An Investigation of Data Privacy and Utility Using Machine Learning as a Gauge
Kato Mivule is a doctoral candidate at Bowie State University researching data privacy and utility preservation using machine learning classifiers. His talk will discuss investigating the optimal balance between data privacy and user needs using his classification error gauge model, which employs machine learning to measure utility based on classification error. He will also present the SIED framework, which outlines the specifications, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination phases of the data privacy process. The talk will take place on April 10, 2014 from 3:30-4:45 PM in room 210 of the CSB building at Bowie State University.
Studying Social Science Using E Tools
This document summarizes research using digital tools to study social science in South Korea and Taiwan. It describes how e-research allows the automation of research processes and analysis of new data sources like social media. Two case studies are presented: one analyzing politicians' use of the microblogging site Plurk in Taiwan, finding progressive politicians used it more; the other examining the changing network structures of South Korean politicians from Web 1.0 homepages to Web 2.0 blogs to Twitter, finding networks became denser over time. Discovering critical nodes in social networks is crucial for comprehending the structural characteristics, connectivity
and importance of its presence in the network. In this paper,
we focus on detecting vital nodes which are part of multiple
dense sub-graphs and play a major role in connecting other
nodes thereby forming a global network. Here, we analyze the
data of some major data mining conferences to explore if there
exist some nodes which play a major role in submission and
acceptance of paper in those conferences. We try to figure out
the relationship between the Programme Committee members
and the authors and their co-authors. We look for the top authors
of these conferences. Furthermore, we mine the patterns in which
some authors’ and their co-authors’ papers are being accepted.
In order to understand the underlying dynamics of the network
over time we examine how these patterns change periodically and
with what factors. Lastly, we add to this a comparative study
stating the affiliation of authors and examine if local influence of
their ethnicity does exists with respect to continents where these
conferences are taking place.
Computational methods for intelligent matchmaking for knowledge work
This document discusses computational methods for intelligent matchmaking using social media data. It summarizes a case study called CMAD that aimed to identify weak ties from publicly available social media data related to a conference event. The study found it was possible to identify potential weak ties using Twitter data but Facebook data was not useful. Limitations included a small number of survey respondents. Future research opportunities include combining additional data sources and analytics methods like social network analysis to better identify tie strengths and validate results.
Visually Exploring Social Participation in Encyclopedia of Life
This document discusses visually exploring social participation on the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) citizen science platform. It analyzes the conversation network of EOL users over time using dynamic network visualization methods. Mining and Analyzing Academic Social Networks
Academics establish relationships by way of various interactions like jointly authoring a research paper or report, jointly
supervising a thesis, working jointly on a project, etc. Some of these relationships are ubiquitous whereas other are hard to keep track
of. Of all types of possible academic and research collaborations, co-authorship is best documented. In this paper we analyze the coauthorship
based academic social networks of computer science engineering departments of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) as
evidenced from their research publications produced during 2011 and 2015. We use social network analysis metrics to study the
collaboration networks in four leading IITs. From experimental results it can be concluded that IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur have a
close knit collaboration network whereas the collaboration network of IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras is fragmented. However, the
collaboration networks of all the four IITs exhibit similar network properties as expected from any other collaboration network
Information Fusion Methods for Location Data Analysis
This document outlines a thesis on using data fusion methods for location data analysis. The thesis will examine using aggregated call detail records and social media data to detect and describe events in urban areas. It will also analyze re-identifying anonymized call detail records by fusing them with social network data. The document discusses different location data types, outlier detection methods, evaluating event detection precision and recall, and improving results by combining datasets. It also covers calculating user uniqueness from mobility data and the probabilistic approach to re-identification.

DaCENA is a project that extracts factual context from news articles. It structures relevant facts about entities in an article as relationships between semantic entities. The approach involves annotating documents, extracting an RDF graph of semantic associations, and ranking paths in the graph to identify the most relevant. DaCENA aims to provide additional context about subjects in an article to help users interpret news in more detail and verify partial or decontextualized information in the age of information overload from social media.
A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY ON DATA EXTRACTION IN SINA WEIBO
With the rapid growth of users in social networking services, data is generated in thousands of terabytes
every day. Practical frameworks for data extraction from social networking sites have not been well
investigated yet. In this paper, a methodology for data extraction with respect to Sina Weibo is discussed.
In order to design a proper method for data extraction, the properties of complex networks and the
challenges when extracting data from complex networks are discussed first. Then, the reason for choosing
Sina Weibo as the data source is given. After that, the methods for data gathering are introduced and the
techniques for data sampling and data clean-up are discussed. Over 1 million users and hundreds of
millions of social relations between them were extracted from Sina Weibo using the methods proposed in
this paper.
Information Seeking Behaviour in Electronic Environment: Issues and Trends
This document discusses information seeking behavior and the basic elements of information search systems. It covers models of information seeking behavior such as Wilson's 1981 model and Kuhlthau's six stage model. Recent trends in information seeking behavior are also examined, such as the impact of the internet and Google in particular. The document concludes that while technology has greatly affected the information environment, libraries still play an important role by digitizing materials, improving online interfaces, and helping users adapt to changing information needs and resources.

Social networks have ensured the expanding disproportion between the face of WWW stored traditionally in search engine repositories and the actual ever changing face of Web. Exponential growth of web users and the ease with which they can upload contents on web highlights the need of content controls on material published on the web. As definition of search is changing, socially-enhanced interactive search methodologies are the need of the hour. Ranking is pivotal for efficient web search as the search performance mainly depends upon the ranking results. In this paper new integrated ranking model based on fused rank of web object based on popularity factor earned over only valid interlinks from multiple social forums is proposed. This model identifies relationships between web objects in separate social networks based on the object inheritance graph. Experimental study indicates the effectiveness of proposed Fusion based ranking algorithm in terms of better search results.

A metadata scheme of the software-data relationship: A proposal
This document proposes developing a scheme to describe the relationship between research data, software, and methods. It argues that these elements are intertwined and influence each other throughout the research lifecycle. The goal is to increase reproducibility and reuse of digital research objects. To understand these relationships, the project will analyze research papers, data papers, software documentation, and interviews with scientists. An ontology will then be presented to formally represent how data, software, and methods interconnect in scholarly communication.

With the rapid growth of users in social networking services, data is generated in thousands of terabytes
every day. Practical frameworks for data extraction from social networking sites have not been well
investigated yet. In this paper, a methodology for data extraction with respect to Sina Weibo is discussed.
In order to design a proper method for data extraction, the properties of complex networks and the
challenges when extracting data from complex networks are discussed first. Then, the reason for choosing
Sina Weibo as the data source is given. After that, the methods for data gathering are introduced and the
techniques for data sampling and data clean-up are discussed. Over 1 million users and hundreds of
millions of social relations between them were extracted from Sina Weibo using the methods proposed in
this paper.
Information Seeking Behaviour in Electronic Environment: Issues and Trends

Exponential growth of web users and the ease with which they can upload contents on web highlights the need of content controls on material published on the web. As definition of search is changing, socially-enhanced interactive search methodologies are the need of the hour. Ranking is pivotal for efficient web search as the search performance mainly depends upon the ranking results. In this paper new integrated ranking model based on fused rank of web object based on popularity factor earned over only valid interlinks from multiple social forums is proposed. This model identifies relationships between web objects in separate social networks based on the object inheritance graph. Experimental study indicates the effectiveness of proposed Fusion based ranking algorithm in terms of better search results.

The importance of user-developer interactions during the development of an information system has been a long-running theme in information systems research. This research seeks to highlight a gap in the current literature: the contribution of the developer’s formal educational background to the relationship between developers and users. Using an interpretivist epistemology, the researchers employed qualitative interviews to examine how far developers’ perception of the importance of interacting with the user was influenced by their formal education, or the lack thereof. Interviewing both formally and informally trained developers, eleven categories of interest were identified as pertinent to determining the developers’ beliefs about the importance of user interaction. Three of these categories were explored as promising for future research: academic background, work experience, and developer’s access to user knowledge. This research has implications for education of information systems developers as well as for industry interested in hiring software developers.

This document summarizes a study on attitudes and the digital divide. The study examines how attitudes can predict internet usage by analyzing data from a 2007 phone survey in Austria. Big Data in Social Media
By definition, Big Data can simply be termed as voluminous data. In more specific definitions, it can be termed as that which is large, complex and fast and a s a result, is not in a position to be processed using the typical traditional methods of data processing. The volume, variety, velocity, variability and veracity are used in the categorizing of data as big data. With the development in technology, and the continued incorporation of these technological sources into our day to day lives, the collected data through the Internet of Things among other information systems has resulted in big data (Ivanov, 2018). One such areas where Big data is found is in the social media platforms. As opposed to the olden days, currently, more and more people and companies are using social media daily to achieve their specific objectives and goals, it is estimated that social media platforms like Facebook produce data as big as 500+ terabytes in a s ingle day!
Most of these data in the social media are as a result of the videos, photos, messages and comments being shared across the media platforms. Not only do individuals use social media to keep in touch, but companies also use it in a concept called social media marketing. Through the media, and using big data analytics, companies are able to map out consumer behavior through what they like and what they share (Nicora, 2019). They use these platforms to reach their target audiences and at the same time use them to get feedback from their clients. As a result, the amount of data from social media platforms is not only voluminous, it is also heterogenous in the sense that it contains both nominal and numeral values from different places, it is variable in that it has unpredictable flow, it is fast because it is collected in real time. This qualifies the data to be Big Data and requires big data analytics to process.

As crowdsourced user-generated content becomes an important source of data for organizations, a pressing
question is how to ensure that data contributed by ordinary people outside of traditional organizational
boundaries is of suitable quality to be useful for both known and unanticipated purposes. This research
examines the impact of different information quality management strategies, and corresponding data collection
design choices, on key dimensions of information quality in crowdsourced user-generated content. We con-
ceptualize a contributor-centric information quality management approach focusing on instance-based data
collection. We contrast it with the traditional consumer-centric fitness-for-use conceptualization of information
quality that emphasizes class-based data collection. We present laboratory and field experiments conducted
in a citizen science domain that demonstrate trade-offs between the quality dimensions of accuracy, complete-
ness (including discoveries), and precision between the two information management approaches and their
corresponding data collection designs. Specifically, we show that instance-based data collection results in
higher accuracy, dataset completeness, and number of discoveries, but this comes at the expense of lower
precision. We further validate the practical value of the instance-based approach by conducting an appli-
cability check with potential data consumers (scientists, in our context of citizen science). In a follow-up study,
we show, using human experts and supervised machine learning techniques, that substantial precision gains
on instance-based data can be achieved with post-processing. We conclude by discussing the benefits and
limitations of different information quality and data collection design choices for information quality in
crowdsourced user-generated content.

There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.
