2. SMART TARGETS - Long Term target no. 1
ON ACTING SKILLS
Specific: I need to improve on my characterisation and facial expressions to withstand Sandy’s young and
naïve attitude throughout my performance. Additionally, I also need to improve on showing relationships
with other characters such as ‘Danny’ because at the moment the relationship seems like unrequited love
not mutual feelings. Overall, I need to keep the energy extremely high throughout the performance to show
the youth of 1950s America.
Measurable: I will measure my facial expressions and characterisation by asking my peers to watch my
performance and comment on whether I sustain the facial expressions to portray Sandy’s innocents and
positivity. I will measure the way I show my relationship to ‘Danny’ by considering my proxemics and facial
expressions towards him. My energy will be measured by recording my performance and watching it back to
see if the performance looks cheesy and over the top which reflects the style and era Grease is set in.
Achievable: This will be achievable by undergoing characterisation activities such as hot seating and role
on the wall. Watching repertoire to understand the amount of energy needed to sustain a character whilst
performing. Additionally carrying out detailed research on Grease and 1950s youth to create a believable
and energetic character.
Realistic: This is a realistic target because I am able to sustain the positive and innocent vibe throughout
the song ‘Summer nights’ therefore I should be able to carry this characterisation through to my dialogue
performance. This will challenge me as I have to multirole, therefore it will show a contrasting character as
Sandy as to my other characters.
Time Frame: I will ensure this target is met by the February showcase, so that I am able to successfully
show through characterisation and proxemics Sandy’s intention throughout the first scene.
3. SMART TARGETS - Long Term target 2 ON
DANCE SKILLS
Specific: I need to improve on my posture throughout every dance within Grease as my shoulders fall
forward, which is not accurate for the character I am playing. Also, I need consider my stylistic
quality of movement and make sure movements are clean and sharp, my alignment on certain dances
also needs to be improved. Finally, I need to be able to show my characterisation of Sandy whilst
dancing as it is important to constantly be in character.
Measurable: I will measure my posture by asking peers to watch and comment on my posture so that I
keep broad shoulders and my head held high. I will measure my stylistic movements and alignment by
booking out the dance studio so I have the mirrors to rehearse with and clean up my alignment and
dances. I will measure my characterisation by recording myself and seeing if I sustain the role
throughout the dance.
Achievable: This will be achievable by continually rehearsing each dance number, so I am able to pick
up the dance routine and successfully make my movements cleaner. The dance studio will definitely
benefit me as I can see each movement I perform and concentrate on certain movements to perfect
them.
Realistic: This is a realistic target because it will challenge me to perfect each dance move whilst
considering posture and characterisation.
Time Frame: I will ensure this target will be met by the February showcase as it will enhance the
performance because the dance will look neat and smooth whilst portraying a believable character.
4. SMART TARGETS - Long Term target 3 ON
SINGING SKILLS
Specific: I need to improve on sustaining higher notes within Summer Nights as I struggle to
reach some of the notes. Also making sure that with You’re the One That I Want my entries
and timing for my backing vocals are accurate and confident. This is because they lack power
and are weak, they need to be stronger so that the audience are able to hear them.
Measurable: I will measure this by warming up my voice before singing Summer Nights so
that my voice is prepared to sing higher notes. I will measure my timing of backing vocals by
asking peers to listen and record my singing to ensure that they are accurate and harmonise
with others.
Achievable: This will be achievable by having singing lessons with my singing director. I will
ensure I use skills such as pulling my stomach in and opening my mouth wide so the higher
notes are able to come out with a pure sound. My projection will help the higher notes by
supporting myself whilst singing.
Realistic: This target will challenge me as I am an alto and usually sing lower notes therefore
singing higher notes will be challenging but achievable through certain skills being applied to
my performance such as projection and supporting myself.
Time Frame: I will ensure these skills will be achieved by the showcase to show my vocal
range has improved and I am able to sing accurate backing vocals.
5. SMART TARGETS - Long Term target 4 ON
Professionalism
Specific: I need to improve on my sympathy and empathy towards others. I take control
within Grease rehearsals as I am passionate about using rehearsal time effectively, however
the other cast members may be able to contribute also. This is important because within this
industry we need to work as a team.
Measurable: I will measure this by giving each company member a chance to speak their
ideas before I try to put mine across without any opinion. Also I will give others a chance to
direct and take lead of rehearsals.
Achievable: This will be achievable by myself taking a step back and encouraging other cast
members to showcase their ideas and directing certain scenes.
Realistic: This is a challenging target because it is something I struggle with as I tend to be a
leader figure. However it is achievable as I like to encourage others to put forward ideas
because I love to perform and for it to be perfect.
Time Frame: I will ensure this skill will be achieved by the showcase as it is professionalism
within a company, it gives each member a chance to have their ideas showcased and seen not
just mine.
