A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) acquires brain signals, extracts informative features, and translates these features to commands to control an external device. This work investigates the application of a non-invasive Electroencephalography (EEG)-based BCI to identify brain signal features in regard to actual hand movement . This provides a more refined control for a BCI system in terms of movement parameters. An experiment was performed to collect EEG data from subjects while they performed right and left hand movement. The informative features from the data was obtained using the Wavelet-Common Spatial Pattern (W-CSP) algorithm that provided high temporal-spatial-spectral resolution. The applicability of these features to classify the two movement and to reconstruct the movement profile was studied. SVM classifier is used to classify the two class of hand movement. The spatial patterns of the W-CSP features obtained showed activations in parietal and motor areas of the brain. This work promises to provide a more refined control in BCI by including control of movement speed.

Nonlinear filtering approaches to field mapping by sampling using mobile sensorsijassn
This work proposes a novel application of existing powerful nonlinear filters, such as the standard
Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), some of its variants and the standard Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF), to
the estimation of a continuous spatio-temporal field that is spread over a wide area, and hence represented
by a large number of parameters when parameterized. We couple these filters with the powerful scheme of
adaptive sampling performed by a single mobile sensor, and investigate their performances with a view to
significantly improving the speed and accuracy of the overall field estimation. An extensive simulation work
was carried out to show that different variants of the standard EKF and the standard UKF can be used to
improve the accuracy of the field estimate. This paper also aims to provide some guideline for the user of
these filters in reaching a practical trade-off between the desired field estimation accuracy and the
required computational load.

ADAPTIVE SEGMENTATION OF CELLS AND PARTICLES IN FLUORESCENT MICROSCOPE IMAGEJournal For Research
Understanding the mechanisms of cell motility and their regulation is an important challenge in biomedical research. The ability of cells to exert forces on their environment and alter their shape as they move is essential to various biological processes such as the immune response, embryonic development, or tumor genesis .Recent technological advances in con-focal fluorescence microscopy have given researchers the opportunity to investigate these complex processes in vivo. However, they also lead to a tremendous increase in the amount of image data acquired during the studies. Therefore, the analysis of time-lapse experiments relies increasingly on automated image processing techniques. Namely, there is a high demand for fast and robust methods to help biologists to quantitatively analyze time-lapse image data. The potential of the proposed tracking scheme and the advantages and disadvantages of both frameworks are demonstrated on 2-D and 3-D time-lapse series of rat adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells and human lung squamous cell carcinoma cells, respectively. The crucial tasks are, in particular, segmenting, tracking, and evaluating movement tracks and morphological changes of cells, sub-cellular components and other particles.

In this paper we propose an algorithm for distributed
optimization in mobile nodes. Compared with many
published works, an important consideration here is that the
nodes do not know the cost function beforehand. Instead of
decision-making based on linear combination of the neighbor
estimates, the proposed algorithm relies on information-rich
nodes that are iteratively identified. To quickly identify the
information rich node, the algorithm adopts a larger step size
during the initial iterations. The proposed algorithm can be used
in many different applications, such as distributed odor source
localization and mobile robots. We present simulation results to
show the performance of our proposed algorithm
In the present work, Lyapunov stability theory, nonlinear adaptive control law and the parameter update
law were utilized to derive the state of two new chaotic reversal systems after being synchronized by the
function projective method. Using this technique allows for a scaling function instead of a constant thereby
giving a better method in applications in secure communication. Numerical simulations are presented to
demonstrate the effective nature of the proposed scheme of synchronization for the new chaotic reversal
system.
Demonstration of programmable quantum simulations of lattice models using a s...jamalbusnaina
There has been a growing interest in realizing quantum simulators for important physical systems where perturbative methods are ineffective. The scalability and flexibility of circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) make it a promising platform for implementing various types of simulators, including lattice models of strongly-coupled field theories. With this in mind, we use a multimode superconducting parametric cavity to create programmable lattices of bosonic modes by parametrically pumping at mode-difference frequencies. The choice of pump frequencies allows changing the graph of the lattice in situ. Further, the resulting hopping terms induced between the modes can be made complex by controlling the relative phases of the parametric drives. This enables us to study a wide variety of interesting lattice models. For instance, controlling the total loop phase in closed plaquettes allows us to simulate the motion of particles in a static gauge field, including producing nonreciprocal transport. The system can also realize models with topological features such as the bosonic Creutz ladder. In this talk, we present experimental results on a variety of different small lattice models.
Particle Swarm Optimization Based QoS Aware Routing for Wireless Sensor Networksijsrd.com
Efficiency in a Wireless Sensor Network can only be obtained with effective routing mechanisms. This paper uses Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO, a metaheuristic algorithm to perform the process of routing. Since PSO does not have a defined fitness function, it is flexible to incorporate user defined QoS parameters to define the fitness function.
APPLICATION OF PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION TO MICROWAVE TAPERED MICROSTRIP LINEScseij
Application of metaheuristic algorithms has been of continued interest in the field of electrical engineering because of their powerful features. In this work special design is done for a tapered transmission line used for matching an arbitrary real load to a 50Ω line. The problem at hand is to match this arbitray load to 50 Ω line using three section tapered transmission line with impedances in decreasing order from the load. So the problem becomes optimizing an equation with three unknowns with various conditions. The optimized values are obtained using Particle Swarm Optimization. It can easily be shown that PSO is very strong in solving this kind of multiobjective optimization problems.

Decentralized data fusion approach is one in which features are extracted and processed individually and finally fused to obtain global estimates. The paper presents decentralized data fusion algorithm using factor analysis model. Factor analysis is a statistical method used to study the effect and interdependence of various factors within a system. The proposed algorithm fuses accelerometer and gyroscope data in an inertial measurement unit (IMU). Simulations are carried out on Matlab platform to illustrate the algorithm.

Coupling-Based Internal Clock Synchronization for Large Scale Dynamic Distrib...Angelo Corsaro
This paper studies the problem of realizing a common software clock among a large set of nodes without an external time reference (i.e., internal clock synchronization), any centralized control and where nodes can join and leave the distributed system at their will. The paper proposes an internal clock synchronization algorithm which combines the gossip-based paradigm with a nature-inspired approach, coming from the coupled oscillators phenomenon, to cope with scale and churn. The algorithm works on the top of an overlay network and uses a uniform peer sampling service to fullfill each node’s local view. Therefore, differently from clock synchronization protocols for small scale and static distributed systems, here each node synchronizes regularly with only the neighbors in its local view and not with the whole system. Theoretical and empirical evaluations of the convergence speed and of the synchronization error of the coupled-based internal clock synchronization algorithm have been carried out, showing how convergence time and the synchronization error depends on the coupling factor and on the local view size. Moreover the variation of the synchronization error with respect to churn and the impact of a sudden variation of the number of nodes have been analyzed to show the stability of the algorithm. In all these contexts, the algorithm shows nice performance and very good self-organizing properties. Finally, we showed how the assumption on the existence of a uniform peer-sampling service is instrumental for the good behavior of the algorithm.

Earliest Galaxies in the JADES Origins Field: Luminosity Function and Cosmic ...Sérgio Sacani
We characterize the earliest galaxy population in the JADES Origins Field (JOF), the deepest
imaging field observed with JWST. We make use of the ancillary Hubble optical images (5 filters
spanning 0.4−0.9µm) and novel JWST images with 14 filters spanning 0.8−5µm, including 7 mediumband filters, and reaching total exposure times of up to 46 hours per filter. We combine all our data
at > 2.3µm to construct an ultradeep image, reaching as deep as ≈ 31.4 AB mag in the stack and
30.3-31.0 AB mag (5σ, r = 0.1” circular aperture) in individual filters. We measure photometric
redshifts and use robust selection criteria to identify a sample of eight galaxy candidates at redshifts
z = 11.5 − 15. These objects show compact half-light radii of R1/2 ∼ 50 − 200pc, stellar masses of
M⋆ ∼ 107−108M⊙, and star-formation rates of SFR ∼ 0.1−1 M⊙ yr−1
. Our search finds no candidates
at 15 < z < 20, placing upper limits at these redshifts. We develop a forward modeling approach to
infer the properties of the evolving luminosity function without binning in redshift or luminosity that
marginalizes over the photometric redshift uncertainty of our candidate galaxies and incorporates the
impact of non-detections. We find a z = 12 luminosity function in good agreement with prior results,
and that the luminosity function normalization and UV luminosity density decline by a factor of ∼ 2.5
from z = 12 to z = 14. We discuss the possible implications of our results in the context of theoretical
models for evolution of the dark matter halo mass function.
(May 29th, 2024) Advancements in Intravital Microscopy- Insights for Preclini...Scintica Instrumentation
Intravital microscopy (IVM) is a powerful tool utilized to study cellular behavior over time and space in vivo. Much of our understanding of cell biology has been accomplished using various in vitro and ex vivo methods; however, these studies do not necessarily reflect the natural dynamics of biological processes. Unlike traditional cell culture or fixed tissue imaging, IVM allows for the ultra-fast high-resolution imaging of cellular processes over time and space and were studied in its natural environment. Real-time visualization of biological processes in the context of an intact organism helps maintain physiological relevance and provide insights into the progression of disease, response to treatments or developmental processes.
In this webinar we give an overview of advanced applications of the IVM system in preclinical research. IVIM technology is a provider of all-in-one intravital microscopy systems and solutions optimized for in vivo imaging of live animal models at sub-micron resolution. The system’s unique features and user-friendly software enables researchers to probe fast dynamic biological processes such as immune cell tracking, cell-cell interaction as well as vascularization and tumor metastasis with exceptional detail. This webinar will also give an overview of IVM being utilized in drug development, offering a view into the intricate interaction between drugs/nanoparticles and tissues in vivo and allows for the evaluation of therapeutic intervention in a variety of tissues and organs. This interdisciplinary collaboration continues to drive the advancements of novel therapeutic strategies.

Motivation: Authors in [1] cite a locational optimization algorithm in [2] as inspiration
Locational Optimization: Fixed number of facilities, searching for optimal placement of facilities given some
objective and constraints
• Coverage(Area Problem)[2]: points , radii ,
objective function:
The Voronoi Tessellation of points is a
partition of a domain into regions , where
is the set of points closer to than any other ,
denoted the Voronoi cell of . In an -limited Voronoi
Tessellation, the cell for is .
• controls fractional value of displacements, but is a free parameter : no pre-determined value
• Recommendation in [1]: if iterations don’t converge, pick smaller or decrease per iteration,
very ad hoc
• must be chosen for every different simulation so that iterations converge, but convergence
does not guarantee that gives optimal placement
• Is it possible determine within the algorithm that:
1) allows convergence?
2) gives optimal configuration for a given SPH problem?
: A Free Parameter?
Application:
• Redefine , without
• For the relaxation algorithm, it can be shown that approximates
• With , we can frame the relaxation algorithm as a gradient ascent algorithm
Maximizing A(P) for an r-limited Voronoi Tessellation[2]:
• For gradient ascent, each must move in the direction of
• faces the same direction as the averaged normal
vector to the arcs on the boundary of cell
Relaxation Algorithm as Gradient Ascent
Relaxation Algorithm(“WVT”)
In [1], technique relaxes particles through net displacements based
on distances to neighbors and smoothing lengths:
Net displacement of particle for all within
Contribution of neighboring particle inversely proportional to
i.e. : close neighbors displace much more than far ones
To maximize a function with a gradient ascent algorithm, we generate a sequence of inputs
with the property that at every , and with the rule ,
where is a scalar denoted the step-size, chosen to guarantee a sufficient increase for .The
process of choosing is known as a line search.
• Gradient descent for coverage: , corresponds to ,
• Redefine as the step-size chosen from a line search for the above problem
Significance:
1) that admits a convergent setup is now determined within the relaxation algorithm
2) local optimization framework can measure how effective a setup is
3) gradient descent framework can generate closer to optimal configurations
Implementation:
• Tested various modifications of the relaxation algorithm and coverage function
• Implemented in Draco from the PMESH project
• Currently testing accuracy of algorithm with line-search mu in Spheral++
We investigate the results given in [1] concerning particle
configurations for Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics configurations. In
particular, we broaden the algorithm given for relaxation of initial
particle placements in regards to locational optimization and gradient
ascent methods.
Abstract

of discrete particles are carried with the flow:
• The fluid properties at any position are interpolated from property of nearby
particles
• Fluid property , position with smoothing length , smoothing kernel 𝑊
• Smoothing length determines the smoothing neighborhood of [1]
• Spatially Uniform v. Spatially Adaptive Distributions:
• Smoothing lengths : identical or varying across domain
• Initial particle setup needs:
• Interpolation Accuracy: Should accurately reproduce a given density field,
perform well with uniform and varying densities
• Isotropy: Setup should not cause preferred directions in simulation
