The document discusses live storage migration in oVirt, which allows moving one or more VM disks from one storage to another without interrupting guest operations. This facilitates storage upgrades and smarter disk provisioning. Live storage migration works by taking a live snapshot of the disk, replicating the changes to a new disk on the target storage, and then completing the migration by switching the disk to the target storage and deleting the snapshot. Future work may integrate live merge to avoid keeping snapshots and allow migrating multiple disks or combining with live VM migration.

Even the best system administrator cannot always avoids any and every disaster that may plague his data center, but he should have a contingency plan to recover from one - and an administrator that manages his virtual data centers with oVirt is of course no different. This session will cover the new features introduced in oVirt 3.5.0 to handle such scenarios and will showcase how stringing together a set of building blocks can produce a well rounded solution for disaster scenarios.

Step by Step - Reusing old features to build new ones

Designing monolithic infrastructures is a common mistake in large projects. However, more often than not, these infrastructures are too generic, make false assumptions or are simply delivered too late for feature developers to use, becoming "white elephants". This presentation is a case study of the work done by my team to deliver Live Merging of Snapshots oVirt from the initial steps in oVirt 3.1.0 to the full delivery in 3.5.0, and how good design can be feature-driven, building infra-structures step by step, while gaining small wins during the process.

DevConf-2018 Gluster storage is integrated with oVirt as file based storage using FUSE, enabling all oVirt features with very little special code. However FUSE is not the most efficient and scalable way to access Gluster storage, resulting in poor virtual machine performance. With newly added native Gluster support a VM can access gluster storage directly in the most efficient way. Decreased storage access latency results in a better IOPS, thus making storage more responsive and improve the VMs performance. Participants will be able to learn more on how file system access works for VMs, review the reason for potential performance issues in hyperconverged setups, and how to improve it.

We are building a high-performance NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) platform using Xen. Unlike the conventional use cases of Xen-based systems, such as data center or public cloud, NFV platforms require low-latency and high-bandwidth I/O for virtual middleboxes to handle small packets efficiently. It is challenging to meet such requirements in virtualization environments because of additional virtualization overhead. We'll discuss a couple of solutions for high-performance packet forwarding, including SR-IOV VF (Virtual Function), shared-memory channels for VM-to-VM communication, resolving the major bottlenecks and latency/realtime issues, taking advantage of the Xen's architecture. We also discuss how the modern hardware-based virtualization features, such as Posted Interrupts, are helpful. Finally we share the best practices when achieving such high-performance systems. The demand for managing a large amount of data in a scalable yet reliable and cost-effective way has became more and more relevant in this day and age. Ceph, a software-defined storage, provides an original solution for this problem and guarantees a resilient and self-healing way for managing large amount of data up to the Exabyte level. In this session I will talk about a new feature introduced in oVirt 3.6 which provides the ability to integrate with Red Hat Ceph storage using Cinder, a storage service used mainly for OpenStack. This integration reveals new opportunities and tools for storage management in a scalable and virtualized way and also opens the door for interesting future integrations with other storage providers. In this session I will describe how oVirt, an open source virtualization management platform, has extended and elevated its storage virtualization management capabilities by integrating with Cinder, a storage service, to manage resources from the Ceph Storage. oVirt 3.6 revolutionize the way it manages virtualized storage to be much more scalable and flexible, and opens the door for future integrations with well known storage providers such as NetApp, EMC, HP and more.

With the advent of cloud architectures, virtualization has become a key mechanism. In clouds, virtual machines (VMs) offer both isolation and flexibility. This is the foundation of cloud elasticity, but it induces fragmentation of the physical resources, including memory. While each VM memory needs evolve during time, existing mechanisms used to dynamically adjust VMs memory are inefficient, and it is currently impossible to take benefit of the unused memory of VMs hosted by another host. This presentation is about Puma, a remote cache mechanism that improves I/O intensive applications performance by providing the ability for a VM to entrust clean page-cache pages to other VMs having unsused memory. By reusing the existing page-cache data structures, Puma is very efficient to reclaim the memory lent to another VM. By being distributed, Puma increases the memory consolidation at the scale of a data center. In our evaluations we show that Puma can significantly boost the performance without impacting potential activity peaks on the lender. Maxime Lorrillere is a PhD student at Pierre and Marie Curie University (UPMC) since September 2012. He works within the REGAL Inria research team at Laboratoire d’Informatique de Paris 6 (LIP6). His Ph.D. is about how to adapting cooperative caches to cloud computing and virtualized environments. He does some teaching at UPMC in operating systems and Linux kernel programming (master level).

In this talk Mike Rapoport describes the userfaultfd mechanisms and their usage for implementation of post-copy migration. Management seems like a simple job - you tell people what to do, they do it, rinse, repeat. For bad managers, it really is this simple. Good managers do things differently. They let team members affect, if not drive, the team's direction. They allow the best ideas to guide the team's activity, no matter who brings them up. They are not intimidated by non-managers displaying leadership qualities, they encourage them. While these sentiments aren't unique to open source, they are the core of open source communities - allowing individuals to exert influence without any official authority. That's why I think working in open source is the best way to learn how to be a good manager, and I'll try to share this concept in my talk.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
