Exploring the future of scholarly publishing of biodiversity data
Little more than decade back biodiversity data publishing was opportunistic and secondary spin-off activity of the biodiversity research and conservation management chain. Today, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility facilitate free and open access to over 420 million primary biodiversity data records contributed by publishers across the globe. This is an outcome of a growing realization that free and open access to biodiversity data is crucial to take informed decisions and actions for sustainable use of biotic resources and conservation of biodiversity areas. In recent past use of biodiversity data in research, conservation and management activities is on rise. However, users often complain about the low degree of ‘fitness-for-use’ of the accessible data. Most of the times potential use of data is hampered because of lack of adequate metadata, that can demonstrate the fintness-for-use of a given dataset.
To overcome this an appropriate incentivisation mechanism is essential, that can provide due credit and acknowledgement to a research groups for their efforts in authoring good metadata. In recent past a concept of ‘scholarly data publishing’ is being talked about where in both data and metadata undergo peer-review similar to other scientific publications. Pensoft publishing has launched a fresh data only journal called ‘Biodiversity Data Journal, and accepts data papers in six of its other journal titles. European aquatic biodiversity community through EU funded project ‘BioFresh’ has engaged with editors of 29 aquatic biodiversity journals to being accepting data papers. GBIF node in Columbia and South Africa are planning to kick start a journal that will publish data papers. Recently, Nature Publishing Group has announced a peer-reviewed data publishing only journal called ‘Scientific Data’. These developments announce the arrival of the new data publishing era ‘Scholarly Data Publishing’. Biodiversity science and biodiversity informatics stands to gain a lot by being on the forefront of this tide.

Over 350 blog posts and 25,000 visitors to the site showed the network was successfully sharing information. The meeting also discussed lessons learned and ways to improve collaboration and systems going forward.

Assessing new media literacies in social work education.
The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between new media literacy (NML) and digital participation among social work educators and students who use information and communication technologies such as social media. The study replicates the validity and reliability of a newly developed assessment tool for self-reported media literacy levels. The hypotheses state: higher levels of NML will predict a higher degree of engagement with media, and that there will be a significant difference in the level of NML between social work students and educators. The methodology for this study utilized a new survey instrument consisting of 12 separate subscales (Literat, 2011) that correspond to the 12 NML skills identified by Jenkins, Clinton, Purushotma, Robison, & Weigel (2009).To assess the psychometric properties of this new assessment tool, factor analysis was performed to assess the reliability of the measure in addition to correlating the scales with several variables that media literacy should predict, such as degree of participation, extent of user engagement with creative multimedia projects and so forth. Comparing results of the participants’ scores assists in drawing conclusions about the research questions and standardizing the instrument. The survey was constructed using the Qualtrics survey software. Each participant that completed the survey was given a score indicating his or her level of New Media Literacy. Participants were evaluated on a range of 0 – 300, which corresponds to one of four categories of New Media Literacy. Data was collected over four months using social work list serves and social media websites. Results indicate students (N=155) NML levels are higher than that of educators (N=120), and students participate more frequently in social media than do educators. This study demonstrates the need to incorporate new media literacy into the social work curriculum to address the changing nature of social work practice.

A pilot project created an online community for practitioners to discuss cases, share evidence, and build research and information literacy skills through supported collaboration.

Digital Media and Emerging
Technologies to the Classroom
Because traditional schools struggle to effec-
tively understand, implement, and sustain digital
learning initiatives, innovating with digital media
in classrooms is a difficult endeavor. Prac-
titioners need examples to better understand
conditions necessary to move forward with
digital media and learning (DML) in schools.
This article provides examples and supports
research proposing that context and culture
matter when innovating in schools. Three class-
room cases using Web 2.0, app development, and
game design are discussed, offering educators a
pathway to consider similar pedagogical and
participatory approaches to foster learning.
Classroom contexts, teachers’ perspectives, dis-
trict supports, technical requirements, and
scalability are highlighted. The examples suggest
innovative DML initiatives can flourish within
schools when participants are mindful of context
and when a participatory culture is supported
(Jenkins, Clinton, Purushotma, Robison, &
Weigel, 2006).
INNOVATION WITH digital media to promotelearning in schools is fraught with challenges.
Prohibitive policies, inadequate infrastructure,
curriculum requirements, and insufficient pro-
fessional development limit teacher and student
digital media and learning (DML) experiences
(Collins & Halverson, 2009). The structure of
schooling with teacher-directed, inflexible blocks
of time runs counter to openly networked,
participatory practices enabled by digital media
(Fahser-Herro & Steinkuehler, 2009). Limited
support and embedded, industrial-age practices
like standardized instruction taught in discrete
chunks of time, common to schools, thwart
innovation and change (Cuban, 2001; Ertmer,
2005; Shaffer, 2006).

these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
