Introduction to digital libraries - definitions, examples, concepts and trend...Olaf Janssen
This presentation gives an introduction to digital libraries.
It first explores different defintions of the phrase "Digital Library".
It then looks at 11 real life examples of digital library websites (slides 44-112), including Europeana, Google Books, Flickr the Commons, Delpher, Wikisource, The Memory of the Netherlands and Project Gutenberg. Each of these DLs is assessed against five different criteria (concepts, properties)
- Content/User experience
- Cultural heritage domain (libraries, archives, museums, AV-institutions)
- Controlled / run by
- Content providing parties
- User involvement
Many references are made to Web2.0-concepts from Tim O'Reilly's article http://www.oreilly.com/pub/a/web2/archive/what-is-web-20.html
From these 11x5 = 55 datapoints 6 trend plots are drawn (slides 116-166) to show "what is hot" and "what is not" in the current DL-landscape. Key slide summarizing this = no 168
Finally, some strategies for content & brand distribution of DLs are being discussed (SEO, Wikipedia, social & ego networks) , as well as some financial trends in DLs
This presentation was given by Olaf Janssen (National Library of the Netherlands - KB) as a lecture for students of the master's course "The Library" at Leiden University, most recently on 3-11-2016.
The document discusses digital libraries (DL), defining them as collections of digitized information and objects that offer capabilities beyond traditional libraries. It outlines the agenda which includes definitions of DLs, their objectives and functions. DLs allow capturing, storing, manipulating and distributing information digitally while providing access to resources globally through networking. They have advantages like access to holdings worldwide but also disadvantages such as issues around access, copyright and preserving digital content.
e-Governance is the ICT-enabled route to achieving good governance.
An e-library is a library in which collections are stored in digital formats (as opposed to print, microform, or other media) and accessible by computers. The digital content may be stored locally, or accessed remotely via computer networks.
As a part of my regular academic activities under the course “Globalization and Governance (PA-322)”, I was assigned to plan for making department’s seminar an e-library .
This document contains an e-Library Manifesto which introduces the relevant ‘systems’. It describes the main concepts characterising these systems, i.e., content, user, functionality, quality, policy and architecture. It also describes the reference frameworks needed to clarify the e-Library Reference Architecture.
This e-library will meet the needs and passions of teachers and students and the learning styles of the latter of the department .
The document discusses the options of creating a school digital library as either an intranet or using the internet. An intranet is a privately owned network that is only accessible to those within the school, while the internet allows global access. The main advantages of an intranet are that access is restricted only to the school community and the school has full control over access and content. However, an intranet limits access to only the school and does not allow remote access unless outside the school building. The internet allows broader global access but less control over security and permissions. The document considers the tradeoffs between these two options for delivering an online digital library for a school.

The Role of the Library in a Digital WorldBobbi Newman
The document discusses the role of libraries in a digital world. It notes that the digital divide still exists, with many Americans lacking broadband access. Public libraries help bridge this divide, as over 77 million Americans used a library's computers and internet in 2009. The document also discusses the concept of digital literacy and the skills needed to find, evaluate and communicate information online. It argues that libraries can help develop these 21st century skills in patrons and promote inclusion in a digital society.
This document discusses legacy library systems and the benefits of migrating to a library services platform (LSP). It defines legacy systems as those based on outdated technologies that cannot meet new requirements or allow for growth. Most current library systems fall into this category. An LSP is described as a new approach that delivers all library management, administration, and user services through a single, unified experience using microservices and other modern architectures. Key benefits of an LSP include scalability, interoperability, reduced costs, and enabling innovation to support future library trends.

This document discusses a library's LSTA grant project to bring maker education to its community. It defines makerspaces as places where communities can work on meaningful projects using tools and expertise, learning skills like STEM. The library will offer workshops in 3D design/printing and circuits, as well as visits to other makerspaces, to teach these maker concepts and skills. It provides resources for makers and information on participating in workshops that introduce skills like 3D design basics.
The document summarizes the establishment of a makerspace at UNCG Libraries. It describes the initial plan to purchase a 3D printer in August 2013, but issues led to delays getting it working reliably until December 2013. Usage grew steadily once operational. The document advocates embracing failures as learning opportunities and outlines next steps like workshops and a makerspace conference. It invites collaboration on potential projects between the Libraries grant team and academic departments.
Discover a few quick and easy to use visual tools such as pixlr for quick online image creation and editing and other tools. These tool can also help you develop a more universal design for learning in your classes. Presenters: FTLC Fellows and librarians Beth Filar Williams and Amy Harris Houk and Michelle Folkman, GA in the Digital Media Commons.
Liane Elias of UNCG Libraries presented this workshop for our Tech Tool Thursdays on Nov 7 2013. As social media changes quickly it can be difficult to know what is a fad and what is worth learning and using. Pinterest, one of the newer social media tools, has been gaining in popularity and can be used as a powerful tool in visual learning. It allows you to create visual book, movie and resource lists that can engage students more fully than simple words. This session showcases the basics for using Pinterest as a planning and teaching tool.

This document discusses the goals and functions of records management and university archives. It identifies the goals as identifying permanent records documenting university history, complying with public records laws, and improving efficiency. It describes the functions of a retention schedule as listing records, providing uniform descriptions, outlining retention and disposition instructions, and identifying confidential records. It also discusses the roles and duties of departmental key contacts in coordinating records management.
The document summarizes the history of UNCG, formerly known as the State Normal and Industrial School, North Carolina College for Women, and Woman's College. It provides details about name changes over time, campus locations, student expenses in 1892 and 1983, early administrators and faculty, involvement in World Wars I and II, desegregation efforts starting in 1956, the arrival of male students in 1964, the founding of the Neo Black Society student group in 1967, and the development of African American studies programs. The document summarizes campus life at the State Normal and Industrial College (now UNCG) in 1913. It had 615 students and 60 teaching staff led by President Julius Foust. Students had to follow strict rules and attend mandatory chapel and exercise periods. They could study for a Bachelor of Pedagogy, Arts, Science, Music or Home Economics. Tuition was $195 total per year, including boarding fees. Students participated in extracurricular activities like literary societies and orchestra, while also experiencing the growing women's suffrage movement of that time period.
The document discusses alternative presentation tools beyond PowerPoint. It provides tips for maximizing accessibility and universal design for learning. Several free web-based options are presented, including Google Drive Presentations, Zoho Show, and Prezi. These allow for cloud storage, collaboration, and varied presentation formats. The document also mentions mobile presentation apps and emphasizes choosing tools tailored to specific projects and keeping designs and content simple.
This document provides an overview of assessment for information literacy instruction. It discusses the differences between formative and summative assessment and assessment versus evaluation. Characteristics of good classroom assessment are outlined, including the importance of measurable student learning outcomes. The document then reviews several tools that can be used for assessment, including clickers, polling software, learning management systems, and low-tech options. Examples and tips are provided for creating assessments using these various tools.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
