The document outlines three long-term SMART targets for improving skills in acting, dancing, and singing. For acting, the target is to improve characterization through facial expressions, physicality, and understanding the character. For dancing, the target is to improve projection and energy to fully embody the character. For singing, the target is to improve vocal projection to be heard in solos and ensembles. Short-term goals and feedback mechanisms like self-evaluation are outlined to work towards the long-term targets.
1. LONG TERM TAREGTS
Look at your initial skills audit and set yourself a long term SMART target for acting, dancing,
singing and one other from the initial skills audit sub headings.
SMART TARGETS - Long Term target no. 1 ON ACTING SKILLS
Specific EXACTLY what is it
you want to achieve
(state: which, who,
what, where, when,
why,)
I would like to improve on my characterisation
when performing as I still need this to ensure I
progress further within acting. To improve on
my characterisation skills I need to improve on
my facial expressions more than I have already,
first facial expressions this will help me to
portray the character. Not only that but I will
also work on my physicality to portray the
character I will do this by working on my stance
and gestures which are necessary to duplicate
my character. Improving on my physicality along
with other factors of characterisation will allow
the audience to have a better understanding of
the role I am playing. Characterisation is
important when performing as your character
needs to be believable for the audience to have
a good understanding of the performance while
feeling engaged with the characters and feel
part of the performance.
Measurable How will you
demonstrate that
your target has been
met?
I will measure this by recording myself every
time we do a rehearsal and watch it back and
asses myself to see what improvements need to
be made and what I am getting better on. I will
also ask peers for feedback to ensure I
understand what my strengths and weaknesses
were during the rehearsal. I will also
communicate with teachers to give me feedback
to ensure I know what I have improved on
within a couple rehearsals and what I still need
to continue working on outside of rehearsals.
Achievable How will you ensure
this is in your ability?
Are there specific
resources that can
This will be achievable by practicing outside of
rehearsals, I will focus on different ways to
portray a variety of characters. I will use a mirror
to help me improve on my facial expressions, I
2. assist you? Can it be
done at all?
will also video myself to enable me to watch the
performance back so that I can evaluate myself.
This will allow me to identify my strengths and
weaknesses.
Realistic It should be
challenging but
realistic. Why/how is
it realistic?
This is a realistic target because I will use a
variety of techniques to help me improve on my
characterisation. I will set myself smaller short
term targets within this long term target for
example each week I will set myself a new
weakness to improve on such as accent to help
me portray my characterisation or my facial
expressions.
Time frame Clearly specifies
target dates, review
dates. It will give a
feasible deadline and
a reason.
I will set myself until the February showcase to
improve on my characterisation as I need to
portray the character Frenchy within Grease
who is an over exaggerated American teen.
By the next showcase I will be able to
characterise all works I am involved in while I
am learning the dialogue, rather than starting to
look at how to portray my character after I’ve
memorised the dialogue. Being able to
characterise the work as I go along will make it
easier as I won’t need to go back and keep
changing elements of the piece to suit my
character and dialogue.
Review of this SMART target
My characterisation has improved dramatically since the beginning of this year, helped by
setting myself shorter SMART targets within this overall Long term target. I set myself
deadlines in order to achieve them efficiently, such as working specifically on my facial
expressions to help portray my character as Frenchy within our Grease performance. I
achieved this target by the February showcase, I was able to bring my character alive and
portray my character correctly. I feel this has made a stronger actress as I can now portray
characters in an effective way and it also enabled the audience to engage fully within my
performance as I learnt how to stay in character throughout the entirety of Grease through all
art forms. I studied various actresses from the internet and ensured I kept optimistic facial
expressions, continually smiling and generally being a ‘nice’ person.
SMART TARGETS - Long Term target 2 ON DANCE SKILLS
3. Specific EXACTLY what is it you
want to achieve (state:
which, who, what,
where, when, why,)
I will improve on my projection and energy
when dancing as I look unconfident with the
choreography due to my lack of projection,
however I am know and am confident with all
choreography set. I need to also use more
characterisation within dance such as in our
Grease repertoire I need to portray my role as
Frenchy throughout giving it a sense of an
energetic American teen.
Measurable How will you
demonstrate that your
target has been met?
I will measure this by recording myself within
all rehearsals to understand which sections of
the dance I need to improve my
characterisation the most. Once I have
identified which parts need the most work I
will make sure I know the choreography well
and keep running it with the music trying new
techniques to help portray my character while
dancing. To ensure I improve, I will record
every rehearsal and also extra individual
practice at home, this will allow me to know
where I lack characterisation, energy and facial
expressions.
Achievable How will you ensure
this is in your ability?
Are there specific
resources that can
assist you? Can it be
done at all?
This will be achievable by practicing regularly
and repeating sections within in the dance
where I am unsure of what characterisation is
needed. Once I have identified my where I
struggle the most with my characterisation I
can use a mirror to practice a variety of facial
expressions needed at certain points within
the dance. I could also video myself practicing
different facial expressions and levels of
projection to allow myself to evaluate my
performance.
Realistic It should be
challenging but
realistic. Why/how is it
realistic?
This is a realistic target because I will challenge
myself by setting myself small targets within
this long term target such as learning a small
section of the dance at a time adding suitable
facial expressions. Once I have done this I will
4. record myself to ensure what else I need to
improve on before going onto the next section
of choreography. I will continue doing this for
the whole dance to ensure I know exactly what
characterisation is needed throughout the d.
This is also realistic as I can set myself small
targets throughout the week outside of
rehearsals to continue working on my
characterisation.
Time frame Clearly specifies target
dates, review dates. It
will give a feasible
deadline and a reason.
I will improve characterisation and energy
when performing before the February
showcase.
I will complete this target by ensuring I
practice at home to the music and also using
other resources to help me understand what
further improvements need to be made. I will
also ask others within the ensemble for help if
I am struggling with the piece as their
knowledge of their own characters will help
give constructive feedback. I will also conduct
extra rehearsals as an ensemble to ensure that
we are all working with the same level of
energy and characterisation.
Review of this SMART target
I have achieved this long term target by embedding myself within the style of dance when
performing and also projected my character well throughout Grease when dancing.
I used the correct amount of energy throughout Grease as I had to portray an exaggerated
American teen. When performing the jive within Grease I used high amounts of energy in
order to perform the style effectively in a precise manner, the jive is very upbeat so it was
important to interpret the jive with enthusiasm. Not only that but I had to continue portraying
my character throughout Grease which means my long term target on projection when
dancing was important as I had to project character while dancing.
I believe this has made me a better dancer as I can now change the way I project emotion and I
can now focus on other elements on how to make me a better dancer.
SMART TARGETS - Long Term target 3 ON SINGING SKILLS
5. Specific EXACTLY what is it you
want to achieve (state:
which, who, what,
where, when, why,)
I need to improve on projection when singing to
ensure that I can be heard throughout a
performance within both a solo and ensemble
performances.
I need to improve my projection when singing in an
ensemble so that my harmony doesn’t get drowned
out because I am not projecting my voice enough.
Measurable How will you
demonstrate that your
target has been met?
I will audio record myself now at the beginning of
the target period and again at the end of my target
period and compare the two videos to see how I
have improved. I will measure this by setting myself
a few weeks to work on different techniques to
improve on my projection, I will record myself
during every rehearsal which enables me to watch
myself back to self-evaluate myself. From these
self-evaluations I will have a clear understanding of
what my weakness during the rehearsal was which
allows me to focus extra time on these weaknesses.
I will also show these recordings to peers and
teachers to have extra feedback, I will also ask for
feedback on during rehearsals.
Achievable How will you ensure
this is in your ability?
Are there specific
resources that can
assist you? Can it be
done at all?
To help my projection I will work on breathing
techniques to ensure I know what it feels like to be
singing with the correct capacity of air and correct
way in which I should control my mouth when
singing.
The first exercise I will perform is taking deep
breaths in which will help my lung capacity,
overtime this will improve my projection as I will be
able to apply the right amount of force and breath
into the note. I will breathe in for 4 counts and out
for 4 counts and I will repeat a couple of times.
Then I will breathe in for 4 counts again, and then
breathe out singing R for 8 counts. I will breathe in
for 4 counts and breath out singing R for 16 counts.
I will breathe in for 4 counts and then breathing out
I will sing R for 32 counts. I will also practise
different scales, to help me improve. This will be
achievable by working with Mrs Guy and setting
6. myself reasonable targets with specific goals too.
Setting myself smaller targets within this long term
target will enable me to keep track of my
improvements as during my short term targets I will
audio record myself to ensure I understand what I
have improved on and what I need to continue
improving on to complete this long term target.
I will also be able to work on projection more when
I am confident with the song I am singing and know
the note that I should be singing on.
Realistic It should be
challenging but
realistic. Why/how is it
realistic?
Projection is important because the audience needs
to be able to hear me when I am singing. Projection
is important because no one within the industry
will want a singer who can’t project their voice. This
is a realistic target because I can get feedback from
many people which enables me to continuously
improve as I know what specifically needs working
on next or what still needs improvement.
Time frame Clearly specifies target
dates, review dates. It
will give a feasible
deadline and a reason.
I want to improve on my projection by the February
showcase to ensure the audience can hear the part
within the ensemble. However I would like to fully
have completed this target by the following
showcase. I want to achieve this because I want to
show improvement throughout the course on my
weakest areas within the three art forms.
Projection is a very important skill for me to
improve on as if my harmony/ key can’t be heard
within an ensemble piece then it won’t sound
correct.
Review of this SMART target
My projection when singing has improved slightly during this time period however I haven’t achieved
this long term target as I am unable to project my voice to fill the space of the theatre which means
without a microphone my voice wouldn’t be heard during a performance. To ensure I continue
improving on my projection when singing I will set myself more short term targets to eventually
improve my projection overall. I feel as though this would make me a better performer as I wouldn’t
need to rely on having a microphone when singing and also would give me the necessary skills
needed to have a professional career in musical theatre.
