Volleyball, born in 1895 through the inventive mind of William G. Morgan, originated as "Mintonette" within YMCA circles in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. Quickly evolving from its humble beginnings, it underwent a significant name change to "volleyball" as Alfred Halstead aptly captured its essence during an early exhibition. With standardized rules established, the sport spread rapidly, finding fertile ground within YMCA organizations and beyond. The formation of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) in 1947 marked a pivotal moment, ushering in a new era of international recognition and growth. Volleyball made its Olympic debut in 1964, captivating audiences worldwide with its fast-paced action and competitive spirit. Over the years, beach volleyball emerged as a popular variant, further diversifying the sport's appeal. Today, volleyball stands as a global phenomenon, celebrated for its athleticism, teamwork, and universal accessibility, embodying the enduring spirit of camaraderie and competition.

The Golden Group is over. Can a new group step up? Two years ago, Kevin De Bruyne plunged Belgium’s Euro 2024 plans into disorder when he claimed the team was “too old” to win in an interview with The Protector. That Belgian squad had 10 players over 30 and the maximum average age of any Euro Cup 2024 team at the competition. A group-stage exit and just one goal at the World Cup put Belgium on course for a restructure.

Coach Domenico Tedesco has managed a tactical shakeup and a regular exit for some of the oldest players. Experienced bests remain, not least the 37-year-old Jan Vertonghen in defense, the 32-year-old De Bruyne himself in midfield, and 31-year-old Romelu Lukaku up visible.
Still, younger actors like De Bruyne’s Manchester City partner Jeremy Doku bring fresh vitality to the team. Euro Cup Germany Qualifying unbeaten with just four goals allowed from eight games was a welcome sign of accomplishment back on track under Tedesco.

Reed’s 18 points and 10 rebounds helped No. 9 Tarleton defeat No. 4 Angelo State 85-67. It was Reed’s LSC-
leading eighth double-double of the season, which ranks second in the nation. Reed was 6-11 from the floor
and 6-6 from the free-throw line in the win. Reed followed with a 17-point, 8-rebound performance in a win on
the road at A&M-Kingsville, the first home loss for the Javelina’s this season. Reed averaged 17.5 points on 55
percent shooting and nine rebounds in the two wins as Tarleton improved to 13-2 overall and 3-0 in the Lone

MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Xavier Smith, Tarleton State University, JR, Forward, Richardson, Texas, Plano East HS
Smith posted nine points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench for the No. 9-ranked Texans in an
85-67 win over No. 4 Angelo State. Smith led the Texans’ defense in limiting Angelo State to season lows in
points (67) and field goal percentage (36.5) when the Rams came in averaging 95 points per game. Smith
also prevented the Rams from a single second-chance point, the only time all season for ASU. Smith followed
with four blocks and four rebounds in a tough road win over A&M-Kingsville. With the help of 6-foot-8 Smith
protecting the rim and altering shots, the Texans limited the Javelinas to only 47 points on 30 percent shooting.
It was the third four-block game of the year for Smith and the ninth double-digit block game for the junior
forward. With Smith in the paint, opponents only averaged 57 points against Tarleton on 33 percent shooting.

game this week bring her streak to four consecutive
games scoring in double-digits. Scott had 10 points
on 5-of-9 shooting against Texas A&M-Kingsville, and
15 points on 5-of-8 shooting against Angelo State
including two three-balls that were big in that road
game. On the week, Scott shot just under 60 percent
from the floor and led the Lions with 7 assists.
Erin Maxwell, Texas Woman’s University, led the
team with 10.0 rebounds per game and 4.0 blocks per
game while averaging 8.0 points in the two games last
week. Maxwell tied her career-high with 14 rebounds
and blocked four shots in a road win at Eastern New
Mexico and then added a team-best 10 points, six
rebounds and four blocks against No. 1 West Texas
A&M. With 40 seconds left in the game and the
Pioneers leading 55-53 against ENMU, she recorded
her fourth block of the game on a jumper by ENMU’s
Mikaehla Conner and grabbed her 14th rebound
to seal the win for TWU. Maxwell also helped the
Pioneers hold the Lady Buffs to just 59 points (14
points under their season average) and 38.0 percent
shooting. With eight blocks last week she now has 56
blocks on the season and has tied the single-season
school record.
Ikpeaku Iwobi, Tarleton State University, was a
dominant force on the glass last week as the junior
from Houston totaled 15 rebounds in two games,
including 14 on the defensive end, to lift Tarleton to
wins against Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
She grabbed eight boards in the win against Angelo
State and seven in Saturday’s comeback against the
Javelinas. For the week, she totaled 16 points and
four steals to go along with her 15 total boards. Iwobi
anchored the TexAnn defense that allowed Angelo
and Kingsville to shoot just .366 from the floor and
average 60.0 points per game, which included the
league’s top-scoring offense entering Wednesday
night (Angelo) and the league’s top scorer (Taylor
Dorsey), who Tarleton held to just two points.
Johna McClelland, Eastern New Mexico
University, led a superlative defensive effort by the
Greyhounds last week, which limited the opposition
to an average of 67.3 points and a .358 shooting
percentage over three games. Her seven blocked
shots and 19 defensive rebounds limited offensive
opportunities for the three LSC opponents, while her
14 offensive boards increased ENMU’s possession
time. McClelland had four blocks and a pair of steals
against Cameron, in addition to 14 points. She also
rejected three shots against the Pioneers.
Amari Jones, Texas A&M University - Commerce,
continued to be a big presence on the court in the
1-1 LSC opening weekend. Jones, the LSC’s leading
rebounder, paced the Lions in rebounding, steals,
and blocks. Her best performance came against
Texas A&M-Kingsville where Jones recorded her third
double-double this season after scoring 15 points and
grabbing 11 boards. In that game, she also recorded
three blocks, three steals, and shot 50 percent from
the floor as well as 75 percent from the stripe.
