This document provides instructions to analyze images based on their lighting techniques. For each image, students are asked to identify whether the lighting is high key or low key, locate the key lights, filler lights, and back lights, and describe the effects or meanings suggested by the lighting. Examples are given of four images lit with low key lighting, identifying the back lights and/or key lights that create shadows and contrasts suggesting mystery or suspense.

1. TASK: For each image, answer the following questions:
1. What type of lighting is used in each image (High or Low Key)?
2. Where are the KEY LIGHTS, FILLER LIGHTS & BACK LIGHTS in each
image?
3. What effects/meanings does the lighting suggest?

3. In this image, they use low key lighting as it only
shows the key and back lights, the key light is
coming from the lamp as it is the strongest light
closest to the character, the back light is behind
the character as it is reflected in the mirror. This
suggests they are trying to create mystery or
some type of suspense as you can see his
shadow.

4. In this image there is low key lighting as it only
shows a back light which is coming from the lamp
post, this causes the character to stand out more,
and it creates a mysterious image as half of his face
is covered, which may mean he is some type of evil
character.

5. In this image they use a low key lighting, I can tell this
because they only use the back light, which is coming
from the door, which causes the characters to stand out
more and creates shadows on the walls which causes
the setting to look mysterious.

6. In this image they use low key lighting as it only
shows key and back lights. The key light is
coming from the door as it’s the strongest light
that’s closest to the characters, the back light is
the ceiling lamp as it is causing the characters to
stand out, this produces a sharp contrast of light
and dark areas.
