A Comparative Essay On Hope
A Comparative Essay on Hope In Troubled Times and
Summary
Written by Bob Goudswaard, David Van Heemst, and Mark Vander Vennen Hope in Troubled
Times: A New Vision for Confronting Global Crises, is a compelling book that captures the
attention of any reader especially when we live in such troubling times. The Forward was written
by none other than Christian Leader Desmond Tutu who opposed the apartheid in South Africa.
Despite the cheery title this book was no easy read what so ever. The book covered topics cush as
Worldwide Poverty, Environmental Degradation and Widespread Terrorism, just to name a few.
The authors of this book had an interesting approach to laying these topics out, going in to great
detail. Writing from a more realist approach the authors claimed not to be optimist, which was
evident and at times they seemed slightly pessimistic. Throughout the book the authors made
excellent use of many of our cultural problems pointing out their ideological roots. But before they
did that they took to time to explain in great lengths what ideology really is and how it came about.
It is more than just the dictionary definition: the body of doctrine, myth or beliefs that guide an
individual, social movement, institution, class, or large group (Dictionary.com). However, the
explained how good ideas with good intentions and legitimate goals can over time become
ideological without realizing it. Even goal like the systematic social and economic growth,
protection and

Research Paper On Sonic Waves
Whether or not you realize it, there is energy all around us. This energy changes and influences
the way the world works. When someone tells you to think of energy, the first thing that likely
comes to mind is electricity or heat, as that is what we commonly see and hear about. If you are
asked to think of a powerful kind of energy, you may think of radiation or fire, as they can kill
people and destroy forests. Although these may be the most obvious kinds of energy, there is
another kind of energy that can be both more helpful and more dangerous; shock waves. These
waves surround us, yet we have only just began to explore their many uses. Shock waves can be
used by animals and humans for both utility and offense.
Shock waves, also called ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A rumor that almost everyone has heard of or seen at one point is an opera singer breaking glass
with nothing but their voice. Although it seems like an awesome power, it is sadly less than real.
The idea is that the performer would sing at the objects resonant frequency loud enough to shatter
the glass. Resonant frequency is the frequency that an object vibrates at when hit. When a sound at
an object s resonant frequency is played, it causes the object to vibrate. Ideally, the glass would
shatter because it vibrates itself to pieces (Schrock, 2007). In theory it is possible, but a human
cannot create enough volume without machinery to shatter glass unless it is the finest, most fragile
crystal. Normal glass is simply too

The Pros And Cons Of Legal Malpractice Case
It is noted that when a company fails to meet its obligations management, employees, suppliers and
customers, which is open to legal malpractice claims. The defence against malpractice lawsuits can
be costly for companies, and even if they win, your reputation could be damaged. Entrepreneurs
have to understand what actions constitute negligence, criminal sanctions for negligence and how
to protect themselves from malpractice lawsuits . The law defines negligence as the failure of a
person or company to practice the level of care that a rational, sane person had practiced under the
same conditions. When the lack of preparation or foresight leads to damage, the plaintiff may claim
the company was negligent and sue for monetary damages. The harm can come in the form of
physical pain, emotional suffering, economic loss, or a combination of the three . The plaintiffs
must prove five elements to win a malpractice case against a business. Applicants must demonstrate
that the company had a legal obligation to them and breached that duty. They have to prove that the
damage would not have occurred were it not for the actions of the company. Applicants must
demonstrate that the company should have... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Labeling And Deviance Essay
Labeling and Deviance At its core, deviance is a label. Deviance, the breaking of social norms, is
by definition socially constructed. Social norms exist only if society as a whole agrees to
behave as if they do; as a corollary, deviance exists only if these norms are believed firmly
enough to punish a breach. As shown in Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia: The Development of
Deviant Identities, On Being Sane in Insane Places, and The Labeling Hype: Coming of Age in
the Era of Mass Incarceration, the labels assigned to those who exhibit deviant behavior only
reinforce deviance, leading to the development of a master status around the deviant behavior. The
article Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia suggests that even positive labeling can affect deviance, a
unique assertion among the three readings. Most pre anorexics and bulimics display notable
conventionality as model children and felt that perfect or near perfect grades were expected of
them (McLorg... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, the label becomes a self fulfilling prophecy and master status through interactions
with others (Rosenhan 204). It is clear in Rosenhan s experiment that even for the supposedly sane
pseudopatients, behaviors could be perceived as abnormal or deviant. Rosenhan explains this
succinctly as once a person is designated as abnormal, all of his other behaviors and characteristics
are colored by that label (202). This is, essentially, the definition of a master status: one status that
outweighs all others (class lecture, #9). This status is absorbed, and the roles are taken on:
eventually, the patient himself accepts the diagnosis, with all of its surplus meanings and
expectations, and behaves accordingly, and so the patient takes on secondary deviance (Rosenhan

Importance Of Budgeting Is Not Hard Even For Younger Children
Cents and Sensibility
Group 5 : Jasmine, Hayden, Trey
What are the basic steps to managing your money? Everyone needs a plan in saving money,
especially kids. In this paper, we will outline the best money saving concepts to help build a
budget that works. Teaching kids early to work within a budget pays off big for them down the
road. Even when very young, kids are ready for the basic idea in how to save and spend money
and as they get older, if parents include them in their own budget planning it will help their
children develop good money habits from the start. The concept of budgeting is not hard even for
younger children. The hard part building good money habits at an early age. These habits,
especially the bad habits, have had the chance to take root are very hard to break. So how do you
start to manage money at an early age? For beginners, parents need to be role models. When parents
are doing financial planning, they need to let the kids sit in on some of the decision making. This
is called a household spending plan. This plan involves all members of the family. They can help
out by identifying what is important to spend money on. They can watch their parents write down
a list and use this list for decision making process. It will help in determining final goals for the
family and what is important to spend their money on monthly. Everyone in the family needs to be
in agreement in order for the budgeting process to be successful. It is important

Biology Reflection
As the bell rung for the end of first period, I gathered my things and began to walk to my second
period class, Biology. Biology was always to me the hardest subject I had ever dealt with
because there was so much to learn, study, and truly understand. I walked through the door into
the classroom and I ll never forget the words I heard my teacher say that caught me so off guard.
Get out your notes and study because you have a test today , he said. As I heard him finish his
sentence, my eyes widen and I quickly moved towards my seat and began to skim over my notes
as fast as I could. I had completely forgot that I had a test in biology.
While reading over my notes, I kept thinking to myself that I just knew I was going to fail this
test. After a couple of minutes of studying, I heard the teach yell 5 more minutes . I began to
skim even faster over my notes. It felt like time was moving so fast because when I heard my teach
yell times up , it seemed as if only 2 minutes had passed by. He passed out the answer sheet around
the classroom and instructed us to fill out our student ID numbers. I looked over the unfilled
answer sheet and counted the amount of questions. There were 30 questions in total which
frightened me even more because I had to answer 30 questions on information that I barely studied.
Then he handed out the test and I became extremely nervous because not only did I barely study
and there were 30 multiple choice questions, but the classroom was so cold that

The Iran Hostage Crisis
The late 20th century was a very turbulent time in American history. In 1976, Jimmy Carter was
elected to the presidency, and he had many goals to help better America. However, on November
4th, 1979, a group of radical students seized the United States embassy in Tehran, Iran. This
completely altered the course of American history and relations with the Middle East. This crisis
had many impacts on the United States. It caused the Energy Crisis which in turn caused the
Recession of 1979. The IranHostage Crisis also had political consequences for President Carter. It
was a major factor that contributed to him losing the election of 1980 to Ronald Reagan.
Additionally, this crisis led to many instances of racial discrimination toward... Show more content

Carter responded to the seizure of the embassy and the taking of hostages by applying
diplomatic and economic sanctions on Iran. Ten days after the start of the crisis, President
Carter froze about $8 billion of Iranian assets. However, this did not rattle Khomeini, it
empowered him. It was at this point that it was realized that a solution to this crisis would be
harder than anticipated. Ayatollah Khomeini issued a set of demands in exchange for the
hostages. First, the Shah must be returned to Iran to be put on trial. Second, the U.S. needed to
issue an apology for previous American actions, and third the U.S. had to promise not to
interfere in Iranian politics in the future. As expected, Carter did not comply with these
demands. He tried to work out diplomatic negotiations with Iran using a third party, but those
negotiations fell through (The Associated Press). President Carter was criticized heavily for not
doing more to resolve the Hostage Crisis. Since Carter saw that a diplomatic solution was not
going to come soon, he decided that the only way to solve the situation was by force. He
employed a secret operation known as Operation Eagle Claw. The plan was to land helicopters
and planes outside of Tehran, and then they would make their way to the embassy to rescue the
hostages. However, the mission was a complete failure; a dust storm caused a helicopter to crash
into one of the planes, killing eight service members.

Descriptive Writing Of A Lake Research Paper
The sky rumbles with thunder as the charcoal clouds roll over the excessively dark rough
watered lake. The clouds are so thick and dark that only a few flickers of light, from the moon,
shine through. The depth of the lake appears to have no end, as if anything would get lost if
caught in its rough currents. Thick and high grass cover the water s edge. The air becomes thick
and icy, making it hard for anyone to breathe. It is the kind of icy feeling that fills the whole
entire body, consuming every inch of life within. The kind that send chills down spines. There is
the sound of pinging in the distance. In a nearby, unlit parking lot sat an old, rusted black car. Its
edges were worn away, its paint peeling away from the cold metal body beneath.

What Is The Objective Function Of Svtm
. Support Vector Machines: SVM is a state of the art machine learning algorithm which is used in
text analysis. They are universal learners. They exist is various forms linear and non linear. It
uses function called kernel. They are not dependent on the dimensionality of feature space.
Using an appropriate kernel, SVM can be used to learn polynomial classifiers, radial basic
function(RBF) [35]. The goal of SVM is to find the large margin hyperplane that divides two
classes. Equation of hyperplane is wT.x+b where class is yПµ{1, 1} depending on features space
is x. If the data is linearly separable, the optimal hyperplane maximizes the margin between the
positive and negative classes of the training dataset. This line splits the data into... Show more

There are several benefits of SVM High Dimension Input space Since the classifier does not
depend on number of features, SVM can handle high dimension space [35]. More importantly, in
sentiment analysis, many features are available. Document Vector Space Text categorization is
linearly separable [34]. Most document contain few non zero elements. SVM classifiers worked
the best in majority of papers. In this project, SVM classifier with linear kernel is used. 3.3.3
Rule Based: This technique was one of the first few methods used for text classification. Human
created logical rules are applied to categorize the text [39]. Most sentiment analysis use Machine
Learning techniques. Rule based method can detect sentiment polarity. The issue with Rule Based
methods is, it is difficult to update and the rules and the rules may not be able to cover every
scenario [37]. A rule consists of antecedent and its consequent. It has if else relation [40]. For
instance, Antecedent = consequent Antecedent defines the condition of the rule. It can be sequence
of tokens or just a token. Multiple tokens or rules are concatenated by the OR operator ^ . This
token could be word or proper noun. The target term represents terms within the context of the text
such as person, company name, brand name etc. Consequent is the sentiment which could be
positive, negative or neutral. It will be the result of the antecedent. The rule looks like: {happy} =
positive {angry} = negative VADER

Importance of Structure and Culture on Organisational Effectiveness
Introduction
Robbins and Judge define organisational behaviour as a method for understanding individual and
group behaviour to facilitate organisational performance and effectiveness (Robbins and Judge,
2007). Robbins (2003) highlights the importance of managers studying organisational behaviour as
this will help them to develop the people skills needed to deal with employers on a day to day
basis, which is the fundamental aspect of any management role. In fact, organisational behaviour is
of huge concern for anyone who organises or supervises the activities of others. There are several
influences on organisational behaviour, each of which can impact upon the ... Show more content on

Sociology:
Sociology is a social science that seeks to explain human social activity. It focuses on the political,
economic, educational and religious structures within societies and analyses the ways in which they
develop and function. Robbins (2003) points out that sociological research into the development
and functions of work structures within societies, and especially the way these have affected the
behaviour of individuals and groups in these societies, has been extremely important in the
development of organisational behaviour.
Social Psychology:
Social psychology is a subfield of Psychology and Sociology that is interested in how the thoughts,
feelings and behaviour of individuals and social groups are influenced by the presence of others
such as families, work groups, and organisations. Indeed, Robbins (2003) states that many theories
originally developed within Social Psychology have directly influenced the concepts and theories
found in organisational behaviour concerning communication processes, decision making, conflict
management and politics and in turn have led to the development of many techniques used in these
areas.
Other disciplines:
Robbins (2003) highlights the importance of a number of other disciplines in the development of
organisational behaviour.
* Political science in explaining how power struggles between groups within organisations can stem
from variances in performance and agendas.

What Is Social Construction Of Terrorism
Social Construct and Terrorism
Perceptions, beliefs, and ideas are ever changing. It is through social construction that humans have
constructed definitions and accepted understandings out of surrounding concepts, thus allowing
them to make a socially accepted concept that can be utilized as a baseline of understanding. Galbin
(2015) defines social constructionism as, a theory of knowledge of sociology and communication
that examines the development jointly constructed understanding of the world (p. 48). Additionally,
White (2014) points out that social construct is the way people view reality (p. 4), or how things
really are to the human understanding. Social constructions are among all walks of life and are

When defining terrorism, either domestic or international use, it is evident that a social construct
is present. It is difficult to define or categorize the forms of a terrorist act, or what constitutes as
a terrorist act based on what each party agrees to be an actual form of terrorism. These issues
within terrorism and crime emerge due to the vast diversity within the United States and the world.
A law abiding citizen in the United States could easily be breaking many laws in another country
due to the social construct that is present. Or even a belief system or political agenda might be
accepted by one group while considered extremists or terroristic in nature by others. Furthermore,
social constructionism and its role in terrorism and crime are based on who is looking through the
viewfinder at that specific point in time. There is an understanding and belief that there is crime
and terrorism throughout the world, yet specifically pinpointing an underlining understanding of
what terrorism and crime is has not been widely accepted (White, 2014, p. 4). It goes without
saying that perception is based on reality and that everyone has different perceptions, beliefs, and
ideas that each produces a different reality, even when it comes to defining terrorism and

Operation Mincemeat Research Paper
Several years after World War Two, the British government publicly unveiled how they used a
corpse to fool the Germans into believing that the Allies would invade Greece, instead of Sicily.
Dubbed Operation Mincemeat , it became the most successful and influential espionage mission
in World War Two. The mission was critical for reinforcing Hitler s fear of an Allied attack on the
Mediterranean, granted the Allies an easy victory in the capture of Sicily, and ensured the
outcome of the entire war. To begin with, in 1943, Hitler feared an Allied attack on Greece and
Sardinia. So, when he received intel of a top secret Allied plan to invade those very countries, he
immediately transferred the majority of his forces from Sicily to Greece. This... Show more content

To begin with, when the British used Operation Mincemeat to capture Sicily, they also increased
their chances for a successful invasion of Italy. This is because Sicily is a small island, located
just at the bottom of Italy. The capture of Sicily will allow the Allies to march their troops
upward into the heart of Italy, and launch their ships across the Tyrrhenian Sea, near the coast of
Italy. The text states, The island at the toe of Italy s boot commanded the channel linking the
two sides of the Mediterranean, just eighty miles from the Tunisian coast. (Macintyre 85) Sicily
also granted the Allies a chance to invade France, distract German troops on the Eastern front,
force Italy out of the war, and finally break the Pact of Steel , which would greatly increase
Allied morale. The author says, An invasion of Sicily would open the door to Rome, draw
German troops from the eastern front to relieve the Red Army, allow for preparations to invade
France, and perhaps knock a tottering Italy out of the war. Breaking up the Pact of Steel forged in
1939 by Hitler and Mussolini would shatter German morale, Churchill predicted, and might be the
beginning of their doom. (Macintyre 85 86) Secondly, Operation Mincemeat was also a huge
success for the Allies,

Tale Of Two Cities Literary Analysis
In the novel A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens establishes that revenge is sinful by using the
French Revolution s rebel peasants, fire, and water. Dickens discreetly uses fire and water in
several instances to describe the relationship between revenge and anger, and the cycle the two
create. As the years passed in France, the violence the rebels exhibited grew worse and worse. In
such risings of fire and risings of sea the firm earth shaken by the rushes of an angry ocean which
had now no ebb, but was always on the flow, higher and higher, to the terror, and wonder of the
beholders on the shore three years of tempest were consumed, (Dickens 225). Sea, or water,
symbolizes revenge while fire represents vengeance, anger, and hatred.... Show more content on

Doctor Manette is talking to a peasant boy who has been stabbed about his sister, another patient
Manette has just seen, and her recent marriage. The conversation turns into a rant from the boy
about nobles, specifically Monsieur the Marquis. I say, we were so robbed, and hunted, and
were made so poor, that our father told us it was a dreadful thing to bring a child into the world,
and that what we should most pray for was that our women might be barren and our miserable
race die out, I had never before seen the sense of being oppressed, bursting forth like a fire. I had
supposed that it must be latent in the people somewhere; but, I had never seen it break out, until I
saw it in the dying boy, (Dickens 315). Dickens again uses fire to represent contempt and anger,
this time in a more personal example of the dying peasant boy. The Marquis took everything from
this boy: his quality of life, willingness to live, and his life itself. Choosing the word barren casts an
even more negative connotation over the already pessimistic topic of infertility. Also, in most
instances, fathers want nothing more than grandchildren from their sons, but the conditions in
France are so atrocious he would rather his family die out. This demonstrates how desolate and
hopeless France had become for peasants; on the bright side,

Music Programs Throughout The United States
Music programs throughout the United States are making quite the hurrah, and yet seem to never
be heard by the classmates and staff that walk the same halls as them. The lack of appreciation of
the music and arts programs throughout America is astonishing, and heartbreaking to many of the
students, parents, and staff that are involved with them. There are more than a few causes that can
be held responsible, however the main three are a lack of funding, lack of support from
administration and staff, and the lack of equal support amongst students involved in different
activities, such as sports, clubs, and musicprograms, all of which have led to a decrease in student
participation in music. However, there may be a solution in sight, with the help of some creative
thinking on the part of the administration, the support of the staff members, and the
acknowledgment of the student body.
There are many benefits to music. It s a way for students to express themselves, create bonds,
learn life skills, and improve their minds. Studies have shown that music can benefit a student
academically, as well as mentally. Not only that, but if introduced in earlier childhood, music can
actually help a child with their linguistic development. As stated by Laura Lewis Brown in her

sounds and words, music education helps enhance those natural abilities. (1). I have been in band

The Work Of Brameld, Horton, And Freire
Names associated with Social Reconstructionism include, among others, Theodore Brameld,
Myles Horton, Morris R. Mitchel, William O. Stanley, Paulo Freire, Ismail Hakki Tonguch, Neil
Postman, and Charles Weingartner. Each of these educational philosophers have greatly shaped
the reconstruction ideologies; however, for the purpose of this paper, it was considered to
analyze the work of Brameld, Horton, and Freire. Theodore Brameld (1904 1987) is considered
to be the founder of the social reconstruction movement. The Brameld s ideas to understand
human condition were nurtured by thinkers such as Freud and Marx, as well as by sociologists
such as W. L. Warner (Thomas, 1999). Brameld s ideologies were conceived through a
curriculum experiment conducted in a rural high school in Minnesota during 1944 to 1945 (Stone,
1995). In this experiment, called the Floodwood Project, Brameld cooperatively participated with
this high school s students and teachers to answer this question: What kind of a society do we, as
young citizens, want to build for tomorrow . The students, who participated in this study, drew
characteristics of an ideal society by working from their expectations and experiences about what a
good society should provide. Brameld developed during the next two decades the outcomes in sight
of: 1) determine values through an inductive approach, 2) social policy could be understood under
the consensus of the learning group, 3) indoctrinaction could be addressed by

Biological Determinism Vs Differential Socialization
There are two schools of thought involved in the historical debate about gender and its
manifestation in our society: biological determinism and differential socialization (Kimmel, 2013,
p.2). Despite the fact that both schools make reference to gender inequality, it is important to
remark that while for determinists this one is directly linked to people s innate biological traits, for
sociologists, inequality is learned through the process of socialization. On one hand, determinism
sets its foundations in biology and a binary expression of sex (maleand female), and states that men
and women have inherited different capacities and adaptations. Determinists believe that since the
moment people are born, they are predisposed by their genes, hormonal, and physically capacities
to act in the world as either a men or a woman. Therefore, they argue that the inequality, or
superiority of one sex over the other (in this case masculinity superiority), is a key factor (a
necessity) for our society to function properly (Kimmel, 2013). For example, women s... Show more

Adding the social factor as one of the major influences in one s identity and, therefore, it is a form
of gender expression. Thus, individuals are more than the expression of their biological sex,
they are part of groups and these groups exert a great influence in their everyday decisions
(Kimmel, 2013). In this case, gender inequality is learned during the process of socialization. For
instance, we tend to learn how to act (gender roles) from the different norms in society.
Supporting this idea, I noticed how at school, boys and girls tend to be organized in two separate
groups to play sports. This example is what Kimmel (2013) explained an example of how people
learn that men and women are different, and construct in their minds the idea of gender

skinny jeans? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you may have a serious disorder
from love of skinny jeans. Skinny jeans are a form fitting, thigh hugging, narrow legged type of
jeans. Now let s go back time, all the way back to the 1950 s. The term skinny jeans was invented
first in the 1800 s by Levi Strauss. Skinny jeans were another term for a kind of jeans, like Levi s
slim fit jeans. Over 100 years later, the brand Levi the name taken from the real jean inventor
reinvented the skinny jeans in the 1950 s. After the reinvented jeans by Levi, skinny jeans were
really introduced to the world in old movies, usually old Western movies. Actors like Roy
Rogers, the Lone Ranger, Marilyn Monroe, and Zorro wore them in their movies during the 50 s.
Performers were also a part of the skinny jeans history. People like Elvis Presley wore them during
his concerts in the 1950 s.
Quick! Now let s get going to the 1960 s.
During the 60 s, Elvis was still going strong with the skinny jean trend. During this decade, things in
the jean industry were changing. Women started wearing them to show off their curves, pushing
gender roles.
Now we re fast forwarding to the 1970 s.

Female Empowerment in the Color Purple
In The Color Purple, Alice Walker illustrates the lives of a female African American before the Civil
Rights Movement. A novel that describes female empowerment, The Color Purple demonstrates the
domestic violence women faced in the South. Walker tells the story through Celie, a young African
American girl who faces constant hardships until she stands up for herself with the help of her
closest friends other women undergoing the same difficulties. Even though men controlled females
in the South, the author emphasizes the strength of female empowerment because females
struggled to survive during this time. Told through a series of letters to God, Celie shares her story.

female wishes to be more like. Sofia represents the unthinkable in The Color Purple. In this time, no
women could imagine standing up to their husband, but Sofia knows no other way. Sofia
symbolizes everything Celie aspires to be, but just needs the courage to stand up and be that

The Fender Stratocaster has always consisted of a three pick up system to give the guitar a range
of sounds that you do not generally get from other guitars. Pick ups are electro magnets that
have six pole magnets with two plastic pieces fit on each end to hold them together. A thin
copper wire is then spun around all six magnets for an average of seven thousand times. The
more spins a pick up contains, the more output it holds, giving the player more response when
the strings are stricken. The pick ups are white with the magnets staggered and poking through
the pick up cover. Each one is a single coil magnet placed into the pickguard in a certain place or
angle. Wherever the pick up is positioned, will determine the sound it makes. The neck single
coil, being closest to the neck of the guitar, has more bass in its sound due to it being closer to
the center point of where the string spins and vibrates. The middle single coil being a little
further down from the neck, has sound the most reggae players enjoy the most because it has the
perfect balance of bass and treble to get the sound they desire. Last but not least, the bridge pick
up is the brightest sounding magnet in the guitar. It being closer to the bridge, gives it more
twang and bite compared to the neck and middle single coils. This is all made possible by Leo
Fender s Five selector switch which allows you to select each pickup on its own or a blend

Sign Language Analysis
1.Introduction
Language is more than the knowledge and use of words, both in speech and in text; it is a cultural
identity, a signifier of status, a means of personal expression. Language enables people to share
their thoughts and needs, establish a dialogue with each other and work together. Language is not
just confined to the worlds of speech and printed text, there are many ways in which people are
able to communicate such as Australian Sign Language, Braille, cultural skills, customs and art
(Emmitt, Pollock Komesaroff, 2010, p. 52). Aboriginal dreamtime paintings are an example of
language as art, a skill passed down through thousands of generations, with different symbols that
have ascribed meanings and are used in an artwork to tell ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This juxtaposition of cultural identities is especially apparent in schools where children arrive with
their already learned cultural language and are often expected by their educators and peers to learn
and use standard Australian English. In early childhood, language is the primary tool with which
children learn cultural knowledge, norms and skills (Gee, 2011, p. 16), strongly informing their
cultural identity. Children who are bilingual, or multilingual, often demonstrate enhanced language
skills gained from their ability to switch between languages (Adoniou, 2014; Fellowes et al., 2014,
p. 39), but these children are not always understood and supported. When educators dismiss the
languages of students who speak English variants or languages other than English at home, they
risk underestimating and disempowering those students (Adoniou, 2014; Caruso, 1997, p. 93). It is
vital that instead of requiring students to assimilate, to learn and to use the language register of the
school or classroom, educators should be supporting students for whom English is not a first
language, or who speak an English variant (Pandey, 2012, p. 388). Educators should be valuing the
qualities, abilities and strengths these students bring to the classroom (Emmitt et al., 2010, p. 53),
as well as educating their monolingual students about

Speak with an Engineer
When you are planning to make extensive modifications to the structure of your shipping container,
it can jeopardize the integrity of the entire unit. By consulting with a qualified engineer, you can
avoid these risks. It is well worth the investment to pose these questions to an expert beforehand,
rather than having major problems arise down the line that could make then entire structure unsafe
for humans.
Buy Your Containers
Since you have the design figured out, and have the safety of it verified by a professional, you are
ready for the next step, which is to purchase the containers. Depending upon where you purchase
them, this could take a few days or several months.
You should be aware that used containers have held unknown contents that may have seeped
contaminants into the structure. Of course, these are easier to find and are potentially more
affordable than new ones.
You can use the Internet to locate containers that are already available in your area. If possible,
inspect them before purchase. This is especially vital for used containers, which may have suffered
damage during their previous use.

Argumentative Essay On Law School
What do lawyers learn in law school? They learn to win... what they ve got to start thinking is
how do they solve problems. Benjamin Carson Law school can be a painfully long process. For
some, it s worth it. For others, the painfully long process can be stressful and mentally challenging.
Although the path to becoming a lawyer is very demanding, a person can reduce the stress by
studying the positive, negative, and mentally challenging aspects that he or she may face. Some
may worry about the affects of law school, but they need to remember there are a lot of positives
in it. First of all, it all depends on the type of person you are in law school to see if your mental
health will be affected. The Wellness Committee at Indiana Law School is a safe haven for
students suffering from depression, anxiety, extreme stress, or any other types of mental health
issues. So, considering that some law schools have clinics and doctors to help the mentally sick,
people can also seek advice or help off site, or off campus. For instance, the JLAP (Judges and
Lawyers Assistance Program) is not on a specific campus but it is a place where you can seek
assistance. The program will keep all of their patient s problems and concerns confidential so they
need no stress about their peers knowing. (Covington)

chest lifted and my smile bright and beaming like the sun. I continue to perform the choreography,
only making a few minor mistakes along the way. Coming up is the most difficult task of all:
getting up onto my light up platform while tapping. I approach the box from behind, step up onto

Major Themes In The Old Testament
Major Themes: as seen in the Old Testament To better understand the full meaning of this passage it
is essential to look to the Old Testament. Throughout Jesus ministry He draws on symbolism from
the Old Testament to show His connection to the Father. The passages below are closely connected
to Matthew chapter 14. The similarities are important because of the original audience. The apostles
would have been Jewish men, which means they knew their Old Testament fairly well. When Jesus
makes connections He increases His credibility, and secures His label of Emmanuel.

A Series for All Lovers of Fantasy
For centuries, humans have loved stories, particularly ones they can either relate to, or ones that are
plain exciting. A story of adventure, mystery, and the honest against the malevolent... the book
series The Castaways of the Flying Dutchman had all of this. Brian Jacques wrote the series, with
the first book published in 2001 and the last one in 2006, spanning over a three book series. The
first one is the one that named the series, the second book called The Angel s Command, and the
author named the final installment The Voyage of Slaves. The series follows two characters, a

Also, the author based the legend in the story off of a real sailor s tale. As previously stated, the
legend this uses features the ghost ship The Flying Dutchman, a name that people have used
over and over again. Although Jacques changed parts of the legend a bit to fit the series, it
introduces the reader to a whole new world of stories. Adapting a legend adds a whole new depth
to the story, as it makes the narrative so appealing. Personally, I had never heard of this legend
before, but the first novel actually made me want to learn more about that time period and the
legends mariners would tell of the mysteries of the sea. Known for his skill in writing the Redwall
books, Brian Jacques carried this style over into the Castaways series. He uses vivid figurative
language, exquisite vocabulary, exceptional dialogue techniques, and creates memorable characters
all throughout the whole series. In The Angel s Command, the very first sentence of the book
reads, Great and golden, like an enormous, newly minted doubloon, the Caribbean sun presided
over the waterfront. From merely the first sentence, the reader can see how amazing Jacques
writes, using similes and excellent vocabulary. Yet he doesn t write with words that no one can
even read, let alone understand. Jacques does a fine job writing with words that are the slightest bit
complex that it increases the reader s vocabulary, yet they know what they are reading.

Too Much Power In Animal Farm By George Orwell
Four legs good, two legs bad (Orwell 34) the sheep kept shouting whenever someone tried to
question Napoleon. Before any animal could say their point on what they thought, the animals other
than Napoleon were rudely interrupted. Through these outbursts and other schemes Orwell
introduces the idea that power can corrupt those with too much control and he shows it through
Napoleon. During AnimalFarm Napoleon and his side kicks, the other pigs are changing the
commandments and doing whatever they please. Napoleon, and the pigs never follow the rules
instead they change them up. The dogs are the secret police that Napoleon has formed to protect

No animal shall drink alcohol (Orwell 25) was the 5th commandment, but Napoleon didn t let
that stop him. After he got drunk he had Squealer change the 5th commandment to No animal
shall drink to excess (Orwell 109). Having that much power can be used for self interest instead
of thinking about the common good. No man or animal should have that much power or they will
abuse it, just like Napoleon. Napoleon starting to think that the pigs were more superior. Orwell
seemed to be stating that if Napoleon was the only one who knew what was right or true, then
Napoleon could convince the animals that he and the pigs needed more of the resources, like milk
and apples. Simultaneously Napoleon later on state that All animals are equal, but some are more
equal than others (Orwell 134) Napoleon is literally saying all the other animals are less than the
pigs. Because they are using tyranny as their style of government they can say whatever they want
without having to prove it. From the start Napoleon is gaining control by having a better education,
having apples and milk, drinking alcohol, wearing clothes, walking on two legs, and manipulating
the animals to think they are dumb. Power is corrupting the farm and all of the other animals
besides the pigs are losing control. From the start the pigs only did what they wanted to benefit

Professor Manry
Final Paper
12 May 2016 The progression of Female power in patriarchal relationships in 17th and 18th century
Britain
Women in 17th and early 18th Century Britain were unequally treated, oppressed, and often
dumbfounded by their British male counter parts. They went through ridicule and solely
depended on marrying rich to seize their way up the social totem pole. But has time progressed
we see women gain more independence and even power in a patriarchal society. During this time
period poems such as the works of Sonnet 138 by. Shakespeare (1609), John Dryden s Song from a
marriage Г la mode (1673), Aphra Behns The Disappointment (1680), and Jonathan Swifts A ladies
dressing room (1732), Are a few samples of British literary works that hint at either the struggle,
miss treatment, or even the embarrassment between British men and women during the 17th
century, but ultimately we see a progression in woman independence in relationship. The following

relationships in Britain at the time. We see here in a Patriarchal society a male, acknowledging the
fact that he knows his wife is unfaithful to him, is not only calm about it; but says they will stay
together even given the situation. In the Elizabethan era women were known for being severely
punished for adultery. King Henry s wives were even beheaded for doing such. Taking that in
consideration we can see that even the highest class of woman didn t get a pass. Perhaps this poem

Using Plastic Bag Levies On Plastic Bags Essay
In recent time green taxes have been implemented by many governments throughout the world in an
attempt to change consumers behaviour in order to achieve environmental sustainability s. One of
the most successful implementations of a green tax in recent times would be the levies on plastic
bags throughout European in the last decade. This paper will analyse why certain green taxes such
as plastic bag levies are successful compare to other measures such as fuel duties and to what effect
factors such the price elasticityof demand has on consumer behaviour and thus the effectiveness of
such taxes.
Word count 1890
According to the Green Fiscal Commission, green taxes are levies imposed on certain processes
or goods which produce significant amounts of pollution, in order to change the way, the public
consumes these goods. Ever since the introduction of the first green taxes, such as the fuel duty
escalator in the UK right up until the introduction of plastic bag levy, the success of such taxes
in changing behaviour has been debated. (Green Fiscal Commission, 2009). In essence the
success of such taxes in changing consumer behaviour depends on the price elasticity of the good
and the consumers willingness to pay for a good. For a tax to be successful demand must fall by a
lower proportion than the rise in price, which means the tax induced price will increase tax revenue
as well as lessen the environmental impact of the good. (Green Fiscal Commission, 2009).

they had been chosen by God just as the Israelites had. They also believed that they understood
better than anyone what freedom truly meant in both a spiritual and physical sense. The Old
Testament characters that the slaves referred to in their songs experienced deliverance by God.
The slaves believed that the same God that had granted them spiritual freedom would someday
loose the chains of slavery. The wonderful flexibility of the spirituals allowed for that double
meaning of freedom. For example, Frederick Douglass claimed that the line I am bound for
Canaan in one of the songs he frequently sang meant that he was going North, not just that he
would experience the freedom of the promised land in a spiritual sense. The flexibility and
multiplicity of meanings also allowed for slaves to use these sacred songs as secret
communication. Some songs, such as Steal Away to Jesus, were used to call a secret meeting
where the people could worship without the supervision of the whites. Other songs, such as Wade
in the Water served as coded directions for runaway slaves. With the eventual emancipation of the
slaves, religious music of African Americans became prominently

Nursing Career As A Licensed Practical Nurse
Nursing Autobiography I began my nursing career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) when I
graduated from high school. I entered the nursing field at a time that local hospitals were no
longer employing LPN s at the bedside. Therefore, I worked in a nursing home for two years.
This was where I learned how to perfect time management, wound care, and medication
knowledge. In the nursing home, I developed a fondness for the elderly. I worked with men and
woman that entered the nursing home completely oriented, ambulatory, and able to perform
most of their activities of daily living. Then, in a fairly short amount of time I watched them
deteriorate until I held their hand while they passed away. After two years, I was finally allowed
to go to the bedside on a medical surgical unit. As I worked on this unit, I took care of patients
with various surgical issues; learning how low blood pressures and low hemoglobin and
hematocrits correlate; as well as, high temperatures and high white blood cell counts precede the
other. I slowly took classes at the local community college until I received my associate s degree.
Once I received my associate s degree, I changed pace and began working on an intermediate
cardiac unit. This unit allowed me to eventually become a charge nurse, design teaching programs
for new graduates and become intrigued with the heart. I eventually began working in a medical
ICU and then a trauma burn ICU. This is where I developed the appreciation of the lungs

Example Of Colonialism In Viajero
I. Introduction Viajero, a novel written by F. Sionil Jose, is a story of talks about a dreamer s
journey towards knowing and understanding himself. Viajero also tackled the history of the
Philippines and the behavior of Filipinos before the arrival of the Spaniards. The lead character
of Viajero was an orphan named Salvador Badong dela Raza (a Spanish phrase meaning Saviour
of the Race ). He became an orphan when his parent had died from the war. He was found by a
native called Apo Tale and was brought to his house, where his deaf mute daughter, Mayang, was
waiting. There, Badong was being cared of by Mayang. Unfortunately, six men with guns barged in
to their household. He was so afraid of the incident that he immediately ran off to... Show more

Said discusses three main ideas in the decolonizing cultural resistance: (1) the concept of national
language; (2) resistance as an alternative way of conceiving human history; and (3) a noticeable pull
away from separatist nationalism toward a more integrative view of human community and human
liberation (pp. 215 216). Roxas Tope (1998) wrote that the proponents of nationalism in the
Philippines during the 1960s thought that it was necessary to require the writing of Philippine
history by a Filipino and from the point of view of the Filipino, but when these works were
published they became textbooks, the repository of historical truths and canonical interpretations of
the past (p. 24); an act that can be considered as walking the fine line of the concept of Grand
Narrative that both postcolonial and postmodern schools of thought question. In the same line,
Zialcita (2005) questioned the overly nationalistic approach to the (re)writing of history because it
highlights only the Spanish state as the enemy of democrats and nationalists by the late nineteenth
century and leaves out the Spanish state that brought in symbols, values, and an organization whose
unforeseen consequence was an expanded sense of community where notions of democracy and
nationalism germinated (p. 65). Zialcita also observed this need to frame the definition of Filipino

Pavlov was a well known surgeon in Europe. In his early years he wanted to become a priest but
discovered Charles Darwin whom changed his life. With his new calling in science, Pavlov
began to work with animals especially dogs. He was fascinated by dogs and even gave them
names. Johnson states that Pavlov felt the need to save the dogs from being slaughter for foods
or hunted for personal reasons. In his most remarkable experiment, Pavlov used a bell to train
the dogs to salivate. Naturally, dogs salivate when they eat to help them swallow food. This is
known as the unconditioned response because it is happening automatically. A few trials later,
the dog associates the ringing bell with food. This is known as the conditioned stimulus because
the dog finally learned to associate the ring of the bell with food. Unconditioned stimulus
happens when the dog salivates from eating. From now on every time the bell rings, the dog
thought it was going to get food because that is what the dog has become used to. Immediately,
the dog begins salivating by just hearing the ringing bell whether the dog saw any food or not.
This is called a conditioned response, because the dog salivates by learning to associate the bell
ringing with food. Pavlov simply studied reflexes, automatic behavior that is caused by a stimulus
from the environment. According to Johnson, during the experiment Pavlov rarely used the bell.
Later in his life, Pavlov was giving an album with all the photographs of his dogs by his students.
Also in 1935, he was honored with a statue called a monument to a dog. On top of the statue there
was a water fountain which symbolizes the dog

Roanoke Colony Dbq
For hundreds of years the story of The Lost Colony has been told to children for
generations.Contrastly, as time trickles by we find out more information about the Lost Colony .
Most people believe that Roanoke were killed by the Spanish. However, because of recent
discoveries. Roanoke must have been forced to relocate because of a drought in route to Chowan
River and intermarried with Native Americans because of these new revelations.
During, Roanoke and Jamestown there seemed to have been a drought that became problematic to
the colony (Document H). Without, water it becomes difficult to produce crops and have maintain
drinking water. This left Roanoke in a bad predicament so, they had no choice but to relocate. The
tree rings discovered in 1998 provides valid proof that the drought happened from 1587 1589.
John White returned back to Roanoke in 1590 after leaving his daughter, Eleanor Dare, and
granddaughter, Virginia Dare in North Carolina. Accordingly, to White s journal the colony was no
longer present and it seemed that the house has been taken down, no sailing boats, and the words
CROATOAN was engraved in the ground (Document C). Additionally, there were no signs of...

Every Man in this Village is a Liar
Prologue
In this chapter Stack describes the effects of conflict on the lives of both people who have
experienced war and people who have not experienced war. Stack provides an example in the
form of her relative, John a former American marine. John was sent to Beirut to combat the
Hezbollah and whilst fighting there he experienced the true nature of war. He returned later
however he wasn t all right . He committed suicide due to the effects of war and the conflicts that
he experienced. Thus Stack came to the conclusion that after being in a war zone, you could
survive and not survive, both at the same time ; she realises that you can mentally die from war but
physically survive. War places a strain... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She realised that people of any age will do anything to assist what they are fighting for.
Furthermore, Stack lived through a portion of the second Palestinian intifada. During this
struggle countless suicide bombers came by day and Israeli tanks acquired Palestinian land in
the West Bank by night. Stack describes this period of time as complete chaos, where, violence
fed violence. Blood washed blood . Stack knew a Palestinian woman who was a victim of the
brutality during the first intifada. She was tortured during the days of this time period for being
part of an underground Palestinian political movement. Stack s Palestinian friend was tortured for
days, beaten, abused, threatened with rape by a barbaric Israeli interrogator. Although she faced
strong hostility from the interrogator, she also faced kindness in the form of an anonymous Israeli
man who sat with her hour after dark hour and attempted to help her get through the pain. This
shows that an individual can interact with both negative and positive things throughout a conflict.
Stack later faced a conflict when she wrote a feature about how the body parts of suicide bombers
had caused a policy debate in Israel. This feature caused Stack to receive hundreds of hate mails
regarding as to how she humanized [suicide bombers] by writing about them as actual people with
families.

Rate Of Osmosis
As suggested by the graph above and the data obtained through the conduction of the
experiment, an evident correlation between the surface area to volume ration and the rate of
osmosis can be implied. As can be seen from the graph, as the surface area and volume ratio of the
cube is increased, the % change in mass is decreased (as suggested by the % change in mass of 2 x
2 x 2 cube). In a contradicting manner, as the SA: V of the potatocube in decreased, the % change
in mass of the potato cube in increased (as suggested by the % change in mass of 1 x 1 x 1 cube).
This pattern in the data reinforces the hypothesising statement, which stated that if the size of
potato is larger, then the rate of osmosiswould be gradual due to its smaller volume to surface area
ratio, whereas if the size of the potato is smaller, then the rate of osmosis would be faster.
One explanation for the correlation between these variables is that an object with a large SA:V
ratio comprises of a smaller surface for the chemical/substance (salt solution) to move across,
allowing more compounds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The results of these two groups clearly differ from the other 4 groups. To exemplify, the results
for the % change in mass of the groups 1, 2, 3 and 5 range from 6 11% but the results of group 4
and 6 are 34.09 % and 0.99 % respectively. One probable explanation for this discrepancy in the
results is that the groups 4 and 6 may have conducted the experiment incorrectly. Potential factors
that may have caused these inconsistencies in results, include a damaged weighing scale and a
damaged timer, which could ve misled the experimenters of groups 4 and 6 by displaying the
incorrect time. This would mean that the potatoes were kept in the salt solution for more or less
than 20 minutes, which would explain the vast difference in the

situations during the beginning of your life,or before taking the hands of being a great power

what, when they did that and how. Throughout Adolf,Josef, and Benito s Lives to become such a
person that evil does not just come about or randomly, there has to be reasonings why a human
being would be so angry and insane.
Well maybe there is,in the beginnings of their early lives in childhood and early adulthood
events and happenings that made them grow up to be some of the worst people ever in history.
Growing up you watch what other people do and as you see what people do you inherit those
actions as well,so maybe some of these is the reason they were who they were, taking on some
traits that were not that good at all. Perhaps maybe not,or is it that life was not going good so they
took cruel actions out on people that were not guilty. We will now find out who is the most
dangerous human in history. Is it Hitler,Mengele,or Benito.

The Music Video For Worth It By The Artist Fifth Harmony...
In the Western World, men are often viewed as more valuable and capable than their female
counterparts; the girl group Fifth Harmony is fighting back on that view. In early 2015, the all
female group of five young adults released the final single from their debut album (Billboard).
Fifth Harmony had yet to have success in mainstream music and were vying for success on the
charts. The song they released was entitled Worth It and it is a traditionally catchy pop song, but the
complimenting music video is far from traditional. The music video for Worth It by the artist Fifth
Harmony illustrates women in stereotypical male jobs in a purposely shocking way to point out
institutionalized genderdiscrimination.
The video opens with scenes from a large urban city, before flashing to a NASDAQ style stock
board featuring the phrase: Women in power. The stock board appears constantly throughout the
remainder of the video behind the women, as the words and numbers change to include phrases
such as glass ceiling and feminism. The women of Fifth Harmony are first shown in the music
video confidently strutting in business suits and high heels. It should be noted men are in the back
of several frames, keeping the females in the forefront of the video. As the video progresses, there
are scenes depicting men in stereotypical female jobs such as assistant and secretarial positions, and
men working for women in other positions such as drivers appear. One of the most prominent
visuals of

How Did Alexander Graham Bell Contribute To The Discovery...
Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3rd, 1847. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He
went to Edinburgh Royal High School when he was eleven years old. Bell had left school when
he was fifteen, he never actually graduated. He also attended the University of London for
college but his time in college was cut short due to him and his family moving to Canada in the
1870s also causing him to not fully graduate from college as well. They left to Canada because
they had lost two children to tuberculosis already. They thought that the only way they could keep
Bell from getting tuberculosis and losing him to it as well they had to leave their home in England.
When he was younger he was really into learning about the world. This leads him to... Show more

Graham Bell had found a way to send a simple current. He had received a patent for the invention
on March 7th, 1876. Five days after he had found a way to send a simple current through a piece
of wire he had actually found a way to send actual speech. He had talked through a telephone
speaking to his assistance, Thomas A. Watson, in another room. That was the time the now
famous words Mr. Watson, come here. I need you. was said. The most valuable patent that has
ever been issued is actually the patent for the telephone. Bell gets a lot of the credit for inventing
the telephone but there are also a bunch of other people that contributed to the process of
inventing it. Graham Bell was the first to patent the invention of the telephone though. It as a
very confusing thing to deal with. It was a confusing collection of counterclaims and claims. It
was made even more confusing with the lawsuit trying to resolve the patent claims of many
individuals. Bell s grandfather, father, and his brother had all been associated with work on
speech and elocution. Both his wife and his mother were deaf. Therefore, Graham Bell was
engaged in teaching teachers how to instruct deaf people that didn t know how to talk how to
speak, as well as experimenting with Leon Scott photography in recording the vibration of speech
while he was a professor of Vocal Philosopher at Boston University. Also, when he

  • 2. A Comparative Essay On Hope A Comparative Essay on Hope In Troubled Times and Summary Written by Bob Goudswaard, David Van Heemst, and Mark Vander Vennen Hope in Troubled Times: A New Vision for Confronting Global Crises, is a compelling book that captures the attention of any reader especially when we live in such troubling times. The Forward was written by none other than Christian Leader Desmond Tutu who opposed the apartheid in South Africa. Despite the cheery title this book was no easy read what so ever. The book covered topics cush as Worldwide Poverty, Environmental Degradation and Widespread Terrorism, just to name a few. The authors of this book had an interesting approach to laying these topics out, going in to great detail. Writing from a more realist approach the authors claimed not to be optimist, which was evident and at times they seemed slightly pessimistic. Throughout the book the authors made excellent use of many of our cultural problems pointing out their ideological roots. But before they did that they took to time to explain in great lengths what ideology really is and how it came about. It is more than just the dictionary definition: the body of doctrine, myth or beliefs that guide an individual, social movement, institution, class, or large group (Dictionary.com). However, the explained how good ideas with good intentions and legitimate goals can over time become ideological without realizing it. Even goal like the systematic social and economic growth, protection and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Research Paper On Sonic Waves Whether or not you realize it, there is energy all around us. This energy changes and influences the way the world works. When someone tells you to think of energy, the first thing that likely comes to mind is electricity or heat, as that is what we commonly see and hear about. If you are asked to think of a powerful kind of energy, you may think of radiation or fire, as they can kill people and destroy forests. Although these may be the most obvious kinds of energy, there is another kind of energy that can be both more helpful and more dangerous; shock waves. These waves surround us, yet we have only just began to explore their many uses. Shock waves can be used by animals and humans for both utility and offense. Shock waves, also called ... Although it seems like an awesome power, it is sadly less than real. The idea is that the performer would sing at the objects resonant frequency loud enough to shatter the glass. Resonant frequency is the frequency that an object vibrates at when hit. When a sound at an object s resonant frequency is played, it causes the object to vibrate. Ideally, the glass would shatter because it vibrates itself to pieces (Schrock, 2007). In theory it is possible, but a human cannot create enough volume without machinery to shatter glass unless it is the finest, most fragile crystal. Normal glass is simply too ... The Pros And Cons Of Legal Malpractice Case It is noted that when a company fails to meet its obligations management, employees, suppliers and customers, which is open to legal malpractice claims. The defence against malpractice lawsuits can be costly for companies, and even if they win, your reputation could be damaged. Entrepreneurs have to understand what actions constitute negligence, criminal sanctions for negligence and how to protect themselves from malpractice lawsuits . The law defines negligence as the failure of a person or company to practice the level of care that a rational, sane person had practiced under the same conditions. When the lack of preparation or foresight leads to damage, the plaintiff may claim the company was negligent and sue for monetary damages. The harm can come in the form of physical pain, emotional suffering, economic loss, or a combination of the three . The plaintiffs must prove five elements to win a malpractice case against a business. Applicants must demonstrate that the company had a legal obligation to them and breached that duty. They have to prove that the damage would not have occurred were it not for the actions of the company. Applicants must demonstrate that the company should have... • 6. Labeling And Deviance Essay Labeling and Deviance At its core, deviance is a label. Deviance, the breaking of social norms, is by definition socially constructed. Social norms exist only if society as a whole agrees to behave as if they do; as a corollary, deviance exists only if these norms are believed firmly enough to punish a breach. As shown in Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia: The Development of Deviant Identities, On Being Sane in Insane Places, and The Labeling Hype: Coming of Age in the Era of Mass Incarceration, the labels assigned to those who exhibit deviant behavior only reinforce deviance, leading to the development of a master status around the deviant behavior. The article Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia suggests that even positive labeling can affect deviance, a unique assertion among the three readings. Most pre anorexics and bulimics display notable conventionality as model children and felt that perfect or near perfect grades were expected of them (McLorg... It is clear in Rosenhan s experiment that even for the supposedly sane pseudopatients, behaviors could be perceived as abnormal or deviant. Rosenhan explains this succinctly as once a person is designated as abnormal, all of his other behaviors and characteristics are colored by that label (202). This is, essentially, the definition of a master status: one status that outweighs all others (class lecture, #9). This status is absorbed, and the roles are taken on: eventually, the patient himself accepts the diagnosis, with all of its surplus meanings and expectations, and behaves accordingly, and so the patient takes on secondary deviance (Rosenhan ... Biology was always to me the hardest subject I had ever dealt with because there was so much to learn, study, and truly understand. I walked through the door into the classroom and I ll never forget the words I heard my teacher say that caught me so off guard. Get out your notes and study because you have a test today , he said. As I heard him finish his sentence, my eyes widen and I quickly moved towards my seat and began to skim over my notes as fast as I could. I had completely forgot that I had a test in biology. While reading over my notes, I kept thinking to myself that I just knew I was going to fail this test. After a couple of minutes of studying, I heard the teach yell 5 more minutes . I began to skim even faster over my notes. It felt like time was moving so fast because when I heard my teach yell times up , it seemed as if only 2 minutes had passed by. He passed out the answer sheet around the classroom and instructed us to fill out our student ID numbers. I looked over the unfilled answer sheet and counted the amount of questions. There were 30 questions in total which frightened me even more because I had to answer 30 questions on information that I barely studied. Then he handed out the test and I became extremely nervous because not only did I barely study and there were 30 multiple choice questions, but the classroom was so cold that ... However, on November 4th, 1979, a group of radical students seized the United States embassy in Tehran, Iran. This completely altered the course of American history and relations with the Middle East. This crisis had many impacts on the United States. It caused the Energy Crisis which in turn caused the Recession of 1979. The IranHostage Crisis also had political consequences for President Carter. Ten days after the start of the crisis, President Carter froze about $8 billion of Iranian assets. However, this did not rattle Khomeini, it empowered him. It was at this point that it was realized that a solution to this crisis would be harder than anticipated. Ayatollah Khomeini issued a set of demands in exchange for the hostages. First, the Shah must be returned to Iran to be put on trial. Second, the U.S. needed to issue an apology for previous American actions, and third the U.S. had to promise not to interfere in Iranian politics in the future. As expected, Carter did not comply with these demands. He tried to work out diplomatic negotiations with Iran using a third party, but those negotiations fell through (The Associated Press). President Carter was criticized heavily for not doing more to resolve the Hostage Crisis. Since Carter saw that a diplomatic solution was not going to come soon, he decided that the only way to solve the situation was by force. He employed a secret operation known as Operation Eagle Claw. The plan was to land helicopters and planes outside of Tehran, and then they would make their way to the embassy to rescue the hostages. However, the mission was a complete failure; a dust storm caused a helicopter to crash into one of the planes, killing eight service members. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They exist is various forms linear and non linear. It uses function called kernel. They are not dependent on the dimensionality of feature space. Using an appropriate kernel, SVM can be used to learn polynomial classifiers, radial basic function(RBF) [35]. The goal of SVM is to find the large margin hyperplane that divides two classes. Equation of hyperplane is wT.x+b where class is yПµ{1, 1} depending on features space is x. If the data is linearly separable, the optimal hyperplane maximizes the margin between the positive and negative classes of the training dataset. This line splits the data into... SVM classifiers worked the best in majority of papers. In this project, SVM classifier with linear kernel is used. 3.3.3 Rule Based: This technique was one of the first few methods used for text classification. Human created logical rules are applied to categorize the text [39]. Most sentiment analysis use Machine Learning techniques. Rule based method can detect sentiment polarity. The issue with Rule Based methods is, it is difficult to update and the rules and the rules may not be able to cover every scenario [37]. A rule consists of antecedent and its consequent. It has if else relation [40]. For instance, Antecedent = consequent Antecedent defines the condition of the rule. It can be sequence of tokens or just a token. Multiple tokens or rules are concatenated by the OR operator ^ . This token could be word or proper noun. The target term represents terms within the context of the text such as person, company name, brand name etc. Consequent is the sentiment which could be positive, negative or neutral. Importance of Structure and Culture on Organisational Effectiveness Introduction Robbins and Judge define organisational behaviour as a method for understanding individual and group behaviour to facilitate organisational performance and effectiveness (Robbins and Judge, 2007). Robbins (2003) highlights the importance of managers studying organisational behaviour as this will help them to develop the people skills needed to deal with employers on a day to day basis, which is the fundamental aspect of any management role. In fact, organisational behaviour is of huge concern for anyone who organises or supervises the activities of others. (Robbins, 2003) Sociology: Sociology is a social science that seeks to explain human social activity. It focuses on the political, economic, educational and religious structures within societies and analyses the ways in which they develop and function. Robbins (2003) points out that sociological research into the development and functions of work structures within societies, and especially the way these have affected the behaviour of individuals and groups in these societies, has been extremely important in the development of organisational behaviour. Social Psychology: Social psychology is a subfield of Psychology and Sociology that is interested in how the thoughts, feelings and behaviour of individuals and social groups are influenced by the presence of others such as families, work groups, and organisations. Indeed, Robbins (2003) states that many theories originally developed within Social Psychology have directly influenced the concepts and theories found in organisational behaviour concerning communication processes, decision making, conflict management and politics and in turn have led to the development of many techniques used in these areas. Other disciplines: Robbins (2003) highlights the importance of a number of other disciplines in the development of organisational behaviour. * Political science in explaining how power struggles between groups within organisations can stem from variances in performance and agendas.

It is through social construction that humans have constructed definitions and accepted understandings out of surrounding concepts, thus allowing them to make a socially accepted concept that can be utilized as a baseline of understanding. Galbin (2015) defines social constructionism as, a theory of knowledge of sociology and communication that examines the development jointly constructed understanding of the world (p. 48). When defining terrorism, either domestic or international use, it is evident that a social construct is present. It is difficult to define or categorize the forms of a terrorist act, or what constitutes as a terrorist act based on what each party agrees to be an actual form of terrorism. These issues within terrorism and crime emerge due to the vast diversity within the United States and the world. A law abiding citizen in the United States could easily be breaking many laws in another country due to the social construct that is present. Or even a belief system or political agenda might be accepted by one group while considered extremists or terroristic in nature by others. Furthermore, social constructionism and its role in terrorism and crime are based on who is looking through the viewfinder at that specific point in time. There is an understanding and belief that there is crime and terrorism throughout the world, yet specifically pinpointing an underlining understanding of what terrorism and crime is has not been widely accepted (White, 2014, p. 4). The mission was critical for reinforcing Hitler s fear of an Allied attack on the Mediterranean, granted the Allies an easy victory in the capture of Sicily, and ensured the outcome of the entire war. This is because Sicily is a small island, located just at the bottom of Italy. The capture of Sicily will allow the Allies to march their troops upward into the heart of Italy, and launch their ships across the Tyrrhenian Sea, near the coast of Italy. The text states, The island at the toe of Italy s boot commanded the channel linking the two sides of the Mediterranean, just eighty miles from the Tunisian coast. (Macintyre 85) Sicily also granted the Allies a chance to invade France, distract German troops on the Eastern front, force Italy out of the war, and finally break the Pact of Steel , which would greatly increase Allied morale. The author says, An invasion of Sicily would open the door to Rome, draw German troops from the eastern front to relieve the Red Army, allow for preparations to invade France, and perhaps knock a tottering Italy out of the war. Dickens discreetly uses fire and water in several instances to describe the relationship between revenge and anger, and the cycle the two create. As the years passed in France, the violence the rebels exhibited grew worse and worse. In such risings of fire and risings of sea the firm earth shaken by the rushes of an angry ocean which had now no ebb, but was always on the flow, higher and higher, to the terror, and wonder of the beholders on the shore three years of tempest were consumed, (Dickens 225). Doctor Manette is talking to a peasant boy who has been stabbed about his sister, another patient Manette has just seen, and her recent marriage. The conversation turns into a rant from the boy about nobles, specifically Monsieur the Marquis. I say, we were so robbed, and hunted, and were made so poor, that our father told us it was a dreadful thing to bring a child into the world, and that what we should most pray for was that our women might be barren and our miserable race die out, I had never before seen the sense of being oppressed, bursting forth like a fire. I had supposed that it must be latent in the people somewhere; but, I had never seen it break out, until I saw it in the dying boy, (Dickens 315). Dickens again uses fire to represent contempt and anger, this time in a more personal example of the dying peasant boy. The Marquis took everything from this boy: his quality of life, willingness to live, and his life itself. Choosing the word barren casts an even more negative connotation over the already pessimistic topic of infertility. Also, in most instances, fathers want nothing more than grandchildren from their sons, but the conditions in France are so atrocious he would rather his family die out. This demonstrates how desolate and hopeless France had become for peasants; on the bright side, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 21. Music Programs Throughout The United States Music programs throughout the United States are making quite the hurrah, and yet seem to never be heard by the classmates and staff that walk the same halls as them. The lack of appreciation of the music and arts programs throughout America is astonishing, and heartbreaking to many of the students, parents, and staff that are involved with them. There are more than a few causes that can be held responsible, however the main three are a lack of funding, lack of support from administration and staff, and the lack of equal support amongst students involved in different activities, such as sports, clubs, and musicprograms, all of which have led to a decrease in student participation in music. However, there may be a solution in sight, with the help of some creative thinking on the part of the administration, the support of the staff members, and the acknowledgment of the student body. There are many benefits to music. It s a way for students to express themselves, create bonds, learn life skills, and improve their minds. Studies have shown that music can benefit a student academically, as well as mentally. Not only that, but if introduced in earlier childhood, music can actually help a child with their linguistic development. As stated by Laura Lewis Brown in her article The Benefits of Music Education, While children come into the world ready to decode sounds and words, music education helps enhance those natural abilities. Stanley, Paulo Freire, Ismail Hakki Tonguch, Neil Postman, and Charles Weingartner. Each of these educational philosophers have greatly shaped the reconstruction ideologies; however, for the purpose of this paper, it was considered to analyze the work of Brameld, Horton, and Freire. Theodore Brameld (1904 1987) is considered to be the founder of the social reconstruction movement. The Brameld s ideas to understand human condition were nurtured by thinkers such as Freud and Marx, as well as by sociologists such as W. L. Warner (Thomas, 1999). Brameld s ideologies were conceived through a curriculum experiment conducted in a rural high school in Minnesota during 1944 to 1945 (Stone, 1995). In this experiment, called the Floodwood Project, Brameld cooperatively participated with this high school s students and teachers to answer this question: What kind of a society do we, as young citizens, want to build for tomorrow . The students, who participated in this study, drew characteristics of an ideal society by working from their expectations and experiences about what a good society should provide. Brameld developed during the next two decades the outcomes in sight of: 1) determine values through an inductive approach, 2) social policy could be understood under the consensus of the learning group, 3) indoctrinaction could be addressed by ... • 23. Biological Determinism Vs Differential Socialization There are two schools of thought involved in the historical debate about gender and its manifestation in our society: biological determinism and differential socialization (Kimmel, 2013, p.2). Despite the fact that both schools make reference to gender inequality, it is important to remark that while for determinists this one is directly linked to people s innate biological traits, for sociologists, inequality is learned through the process of socialization. On one hand, determinism sets its foundations in biology and a binary expression of sex (maleand female), and states that men and women have inherited different capacities and adaptations. Determinists believe that since the moment people are born, they are predisposed by their genes, hormonal, and physically capacities to act in the world as either a men or a woman. Therefore, they argue that the inequality, or superiority of one sex over the other (in this case masculinity superiority), is a key factor (a necessity) for our society to function properly (Kimmel, 2013). For example, women s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Adding the social factor as one of the major influences in one s identity and, therefore, it is a form of gender expression. In this case, gender inequality is learned during the process of socialization. For instance, we tend to learn how to act (gender roles) from the different norms in society. Supporting this idea, I noticed how at school, boys and girls tend to be organized in two separate groups to play sports. The Fender Stratocaster has always consisted of a three pick up system to give the guitar a range of sounds that you do not generally get from other guitars. Pick ups are electro magnets that have six pole magnets with two plastic pieces fit on each end to hold them together. A thin copper wire is then spun around all six magnets for an average of seven thousand times. The more spins a pick up contains, the more output it holds, giving the player more response when the strings are stricken. The pick ups are white with the magnets staggered and poking through the pick up cover. Each one is a single coil magnet placed into the pickguard in a certain place or angle. Wherever the pick up is positioned, will determine the sound it makes. The neck single coil, being closest to the neck of the guitar, has more bass in its sound due to it being closer to the center point of where the string spins and vibrates. The middle single coil being a little further down from the neck, has sound the most reggae players enjoy the most because it has the perfect balance of bass and treble to get the sound they desire. Last but not least, the bridge pick up is the brightest sounding magnet in the guitar. It being closer to the bridge, gives it more twang and bite compared to the neck and middle single coils. Sign Language Analysis 1.Introduction Language is more than the knowledge and use of words, both in speech and in text; it is a cultural identity, a signifier of status, a means of personal expression. Language enables people to share their thoughts and needs, establish a dialogue with each other and work together. Language is not just confined to the worlds of speech and printed text, there are many ways in which people are able to communicate such as Australian Sign Language, Braille, cultural skills, customs and art (Emmitt, Pollock Komesaroff, 2010, p. 52). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This juxtaposition of cultural identities is especially apparent in schools where children arrive with their already learned cultural language and are often expected by their educators and peers to learn and use standard Australian English. In early childhood, language is the primary tool with which children learn cultural knowledge, norms and skills (Gee, 2011, p. 16), strongly informing their cultural identity. Children who are bilingual, or multilingual, often demonstrate enhanced language skills gained from their ability to switch between languages (Adoniou, 2014; Fellowes et al., 2014, p. 39), but these children are not always understood and supported. When educators dismiss the languages of students who speak English variants or languages other than English at home, they risk underestimating and disempowering those students (Adoniou, 2014; Caruso, 1997, p. 93). It is vital that instead of requiring students to assimilate, to learn and to use the language register of the school or classroom, educators should be supporting students for whom English is not a first language, or who speak an English variant (Pandey, 2012, p. 388). Educators should be valuing the qualities, abilities and strengths these students bring to the classroom (Emmitt et al., 2010, p. 53), as well as educating their monolingual students about ... In the poem the man admits that they lie to each other there after he proclaims they both know they are lying, we both flatter ourselves by lying about each other s faults (Sonnet 138), and ultimately states that they are staying together. This introduces an interesting dynamic within male and female relationships in Britain at the time. We see here in a Patriarchal society a male, acknowledging the fact that he knows his wife is unfaithful to him, is not only calm about it; but says they will stay together even given the situation. In the Elizabethan era women were known for being severely punished for adultery. King Henry s wives were even beheaded for doing such. Taking that in consideration we can see that even the highest class of woman didn t get a pass. Perhaps this poem indicates a sort of social evolution for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Using Plastic Bag Levies On Plastic Bags Essay In recent time green taxes have been implemented by many governments throughout the world in an attempt to change consumers behaviour in order to achieve environmental sustainability s. One of the most successful implementations of a green tax in recent times would be the levies on plastic bags throughout European in the last decade. This paper will analyse why certain green taxes such as plastic bag levies are successful compare to other measures such as fuel duties and to what effect factors such the price elasticityof demand has on consumer behaviour and thus the effectiveness of such taxes. Word count 1890 According to the Green Fiscal Commission, green taxes are levies imposed on certain processes or goods which produce significant amounts of pollution, in order to change the way, the public consumes these goods. Ever since the introduction of the first green taxes, such as the fuel duty escalator in the UK right up until the introduction of plastic bag levy, the success of such taxes in changing behaviour has been debated. (Green Fiscal Commission, 2009). In essence the success of such taxes in changing consumer behaviour depends on the price elasticity of the good and the consumers willingness to pay for a good. For a tax to be successful demand must fall by a lower proportion than the rise in price, which means the tax induced price will increase tax revenue as well as lessen the environmental impact of the good. The most pervasive image in the spirituals is that of the chosen people for the slaves believed that they had been chosen by God just as the Israelites had. They also believed that they understood better than anyone what freedom truly meant in both a spiritual and physical sense. The Old Testament characters that the slaves referred to in their songs experienced deliverance by God. The slaves believed that the same God that had granted them spiritual freedom would someday loose the chains of slavery. The wonderful flexibility of the spirituals allowed for that double meaning of freedom. For example, Frederick Douglass claimed that the line I am bound for Canaan in one of the songs he frequently sang meant that he was going North, not just that he would experience the freedom of the promised land in a spiritual sense. The flexibility and multiplicity of meanings also allowed for slaves to use these sacred songs as secret communication. Some songs, such as Steal Away to Jesus, were used to call a secret meeting where the people could worship without the supervision of the whites. Other songs, such as Wade in the Water served as coded directions for runaway slaves. With the eventual emancipation of the slaves, religious music of African Americans became prominently ... I entered the nursing field at a time that local hospitals were no longer employing LPN s at the bedside. Therefore, I worked in a nursing home for two years. This was where I learned how to perfect time management, wound care, and medication knowledge. In the nursing home, I developed a fondness for the elderly. I worked with men and woman that entered the nursing home completely oriented, ambulatory, and able to perform most of their activities of daily living. Then, in a fairly short amount of time I watched them deteriorate until I held their hand while they passed away. After two years, I was finally allowed to go to the bedside on a medical surgical unit. As I worked on this unit, I took care of patients with various surgical issues; learning how low blood pressures and low hemoglobin and hematocrits correlate; as well as, high temperatures and high white blood cell counts precede the other. I slowly took classes at the local community college until I received my associate s degree. Once I received my associate s degree, I changed pace and began working on an intermediate cardiac unit. This unit allowed me to eventually become a charge nurse, design teaching programs for new graduates and become intrigued with the heart. I eventually began working in a medical ICU and then a trauma burn ICU. This is where I developed the appreciation of the lungs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Said discusses three main ideas in the decolonizing cultural resistance: (1) the concept of national language; (2) resistance as an alternative way of conceiving human history; and (3) a noticeable pull away from separatist nationalism toward a more integrative view of human community and human liberation (pp. 215 216). Roxas Tope (1998) wrote that the proponents of nationalism in the Philippines during the 1960s thought that it was necessary to require the writing of Philippine history by a Filipino and from the point of view of the Filipino, but when these works were published they became textbooks, the repository of historical truths and canonical interpretations of the past (p. 24); an act that can be considered as walking the fine line of the concept of Grand Narrative that both postcolonial and postmodern schools of thought question. In the same line, Zialcita (2005) questioned the overly nationalistic approach to the (re)writing of history because it highlights only the Spanish state as the enemy of democrats and nationalists by the late nineteenth century and leaves out the Spanish state that brought in symbols, values, and an organization whose unforeseen consequence was an expanded sense of community where notions of democracy and nationalism germinated (p. 65). With his new calling in science, Pavlov began to work with animals especially dogs. He was fascinated by dogs and even gave them names. Johnson states that Pavlov felt the need to save the dogs from being slaughter for foods or hunted for personal reasons. In his most remarkable experiment, Pavlov used a bell to train the dogs to salivate. Naturally, dogs salivate when they eat to help them swallow food. This is known as the unconditioned response because it is happening automatically. A few trials later, the dog associates the ringing bell with food. This is known as the conditioned stimulus because the dog finally learned to associate the ring of the bell with food. Unconditioned stimulus happens when the dog salivates from eating. From now on every time the bell rings, the dog thought it was going to get food because that is what the dog has become used to. Immediately, the dog begins salivating by just hearing the ringing bell whether the dog saw any food or not. This is called a conditioned response, because the dog salivates by learning to associate the bell ringing with food. Pavlov simply studied reflexes, automatic behavior that is caused by a stimulus from the environment. According to Johnson, during the experiment Pavlov rarely used the bell. Later in his life, Pavlov was giving an album with all the photographs of his dogs by his students. Also in 1935, he was honored with a statue called a monument to a dog. On top of the statue there was a water fountain which symbolizes the dog ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rate Of Osmosis As suggested by the graph above and the data obtained through the conduction of the experiment, an evident correlation between the surface area to volume ration and the rate of osmosis can be implied. As can be seen from the graph, as the surface area and volume ratio of the cube is increased, the % change in mass is decreased (as suggested by the % change in mass of 2 x 2 x 2 cube). In a contradicting manner, as the SA: V of the potatocube in decreased, the % change in mass of the potato cube in increased (as suggested by the % change in mass of 1 x 1 x 1 cube). This pattern in the data reinforces the hypothesising statement, which stated that if the size of potato is larger, then the rate of osmosiswould be gradual due to its smaller volume to surface area ratio, whereas if the size of the potato is smaller, then the rate of osmosis would be faster. One explanation for the correlation between these variables is that an object with a large SA:V ratio comprises of a smaller surface for the chemical/substance (salt solution) to move across, allowing more compounds ... One probable explanation for this discrepancy in the results is that the groups 4 and 6 may have conducted the experiment incorrectly. Potential factors that may have caused these inconsistencies in results, include a damaged weighing scale and a damaged timer, which could ve misled the experimenters of groups 4 and 6 by displaying the incorrect time. In the Western World, men are often viewed as more valuable and capable than their female counterparts; the girl group Fifth Harmony is fighting back on that view. In early 2015, the all female group of five young adults released the final single from their debut album (Billboard). Fifth Harmony had yet to have success in mainstream music and were vying for success on the charts. The song they released was entitled Worth It and it is a traditionally catchy pop song, but the complimenting music video is far from traditional. The music video for Worth It by the artist Fifth Harmony illustrates women in stereotypical male jobs in a purposely shocking way to point out institutionalized genderdiscrimination. The video opens with scenes from a large urban city, before flashing to a NASDAQ style stock board featuring the phrase: Women in power. The stock board appears constantly throughout the remainder of the video behind the women, as the words and numbers change to include phrases such as glass ceiling and feminism. The women of Fifth Harmony are first shown in the music video confidently strutting in business suits and high heels. It should be noted men are in the back of several frames, keeping the females in the forefront of the video.
