Vicki Chan presented on the link between the location of 24-hour fitness gyms and rates of obesity and diabetes in California. The presentation found that areas with fewer 24-hour fitness gyms had higher rates of obesity and diabetes, while areas with more gyms had lower rates. It also found that areas with high gym density had higher median household incomes, while areas with no gyms had lower incomes. The conclusions were that gym availability affects health outcomes and that less affluent areas without gyms have populations at higher risk, suggesting gyms could target locations in those areas.
