Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, hoping to find a route to India but instead discovering what became known as the Americas. He made several subsequent voyages to the Americas and explored much of the Caribbean and the northern coastline of South America. Alexander Graham Bell was a Scottish-born scientist and inventor who is credited with inventing and patenting the first practical telephone in 1876. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and became a naturalized American citizen. Both men greatly contributed to exploration and invention, with Columbus opening up the Americas to European colonization and Bell facilitating new forms of long-distance communication.
Blade Runner exhibits many post-modern elements through its dark, decaying portrayal of a future Los Angeles filled with references to other films, literature, and brands from the past. The film shows a hyperreal vision of the future that reflects the present-day concerns of the 1980s. While based on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, which explored philosophical questions of humanity, Ridley Scott's film focuses more on creating a unique dystopian vision of the future rather than participating in an artistic movement. Overall, Blade Runner presents a post-modern hyperreality through its setting and references, though it was primarily intended as speculative fiction rather than a strictly post-modern text.
This document provides terminology related to TV drama production and analysis. It defines various camera shots like close-ups, establishing shots, and point-of-view shots. It also covers editing techniques such as cross-cutting, dissolves, and jump cuts. Finally, it lists sound terminology including ambient sound, asynchronous sound, and contrapuntal sound. The document is intended to help students analyze and discuss elements of TV dramas.

Since television’s inception, African-Americans have been woefully underrepresented. Nevertheless, some shows have been able to break through and find a loyal black audience. Several others crossed over and became influential successes with viewers regardless of race. These sitcoms have had a big impact on pop culture and the black community. This list includes some of the most popular and best acclaimed All-Black sitcoms through the course of time, in chronological order, with an emphasis on the 90s-2000s era (the years I grew up in).

The film pitch proposes a crime mystery film titled "Full Stop". The opening sequence aims to create suspense and mystery around the murderer's identity through short clips showing hints but not revealing the murderer's face. Locations like alleys and sketchy rooms are used to set an unsettling tone. Costumes distinguish the wealthy female victim from the poorer male murderer by tattoos of a full stop. The target audience is ages 14-50, and fast editing and close-ups are technical considerations to engage viewers in solving the crime.

This document discusses common storylines, characters, and locations in post-apocalyptic films. A typical storyline involves a group of survivors overcoming the threat that wiped out humanity, often a threat of human origin. Characters often include an afraid character who is saved by a brave one, and an antihero who betrays the group. Locations are usually deserted urban areas which create tension by being shown as desolate rather than busy.
The document summarizes the genre focus, camera shots/angles, editing techniques, style/costume/props, and locations/settings used in the music videos for Kendrick Lamar's "Alright", Jay-Z's "99 Problems", and Drake's "Started From the Bottom". It analyzes how these various filmmaking elements are used to convey different themes and messages - the oppression of minorities in "Alright" and "99 Problems" versus the lavish lifestyle in "Started From the Bottom".
Steve Neale argues that film genres go through a cycle of changes throughout their lifespan. His theoretical cycle includes four stages: (1) form finding itself with groundbreaking films that begin a new genre, (2) classic films that establish codes and conventions, (3) films that push boundaries by tweaking elements or going further, and (4) homage films that reference other famous genre films as a mark of respect. The genre then enters the parody stage that mocks commonly repeated elements before repeating the cycle. The document provides examples for each stage from the slasher genre and the evolution of reggae music to illustrate Neale's theory.
1) Todorov's narrative theory describes narratives moving through five stages from equilibrium to disruption to recognition to attempt to resolve to new equilibrium.
2) Bordwell and Thompson distinguish between fabula (chronological story events) and syuzhet (order and techniques of presentation).
3) Music videos can be categorized as performance clips showing singing/dancing, narrative clips containing visual stories, or art clips with no clear narrative or lip syncing.

The document provides an overview and analysis of the post-apocalyptic film "DNA-pocalypse". It describes the plot involving mandatory government DNA testing leading to the creation of clones to destroy remaining survivors. It then analyzes elements of the film including how it establishes tension through an opening shot of the characters running and non-diegetic music. It also analyzes how the film's cinematography, colors, clothing choices, and icons portray the post-apocalyptic genre in a manner similar to other films in the genre like 28 Days Later and The Hunger Games.
The document provides an overview and analysis of the post-apocalyptic film "DNA-pocalypse". It describes the plot involving a government scheme to take mandatory DNA samples from citizens to create a "perfect population" under total government control. The main characters Boris, Nicola and Jim fight to escape destruction by government clones sent to eliminate survivors. The analysis discusses how the film's opening scene and visual elements establish tension and genre conventions consistent with other post-apocalyptic films through choices like desaturated colors, characters' worn clothing and carried weapons.
This document discusses different types of narrative structures, including circular, episodic, linear, and non-linear. A circular structure is one where the story ends where it began. An episodic structure consists of chapters or stories linked by character, place, or theme. A linear narrative follows a straight path from beginning to end. Finally, a non-linear narrative presents events out of chronological order or through parallel plot lines.
This document provides instructions to analyze images based on their lighting techniques. For each image, students are asked to identify whether the lighting is high key or low key, locate the key lights, filler lights, and back lights, and describe the effects or meanings suggested by the lighting. Examples are given of four images lit with low key lighting, identifying the back lights and/or key lights that create shadows and contrasts suggesting mystery or suspense.
Semiotics is the study of meaning and how it is formed through signs like words, images, and music. It can be used to analyze the symbolic codes in media texts. Examples of semiotics associations include red with danger/love, blue with sadness, and yellow with happiness. Audio-visual media possesses both sound and visual components, such as films, TV, and live performances. Print media refers to paper publications like books, magazines, and newspapers.
The document discusses how positioning of characters and objects within a frame can reveal important details. It notes that positioning can draw attention to key figures and indicate relationships. The document then analyzes 4 images, concluding that in Image 1 the characters seem distant, in Image 2 one person is more prominent than the other, in Image 3 both characters are equally prominent, and in Image 4 one character is clearly central.
Mise-en-scene refers to everything within the frame of a shot that can be used to tell the story, including the five main elements: settings and props, costumes/makeup, facial expressions/body language, lighting/color, and character/object positioning. These elements help establish expectations, provide context about time period and culture, convey characters' feelings and relationships, and highlight important aspects through techniques like lighting, camera angles, and character placement within the frame. Mise-en-scene is a key filmmaking tool used to manipulate audiences and advance the narrative.
This document outlines key concepts in media studies, including media language, ideology and values, genre, representation, audience, institutions, and narrative. It defines each concept, explaining that media language is the code used to convey messages, ideology and values are beliefs held by a group, genre identifies conventions, representation constructs versions of people and events, audience refers to intended consumers, institutions determine constraints and regulation, and narrative explores plot and characters.

2. KYLE COOPER• KYLE COOPER IS AN AMERICAN TITLE SEQUENCE DESIGNER.
• HE WAS BORN ON JULY 1995 IN MASSACHUSETTS WHICH IS WHERE HE STUDIED INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE AT UNIVERSITY
OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST.
• KYLE THEN LATER DECIDED TO STUDY GRAPHIC DESIGN UNDER PAUL RAND WHO WAS A PROFESSOR AT YALE UNIVERSITY,
HE RECEIVED HIS MFA (MASTER OF FINE ARTS) DEGREE FROM THERE IN 1988.
• WHILE KYLE WORKED AS A CREATIVE DIRECTOR AT R/GA IN NEW YORK AND LOS ANGELES, HE CREATED THE TITLE SEQUENCE
FOR 1995 AMERICAN FILM SEVEN WHICH WAS SO DIFFERENT AND UNIQUE FROM THE TITLE SEQUENCES DURING THOSE
TIMES. THIS INSPIRED A LOT OF YOUNGER DESIGNERS.
• KYLE COOPER WENT ON TO MAKE MORE AMAZING TITLE SEQUENCES FOR POPULARMOVIES SUCH AS HOME ALONE (1990),
ZOOLANDER (2001), SPIDER-MAN (2002), SUPERMAN RETURNS (2006) AND MANY OTHERS.
3. QUOTES
‘SOMETIMES MAKING PEOPLELAUGH OR EVEN MAKING THEM SCARED CAN BE ACCOMPLISHES BY A GOOD
OPENING SEQUENCE.’
‘I REMEMBER A TIME AT YALE WHEN MY WORK WAS BEING CRITIQUED BY PAUL RAND. MR. RAND TOLD ME
ONLY TO USE HELVETICA AS A DISPLAY FACE NEVER IN TEXT, THEN HE SQUINTED, LEANED IN, AND WHISPERED
IN MY EAR, ‘’BECAUSE HELVETICA LOOKS LIKE DOGSHIT IN TEXT’’.’
4. THE WALKING DEAD TITLE SEQUENCE
ANALYSIS
THE WALKING DEAD IS A POST-APOCALYPTIC TV SERIES ABOUT THE AFTERMATH OF A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE, THE PROTAGONIST IS
RICK GRIMES WHO IS A SHERIFF WHO WAKES UP AFTER A COMA AND HAS TO SURVIVE BUT MEETS OTHER SURVIVORS ALONG THE
WAY.
THIS SEQUENCE BEGINS WITH NON-DIEGETIC MUSIC WITH A VERY FAST PACE, THEY INTRODUCE THE TV NETWORK AMC WHICH IS A
COMMON CONVENTION OF TITLE SEQUENCES AS THEY USUALLY POINT OUT THE SIGNIFICANT ROLES. IN THE MISE EN SCENE IT SHOWS
PICTURES OF DIFFERENT CHARACTERS WITH THEIR REAL NAMES, AS TITLE SEQUENCES USUALLY MENTION THE CAST, THEY DO IT IN
INTERESTING TECHNIQUES AS FOR THE PROTAGONIST RICK GRIMES PICTURE WHICH IS ON A NEWSPAPER WITH WHAT MAY BE
BLOOD STAINS, YOU CAN SEE THE WORD ‘SHOT’, WHICH GIVES AN ENIGMA AS TO WHO HAD BEEN SHOT, ALSO BY WHAT HE’S WEARING
WE CAN TELL HE MAY BE A POLICE OFFICER. LATER ON IT SHOWS WHAT LOOKS LIKE A STORE THAT IS COMPLETELY DESERTED THERE IS
NOT MUCH FOOD ON THE SHELVES, ON THE FLOOR THERE SEEMS TO BE MOULD, THIS SHOWS THAT IT’S MOST LIKELY BEEN ABANDONED
FOR AWHILE, WHICH GIVES US AN IDEA OF A POST-APOCALYPTIC THEME.
