LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
INTRODUCTION
• lymphatic system is part of the circulatory
system and a vital part of the immune system,
comprising a network of lymphatic vessels that
carry a clear fluid called lymph directionally
towards the heart.
• One of the main functions of the lymph system is
to provide an accessory return route to the blood
for the surplus three litres.
• Main function of the lymphatic system is
defensive action.
• Lymph is very similar to blood plasma: it
contains lymphocytes and other white blood
cells.
FUNCTIONS
• It is responsible for the removal of interstitial
fluid from tissues
• It transports white blood cells to and from the
lymph nodes into the bones
• The lymph transports antigen-presenting cells,
such as dendritic cells, to the lymph nodes where
an immune response is stimulated.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
• Lymphadenopathy
• Lymphedema
• Cancer
• Lymphangitis
• Kikuchi disease
• Chylothorax
• Phlebitis or venitis is the inflammation of a vein,
usually in the legs. It most commonly occurs in
superficial veins. Phlebitis often occurs in
conjunction with thrombosis and is then
called thrombophlebitis or superficial
thrombophlebitis.
• Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot
inside a blood vessel, obstructing the flow of
blood through the circulatory system.
• Gangrene is a type of necrosis caused by a
critically insufficient blood supply.
ICD-10-CM-GUIDELINES
• Phlebitis and thrombophlebitis-i80
• Portal vein thrombosis-i81
• Other venous embolism and thrombosis-i82
• Varicose veins of lower extremities-i83
• Esophageal varices-i85
• Varicose veins of other sites-i86
• Other disorders of veins-i87
• Nonspecific lymphadenitis-i88
• Other noninfective disorders of lymphatic
vessels and lymph nodes-i89
