list in order of appearance the four stages of the origin of life and explain what was necessary to
occur in order for life to have evolved in this fashion
Solution
Evolution occurred in four stages:
Stage 1: Initially, it is thought that various small inorganic molecules occurred in the primitive
Earth. Hydrogen, ammonia, methane and water vapor were the main components. These
molecules combined together to form small organic molecules, which included amino acids.
Please note that ultraviolet radiations of the sun aided this process. This phenomenon is known
as Abiogenesis. Abiogenesis was important for the beginning of evolution in successive stages.
If abiogenesis did not occur, complex molecules (which form from small organic molecules) will
never form.
Stage 2: In this stage, the simple organic molecules (amino acids) further accumulated to form
complex and large organic molecules like proteins (polymers). Water, oxygen, ozone and
enzymes evolved into the primitive Earth. This stage was important because, it resulted in the
formation of enzymes, the biological catalysts, without which life of present Earth is impossible.
Stage 3: Polymers interacted together to form aggregates. These were known as proto-bionts.
They had the capability of reproduction. So, abiogenic evolution shifted to biogenic evolution.
Now new organisms/life will generate from pre-existing life. This stage was important because
of the introduction of concept of evolution.
Stage 4: Protobionts generated the ability of reproduction. So, genetic material could be
transferred from one generation of other. This stage was important for variation and evolution.
RNA was originated, and its work into the living systems was well-established in this stage.
