Networking for Your Career
Networking is another stepping stone to taking control of your goals for your future. In the modern world, in fact,
networking is becoming more and more important as we are seeing the amazing growth and popularity of many online
networking avenues such as Facebook™, MyspaceTM, Twitter™, and LinkedIn™ to name just a few. Most of us are
becoming quite familiar with social networking; however, the kind of networking that will be especially important for your
future success is professional networking.
When we talk about professional networking, we are talking about the relationships that you are building with people who
can somehow contribute and support your academic and career success. Maybe your current supervisor realizes that you
are taking online classes in order to advance within the company and has supported you in this endeavor. This supervisor
is an important part of your network. Maybe a classmate who is working on a similar degree program has suggested a
class that you should take. This classmate is an important part of your network. There are many different ways to build a
professional network; however, it takes time and ongoing effort, so it would be a good idea to start building or adding to
your own professional network NOW!
Advantages of Professional Networking
• Career Opportunities
Many jobs are now found through professional networking, so it will be important for you to start building a strong network
of friends and colleagues well before you are ready to make a career change or look for a new job. According to the
United States Department of Labor, approximately 70% of all jobs obtained in the country are secured through
networking.
• Advice and Support
2
There are many people out there who have been where you are now. As you add more people to your professional
network, you are also building a strong support base for yourself. It is amazing how many people will be willing to offer
your ideas and insights that will help you to reach your goals.
• Confidence and Trust
As you begin to build a strong network, you are building a foundation for your own success. Your network will consist of
people who support you, people who know what you are capable of, and people you can trust and rely upon.

9. Seven Key Concepts with LinkedIn
•The temporal structure is “Asynchronous communication allows very large groups to sustain
interaction”(BAYM,2010, p.8). LinkedIn can be Synchronous or Asynchronous.
•Although digital media provide fewer social cues, the high professional standard of LinkedIn
makes for community that is inviting and enjoyable.
•Storage- Not all interactions are saved in storage.
•Replicability- Like most media, replicability is highly consequential and on this forum one will be
removed for unprofessional conduct. There are over 300 million accounts that gives one many
opportunities for networking.
•Mobility- It is very versatile with any device
•Reach- Depends on how extensive the relationship grows but the ultimate reach can become
face to face interaction.
•Interactivity- Linked in begins your networking for you by using your contacts from your personal
e-mail accounts, then you begin to meet others on the network. There are webinars, endorsing
others and “inmail” that is specific to LinkedIn users for added interactivity.
10. Benefits

related material.

Editor's Notes
There are tons of social media forums out in the internet. LinkedIn is different because it is a professional network. This professional standard raises the bar as to what type of community will build within this networking forum.
Nancy K. Baym suggested that language dysfunction was on the rise and that in order to be socially accepting one was to use emoticons and improper grammar (Baym, 2010,P. 64). I believe that LinkedIn is a forum that maintains the integrity and appreciation for proper English and professionalism.
Once you have clicked on the website, a new window that looks very similar to the one above will pop up. Make sure to join and sign up as a new user and fill in all the required information to begin a profile.
After you have established your new profile the next time you sign in all you will need is your e-mail and password to sign in. It’s that easy!
Linked in gives one the chance to expose their talents. The layout of their forum is presented in such a way that it can be viewed as appealing, easy to navigate, and exposes the more important aspects in a profile for others to view.
As a new member, it took me a long time to edit and make sure that my new company was going to be perceived the way I wanted it to be seen by other members. I noticed that as I was editing I had a gauge to the right of my computer screen that measured the strength of my profile. It was helpful and although it is a lot of work to build and add to a profile, it feels that it is worth the trouble.
Be sure to know the reason for creating you professional account. It helps LinkedIn know how to find you the rite pool of professionals . The choices are:
Keeping in touch with contacts
Build a professional network
Job searching
Staying up to date
Not sure yet.
Above you will see how LinkedIn will work for a new graduate. It is important than when answering all questions on this forum, you are keeping your purpose in mind.
Now for the fun and time consuming part. You get to show how awesome you are!
It is best if you use an e-mail that has most of your contacts. Personally I created a new google e-mail account that had no contacts because it was new. I realized that this was a problem only because Linked in connects with you contacts within your e-mail.
“Different technological platforms do lend themselves to different sorts of group formations” (Baym, 2010,P. 74).
Here you see the expectations for each member of this community. The expectations above adds to the success of LinkedIn as a professional’s tool.
God used networking and the spread of his Word to build up the His kingdom through His profits and disciples. Networking is an important part of human nature for personal and spiritual growth. Linkedin provides one with professional growth and all should act in good faith when partaking in any social media forums to enhance goodness in our world.
Above you will find the impact that technology can have on communication according to the Seven Key Concepts by Nancy K. Baym. Some or all of these concepts can be found in all virtual communities. LinkedIn happens to encompass all.
Above you will find only a few of the many added benefits to LinkedIn. Copy and paste this link to read on the much more added benefits to this social forum http://socialmediafuze.com/need-linkedin-business/ .
New users will have plenty to learn and it will all be learned in a couple of hours. To fully take advantage of LinkedIn one should devote time to building relationships and networking just as if one were to go to a business expo. Personally, I found that it is difficult to keep up on my profile daily because I spent too much time worrying about using the correct verbiage and creating my image that would stand out from the rest.
