Assignment:
Create a pen drawing demonstrating the visual elements of line, and movement and the design
principles of rhythm, repetition.
Directions:
1.Using an illustration board cutter, cut your illustration board in half to measure 10"x15".
2. Lightly in pencil trace a circular overlapping gesture across the board. It should be interesting
but not too complex.
3. Begin to fill the spaces created by the gesture with lines of alternating rhythm and thickness.
Use both the fine point and chisel tip of your black pen. You may organize the project in many
ways, think about using continuation, radial lines, cross hatching, checkered patterns, or anything
else you imagine. Be sure there is a variety of mark making and that the piece feels rhythmic and
alive with movement.
Student Learning Objectives:
1. Design: Students demonstrate a knowledge of line and line weight, rhythm, gesture, movement
and continuation. The initial gestural line in pencil is a device that creates implied shapes and
movement. Unity is achieved through careful alternations of visual rhythm and line weight, and
the piece is exciting and dynamic because of it's gestural qualities.
Grading Rubric:
CONCEPT (40 pts) : The project makes use lines of various weight plotted in a creative and
non-repetitive way. The image is clear and sharp, the lines implied through continuation are
apparent, and there is a bold precision that is not muddled and vague. The image is exciting and
dynamic without being confused.
PROFESSIONALISM (40pts): The project is neat and precise, there are no blemishes,
scratches or scuffs that distract the viewer. The pen has not bled, and when mistakes they have
been neatly concealed. There are no pencil marks, finger marks, water spots, etc. The black of
the pen is uniformly dark and it does not look like the pen was running out of ink.
ORIGINALITY (20pts) Are the designs innovative and original, or simply rote copies of the
examples given?
