This document discusses making connections between the classroom and the wider world. It emphasizes that teaching is about people and helping students make meaningful connections to the people around them. This helps students make connections between sound and meaning in language learning. Interacting with other people is highlighted as a key way to learn a language.
29. “Human contact is key to learning a language.”
“Talking to people is key to everything.”
“It’s speaking which gets me excited.”
“My absolute favorite language learning activity

“Interaction with other human beings is the best
way to learn a language.”

Thanks RepThanks KajThanks to OUP team for making this possible and for inviting me backThanksFor me it is wonderful to be back where I started …When I came to Japan my first job was teaching in an eikaiwa. It was great but I had little training and didn’t really know what I was doing. It was stressful. In fact I suffered from hair loss…
I was thrown in at the deep end…but I improved and after a few years, handling young learners became less stressful…My hair even grew back…
Althought some people weren’t very happy about the style. Especially my wife.Actually this was the day I first met Devon Thagard of Super Simple Songs who went on to write many of the songs for Everybody Up so never underestimate the importance of a chance meeting.Through teaching English I was able to become rich and get some very nice clothes and lovely friends
…and I put on weight…SHIAWASEBUTORI. Anyway, the time came for me to go back to my family home
So, after 13 years teaching kids of all ages in Japan, we went back to Ireland
Every day I walk with my dog Frosty on the pier and think about teaching kids. Then I go home to work on courses.I miss teaching every day but come to think of it, the sea is rather like teaching. Some days it is beautiful and calm… and some days…
It’s a bit rough! Anyway - I wonder how many of you have been to Ireland. Next month, a special day for Irish people around the worldDo you know what it is?
St. Patrick – brought Christianity to wild Ireland. St. Patrick’s DayLook at what’s in his hand-Shamrock
St Patrick made a link between something very simple and local and easy to understand, see, feel, touch and something He made a connection - He created a link that helped people to understand something complex and global or even universalThat’s what we have to do as teachers – make connections – build networks – because everything is a network
For example, cell structure
Or the connections in our brain that allow us to learn a laguage-Indeed even the language itself is a series of netwrked links
Indeed even the language itself is a series of networked links
Anyway, enough about myself My grandmother taught me that the most useful thing you could do in conversation was to ask someone “How about you?” Because people love talking about themselves! Are you a teacher? Are you an English teacher? If you had to explain what you do to an alien…What is English? Please discussWhat is a teacher? Please discuss with your partnerWhat does an English teacher do?Allow me to share the following simple definition of what I, you, we all do as language educators
If you are doing your job well - Everything you do should come back to that. All your materials. All your activities. All your curricula and schedules.Everything we do as a language teacher should have that as it’s basis. So what is sound?
Sound is a vibration that propagates as a mechanical wave of pressure and displacement, through some medium (such as air or water). So this is ONE…ONE…ONE
And this is meaning…notice we have no written words or symbols…just sound and meaning
The wonderful thing is that different people in different parts of the worldconvey the same meaning with different patterns of sound.Japanese- Irish - Italian - EnglishThe other wonderful thing is that people all over the world do this - they learn! And people marvel at how well children learn. By the time we meet our students they have usually pretty much mastered their mother language.I know you may think ATARIMAE but it is quite wonderful and to keep that wonder at the magic of sound when you are teaching language is important. Now we can see that groups of words are connected.
Here are the numbers 1-5. Again – see how different they are
And here we see another group of words connected, again by meaning but in a different wayOne Cat etc
So how are we going to make good connections between sound and meaning for kidsOne way is through attractive visuals connected with sound. That is so important with kidsMAKE IT LOOK GOOD
Another way is to engage emotionally. It has been shown that creating an emotional connection forms memories in a stronger way than without emotional connections and that starts with the teacher. That’s why stories are so good. Please now count 1-10 in a happy voice. Sad..Feel the difference that makes And that’s why babies are lucky. They are taught language with the added emotion of LOVE! Oyabaka!Anyway - what I am trying to say is MAKE IT FEEL GOOD and this comes right back to your own positivity.
And how does this look in a lesson …well leading students through a series of structured activities that will build their confidence in those sound/meaning connections and lead to personalisation and production as soon as possible…ion this case The designer who did EUBooks that look like candies!Always ask yourself “What does my lesson look like?”Whatever it looks like it is still a system of helping young people to connect sound and meaning Sometimes simple…
Sometimes it’s more complex. But always behind what we do is always the need to connect sound and meaning. More so we need to connect that meaning to our students. Now I’d like to ask you a question…Do you have a pet? Does it have claws?
LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD, INTERACTIVEVisually and physically InvolvedThis can be as simple as clapping…or you can get more elaborate rhythmsSing the songHow do you feel?Of course I do not just believe that what we do is just about sounds and meaning
So this is the second part of my manifesto
Recently I read an article about 5 polyglots and their advice to people learning languages. What they attributed their success to
Now, of course one of the most important interactions that takes place in a classroom it this one…
Talk about the key relationship
Frame Story
Make it personal Teacher to Student Links Learn about your students

It’s a dream
The relationships between teachers
Sue, Skype and EU as the only course written by dogs! Writing EU we knew that this was an opportunity to make a different type of connection
Connect with other teachersThe best thing that teachers can do to develop is to talk to other teachers.HELP EACH OTHER!!!PLNThere is a final part to my talk…because while it is all about particular people around us, it is also about a bigger dream. A bigger picture. We are engaged in important work
So this is the second part of my manifesto
