist from which the rating system is derived. These include sustainable sites and structure design efficiency, water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials efficiency, indoor environmental quality, operations and maintenance optimization, innovation and design process, waste and toxic reduction etc. The essence of green building is an optimization of one or more of these principles. The green building rating system, LEEDВ®... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... * Reduced air and water pollution (with direct health benefits) * Reduced water consumption * Limited waste generation due to recycling and reuse * Reduced pollution loads * Increased user productivity * Enhanced image and marketability. The concept of sustainable development can be traced to the energy (especially fossil oil) crisis and the environment pollution concern in the 1970s. The green building movement originated from the need and desire for more energy efficient and environmentally friendly construction practices. There are a number of motives to building green, including environmental, economic, and social benefits. However, modern sustainability initiatives call for an integrated and synergistic design to both new construction and in the retrofitting of an existing structure. Also known as sustainable design, this approach integrates the building life cycle with each green practice employed with a design purpose to create a synergy amongst the practices used. Green building brings together a vast array of practices and techniques to reduce and ultimately eliminate the impacts of buildings on the environment and human health. It often emphasizes taking advantage of renewable resources, e.g., using sunlight through passive solar, active solar, and photovoltaic techniques and using plants and trees through green roofs, rain gardens, and for reduction of rainwater run off. They start to spend more time with friends and family, striving to make as many memories as they can. They also look back on all the academic challenges they overcame. One of which would be reading all the novels assigned, or reading a summary of the book. A book which could stand out to them would be The Deathof Ivan Ilych written by Leo Tolstoy. This is a novelon how a man s life, and how he died. Ivan Ilych, from a very young age, was always worried about his social standpoint. Right before he died, he tried to fix his relationship between him and his family by telling them he loves them. This can also be seen as a warning, warning seniors to make memories while they can and to act in a way they will not regret. In the novel, it states, Ivan Ilych s life had been most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible, (Ch. 2). Dachuck ENG 1D7b 13 January 2016 Symbolic Role Played by Cosmic Imagery in Romeo and Juliet Cosmic imagery and allusions to stars have been used for centuries to describe divine and supernatural events on earth. In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, cosmic references are used to amplify the deep emotions of love Romeo and Juliet feel for each other. Vivid cosmic imagery intensifies emotions of love and hate, bringing the play to life. Cosmic references include the idea of fate written in the stars, Romeo and Juliet s blossoming love revolving around stars and the ironic role played by celestial objects, leading ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their abandonment of stars leads to their early demise as they attempted to control their own lives. Stars are known for their beauty and dazzling effect which is related to fate as well. This idea of fate enhances their love for each other and the cosmic imagery adds a beautiful touch. Later, Romeo foreshadows his untimely demise in Act 1 when he claims Some consequence yet hanging in the stars/ shall begin his fearful date. (1.4.107 108). Romeo knows that it is fate who directs his sail, but his trust in the stars quickly diminishes throughout the play, although his frequent references to cosmic objects remain. They both believe in fate, but as trouble arises from their relationship, they lose hope and deny the stars as guides. Cosmic imagery is used by Romeo and Juliet to describe each other, adding a sense of unique intimacy to their love. But the stars never fated for them to be together for eternity, ruining their majestic love story. Throughout Romeo and Juliet s flourishing relationship, celestial imagery is used when talking about each other and bringing out the pure love they have for one another. Through a combination of metaphors, personification, poetry, similes, and allusions, their emotions for each other are shown with celestial imagery being the center theme of their love. • 6. Disadvantages Of Engineering Materials Introduction Engineering materials is classified into families based on their material structure, compositions, properties etc, as shown in the figure: Metals Ferrous metals: These are the metals and the alloys that are composed of high amounts of the iron content. These are the strongest materials that are available and can be used in the applications where strength of the material is compulsorily high and at a low cost and also where the weight is not a primary importance. Ferrous metals are used in various applications such as: building of bridges, structures of huge buildings, rolling stock, the bodies and highly stressed engine parts of vehicles running on the road, railway lines and locomotives. The ferrous metals alone can also be divided into Groups , and these are as follows. Non ferrous metals: These materials refer to the remaining metals known in the world. As they lack of mechanical strength these clean metals can hardly be used as structural materials. They are used where their superior properties such as electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance are essential. Aluminum and Copper are used as electrical conductors and, composed with sheet zinc and sheet lead, are used as roofing materials. They are primarily used with other metals to improve the material strength. Some extensively used non ferrous metals and alloys that are available are shown in figure. • 7. Quantitative And Qualitative Research Design Researchers employ a number of research methodologies to carry out, test, analyze and describe phenomena they are interested in studying. Among the most widely used methodologies are quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method (Cozby Bates, 2012, Garza Landrum, 2015; Leedy Ormrod, 2013; Creswell, 2013; Gergen, 2015). Qualitative and quantitative research designs, for example, are types of research approaches that provide clear directions on how to carry out a research plan (Creswell, 2013). The quantitative research design is profoundly deep rooted in the discipline of psychology where it has been used through the perspective of post positivist thoughts (Creswell, 2013). On the other hand, the qualitative researchdesign is deeply rooted in the field of Anthropology, where researchers have developed several naturalistic observational techniques to explain lived phenomena (Bates Cosby, 2012; Creswell, 2013; Garza Landrum, 2015). Quantitative and qualitative research designs share several similarities as well as differences in how they can be employed in conducting research procedures (Yilmaz, 2013). Approaches To Research: Qualitative The qualitative design is an inductive, interpretive and naturalistic approach use in studying people, cases, phenomena, social situations and processes in their natural settings to describe in descriptive terms the meanings that people attach to their lived experiences (Yilmaz, 2013; Cozby Bates, 2012). This section of the Code provides, When there is a nonresident individual or foreign corporation that has United States source gross transportation income for such taxable year, there shall be a 4% tax. 883(a)(5) provides for a special rule that does not take into account any failure of a foreign country to grant an exemption to a corporation organized in the United States if the corporation is subject to tax by the foreign country on a residence basis pursuant to provisions with the foreign law. The boy is very emotionally attached to the small things in life, making him very fragile minded during this cruel world. Ultimately throughout the entire novel, the man is suffering from a cough that grows stronger as he grows weaker. By the end of the book, the man and the boy have been through hell together. Sadly, the man dies and this leaves the boy feeling alone in this cold and empty world. At the last moment before the book comes to an end, the boy is swept up by a new group. Many say that you d have to do something unthinkable to have a punishment as grim as exile. During the lawless time of monsters and unruly Kings, the Anglo Saxon era of poems make that all very practical. The creators of each poem discuss the personal endeavors of each exile and how they each come to their own acceptance, or not. The seafarer , Wanderer , and the Wife s Lament use various literary devices to express the emotional toil, sorrow, and each theme of their exile. First of all, in The Seafarer the writer discusses the internal conflicts he is having among the waves of the sea. Even though this self chosen exile causes this man pain and sorrow, peace is not a common entity for him while on land. The time for journeys would come and my soul / called me eagerly out, sent me over/ the horizon, seeking foreigners homes. (lines 36 38). The building is described as being a certain sinister block which suggests it looks evil. The atmosphere is unwelcoming around the door as it has neither bell nor knocker which shows that Mr Hyde did not want any visitors. Most of the changes from Dr Jekyll into Mr Hyde take place in the laboratory. This is an odd setting to use, as it is a symbol of what could be the origin of evil. Stevenson insinuates this by the way he uses the butler (Poole) to say that it used to be a dissecting room this is where many dead bodies will have been experimented on. Since the symbols of evil in this novella are Mr Hyde and his use of medicine this could also be the case as the potion that went wrong, and created and evil individual, was made here. • 29. Wireless Sensor Network ( Wsn ) Wireless sensor network From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a computer network consisting of spatially distributed autonomous devices using sensors to cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions, such as temperature, sound, vibration, pressure, motion or pollutants, at different locations.[1] The development of wireless sensor networks was originally motivated by military applications such as battlefield surveillance. However, wireless sensor networks are now used in many civilian application areas, including environment and habitat monitoring, healthcare applications, home automation, and traffic control.[1][2] In addition to one or more sensors, each node in a sensor network is typically equipped with a radio transceiver or other wireless communications device, a small microcontroller, and an energy source, usually a battery. The size a single sensor node can vary from shoebox sized nodes down to devices the size of grain of dust.[1] The cost of sensor nodes is similarly variable, ranging from hundreds of dollars to a few cents, depending on the size of the sensor network and the complexity required of individual sensor nodes.[1] Size and cost constraints on sensor nodes result in corresponding constraints on resources such as energy, memory, computational speed and bandwidth.[1] In computer science, wireless sensor networks are an active research area with numerous workshops and conferences arranged each year. ... • 37. The On The Processing Of Swallowing The processing of swallowing, called deglutition, contains three main stages. The first stage is voluntary, which is the oral stage in the mouth in which we control. The second stage is the pharyngeal stage, and that is autonomic; controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Lastly, the third stage is esophageal stage, which entails the food traveling from the pharynx downward to the stomachthrough the esophagus. The esophageal stage is also autonomic. Deglutition is a complicated process involving multiple structures of the oral cavity, pharynx, and esophagus. The first stage is initiated when food enters the mouth. The process starts with chewing, or mastication. The tongue can control movements of the food within the mouth during mastication. Saliva also moistens the food as the food is being masticated. While the tongue, teeth, and cheeks are working together, the process of mastication turns the food into bolus, which is a solid collection of food. The tongue presses the bolus against the hard palate as swallowing occurs, gathering a backwards movement. The bolus goes through the oral cavity down to the oropharynx. After this voluntary stage, everything else becomes autonomic. The sensory nerves located in the oropharynx, sends messages to the medulla oblongata via cranial nerves (trigeminal and glossopharyngeal nerves). The medulla oblongata comprises the swallowing center, known as the deglutition center. The bolus of food is processed from the oral cavity to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Gender As A Product Of Socialisation Australian sociologist, Connell, has provided theories in order to aid in understanding the way in which gender is manifested and shapes the experience of illness. Her Gender, Health and Theory publication ultimately views gender as a product of socialisation (Connell, 2012). According to Connell, Gender is seen as the active social process that brings reproductive bodies into history, generating health consequences not as a side effect but in the making of genderitself (Connell, 2012, p.1675). Her work ultimately emphasises that gender differences are formed by the expectations of society, confining the ways in which males and females should act (Connell, 2012). Connell s Masculinities theory furthers this concept. She defines masculinity as a set of perceived notions and principles about the way in which men should or are expected to act (Connell, 1995). She highlights that society dictates ways of being masculine and unmasculine, with unmasculine typically insinuating femininity (Connell, 1995). She also argues that the terms masculine and feminine point beyond categorical sex difference to the ways men differ among themselves, and women differ among themselves, in matters of gender (Connell, 1995, p.69). Masculinities are often favored over femininities, as men in general are paid better, enjoy more social freedom and hold other benefits that women do not due to their gender (Connell, 1995). Domain Analysis Of Common Carotid Artery Images Using... 1 Transform Domain Analysis of Common Carotid Artery Images using Multiwavelets for the Diagnosis of Cardiovascular Diseases R.Nandakumar 1 and K.B. Jayanthi 2 1Professor, Department of ECE, K.S.R.Institute for Engineering and Technology 2Professor, Department of ECE, K.S.Rangasamy College of Technology E mail: nandhu.r79@gmail.com, jayanthikb@gmail.com ABSTRACT: According to the report given by World Health Organization, by 2015 almost 20 million people will die from cardiovascular diseases (CVD). People in low and middle income countries who suffer from CVDs and other noncommunicable diseases have less access to effective and equitable health care services which respond to their needs. The main objective of this work is to develop a classifier for the diagnosis of abnormal Common Carotid Arteries (CCA). This paper proposes a new approach for the transform domain analysis of longitudinal B mode ultrasound CCA images using Multiwavelets. Analysis is done using HM and GHM multiwavelets at various levels of decomposition. Multiwavelet preserves high frequency information in image and provides good energy compaction efficiency. Energy values of the coefficients of approximation, horizontal, vertical and diagonal details are calculated and plotted for different levels. Plots of energy values show high correlation with the abnormalities of CCA and offer the possibility of improved diagnosis of CVD. It is clear that the energy values can be used as an index of individual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 55. Self Identity Essay There are numerous factors that either make up or restrain the self identity of a person or an individual. Culture, in addition to family traditions, is one of the factors that affect the self identity of an individual. When growing up, the environment around affect the personality, values, as well as, beliefs of an individual. The environment includes friends, family members, and the people that affect the life of an individual. So, if the environment is negative, then an individual will have low self esteem. Moreover, as an individual grows up from being a child, they receive cultural values from the family or the society around. There are questions raised on matters dealing with identity: Can an individual choose his or her own... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The question is how do these issues affect self identity? It is certain that people could choose what to do or wear, but what influenced these decisions? Scientific research has it that, beliefs, traits and emotions can be factors inherited from parents through the DNA. The memory of an event experienced by a grandparent could be passed through generations. This means that there exist certain identity traits in the genes of an individual. Images of violence or shows that are less empowering could have a certain negative amount of influence in self identity. A grown up also faces pressure from family and community beliefs, which make them put on a different piece of identity from their own. A theory known as the postmodern theory, explains that identity has become a mask put over an individual, and not from within. The mask is created as a result of influence from external forces that dictate what is right and what is wrong, or what is normal and accepted. The postmodern theory goes ahead to stipulate that, as an individual, one creates a self identity through these external influences. People do this so as to fit into the environment around them. In the United States, for example, there is a tendency of consumer culture to influence the way most Americans think and make decisions. Giddens has described that the lifestyle of an individual ... Hcs 245-Week 5 (Week 1 DQ #2) Class, In our first DQ, we discussed the various cultural barriers that we might see on a routine basis; however there are still many more barriers to effective communication. These might be more associated with physical and psychological barriers. Here are two real world questions that we most of us will encounter throughout our health care career regularly... How might a provider communicate more effectively with a person who is hearing impaired? Also, how might a provider communicate more effectively with an adolescent versus an adult? Retrieved from http:/ /www.skillscascade.com Net s Comments Angel you have listed a great view point on communicating with one who is hearing impaired. A great invention is the CART which as you mentioned is a computer assisted real time transcription or where the hearing impaired person uses a computer to communicate. Most commonly language used is sign language and speech interprets. I think most adolescents face issues with communicating with Providers because they have not builded a bond. If a child doesn t feel comfortable they tend not to say much and shy away . I think providers should try to become more involved or try methods to get the child interested as I mentioned in my post such as trying to offer a treat for communicating . In other words once the provider sees you they should state great job and give the child a blow pop or candy so the next visit they are familiar of a treat , this will eventually open up a wide communication field. I know it worked when I was a child , Posted by Lachelle Gilbert There are ways to communicate with the hearing impaired and one way is to provide the same respect, empathy, probing with a combination of other necessity like speech reading, lipreading, writing, and visual language system and assistence of an interpreter. • 57. Women In Imperial China First of all, the Imperial Examinations were biased against women. At this particular point in time, women were considered to be worth close to nothing. The author of China s Examination Hell: The Civil Service Examinations of Imperial China says a man who had no sons was considered to be childless. (Miyazaki, 1976, p. 13). In other words, the female gender weren t even considered people, lower than a person on the social scale. Women were expected at stay at home and care for the children. The idea of working was preposterous, let alone help run a country. Because of the fact that women were not born men, they were denied all the opportunities men had. From the day a baby girl was born, the entire family would go into a state of depression.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To begin, there were numerous different topics the young scholars had to memorize and master. The subjects that were focused on primarily were the classic works of Confucius and other great philosophers. Education for these elite scholars didn t consist of math, science, or technology, for they were reserved for the commoners to study. The typical student had to memorize the four books; Mencius, Analects, Doctrine of the Mean, and Great Learning. (Crozier, 2002). He would also have to memorize the five classics; Spring and Autumn Annals, I Ching (Book of Changes), Book of Rites, Book of Documents, and Classic of Poetry. (Crozier, 2002). On top of these works of art, the scholars had to memorize over 400,000 different characters at a rate of 200 characters a day. (Miyazaki, 1976, p. 16). That is ridiculous! With all of these tools that are now engraved inside these young men s heads, they are then presented with an Eight legged Essay on the day of the test. This is an essay that is designed to answer a hard question about anything in these works or other works of Confucius. It s called an Eight Legged Essay because in order to get full credit, one must answer the question using eight paragraphs or parts. (Octave of Education, 2013). The topics that must be memorized to even have a chance at passing the test, are a lot for a boy to learn at a young ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
