Structures of an aircraft can be categorised as primary structural components and secondary structure components. Primary structure components are the components which lead to failure of the aircraft if such component is failed during the flight cycle. Renewal interest on the exploitation of flapping flight motions to attain high propulsion efficiency of air vehicles is inspired by the aerodynamics of birds’ and insects’ flights. The flapping characteristics can be majorly used to develop micro aerial vehicles (MAV) as this is a lucrative method to generate lift and thrust simultaneously. In this project, the variation of the flow properties and the thrust generation of an airfoil in a flapping (plunging) motion, is evaluated using both computational and experimental methods. The NACA 2412 airfoil was selected for the study and, the computational method was carried out using an inviscid flow model and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, simultaneously to obtain and compare the variation of properties.
The inviscid model was developed using conformal mapping and potential flow theories, and it is capable of producing results for any arbitrary aerofoil. Steady-state results were compared and validated in both CFD and inviscid flow modelling as the computational framework along with flow visualisation and force sensing as the experimental framework. The validated CFD and inviscid models have been developed to produce a plunging motion to the aerofoil and obtain the variation of drag and lift coefficients with time. The experimental setup was designed to obtain the forces acting on the airfoil, and the flow characteristics were visually observed using a flow visualization technique. The force calculations were done through a developed and optimized load cell arrangement. The developed smoke flow visualisation technique is capable of successfully capturing streamline patterns, flow separation regions. These results were compared along with wake development between computational and experimental models. The Level of agreement and limitations of each method have been discussed in this report.

Four nozzle ring concepts were evaluated in ANSYS Mechanical to find equivalent stress and fatigue life, with all concepts showing stresses within the endurance limit of steel and practically infinite life with a good safety factor.
TK leg replacement
Katie Letourneau presented an analysis and design for replacing corroded support legs on storage tanks. The analysis included sizing the horizontal and vertical members of the new support, connecting the leg to the support, and calculating necessary welds. A foot was added to the bottom of the support and bolted to distribute the load onto the ground. The design was communicated to operations, maintenance, and engineering teams and was successfully implemented with the replaced leg not sagging and no impact to unit operations.
Transient three dimensional cfd modelling of ceilng fan
Ceiling fans are used to get thermal comfort, especially in tropical countries. With the increment of the usage of air conditioners, the emission of CO2 is increased. But ceiling fans are a limited solution, that saves much energy compared to air conditioners. Ceiling fans generate a non-uniform velocity profile, so that, there is a non-uniform thermal environment. That non-uniform environment does not imply lower thermal comfort, that will give enough thermal comfort with low energy cost by air velocity. Hence, there will be difficulties of analysing with simple modelling techniques in that environment. So, to predict the performance of the ceiling fan required more accurate models.
The accurate model of a ceiling fan will generate complex geometry that makes difficulties for the simulation process and requires higher computational power. Because of that, there are several methods used to predict the performance of the ceiling fan using mathematical techniques but that will give an estimated value of properties in the surrounding.

In this project, a portable horizontal tensile testing system involving the use of a specially designed tensile specimen is proposed. The system developed was designed to convert the rotation motion of a ball screw into the linear motion of specimen grips that apply a tensile load to the specimen. The frame contains an aligned linear motion guide for the movement of the specimen grips, ensuring the co-linearity of the travel axes. One side of the specimen is connected to a ball-screw block and the other side is connected to a load-cell (which is static) to detect the load magnitude.

The present research is due to study the performance of
engine-propeller cells to be used in the design of a Micro
Air Vehicle (MAV). MAV design conditions: weight less than 200gr, maximum size 30cm, to fly a distance of 200m, and to be able to carry a camera and chemical sensors.One of the goals of the study is to use commercial parts (engines and propellers) in order to reduce manufacturing cost. The experiments are made in a subsonic open-circuit wind tunnel. The results are the aerodynamic drag coefficient of the propeller-engine cell (engine off), the static thrust test realized with engine on and tunnel off, at different RPM and the dynamic thrust test with engine and tunnel on, at different
RPM and different tunnel flow velocity.

Automatic Pneumatic Double Bumper
The aim is to design and develop a control system based on electronically controlled setup called AUTOMATIC PNEUMATIC DOUBLE BUMPER FOR FOUR WHEELER. This project consists of IR transmitter and Receiver circuit, Control Unit, Pneumatic bumper system. The IR sensor senses the obstacle. If there is any obstacle closer to the vehicle (within 3-4 feet); the control signal is given to the bumper activation system .The pneumatic bumper is used to protect the man and vehicle. This bumper is only activated if the vehicle speed is above 30-40 km per hour. This vehicle speed is sensed by the proximity sensor and this signal is given to the control unit and then the pneumatic bumper will be activated.

The aim is to design and develop a control system based on electronically controlled setup called AUTOMATIC PNEUMATIC DOUBLE BUMPER FOR FOUR WHEELER. This project consists of IR transmitter and Receiver circuit, Control Unit, Pneumatic bumper system. The IR sensor senses the obstacle. If there is any obstacle closer to the vehicle (within 3-4 feet); the control signal is given to the bumper activation system .The pneumatic bumper is used to protect the man and vehicle. This bumper is only activated if the vehicle speed is above 30-40 km per hour. This vehicle speed is sensed by the proximity sensor and this signal is given to the control unit and then the pneumatic bumper will be activated.

Analysis of Lifting Machine
This project report summarizes the design of a transporter machine used to lift heavy machinery between floors. The machine uses pneumatic pistons and chain-driven pulleys. It is divided into 3 subsystems: 1) Pneumatics & Pulley, 2) Mainframe, and 3) Carriage. Each subsystem is analyzed in detail to check for failure against criteria like rupture, buckling, yielding, etc. The analyses ensure each component can withstand a critical design load of 3 tonnes, which is the desired lifting capacity of the machine. The report also provides design recommendations and addresses potential design shortcomings.
MASS PROPERTIES and AUTOMOTIVE DIRECTIONAL STABILITY
The quantification of automotive directional stability may be expressed through various stability metrics, but perhaps the most basic of these automotive stability metrics is the “Understeer Gradient” (Kus). The Understeer Gradient (in degrees or radians per unit gravity) appears extremely uncomplicated when viewed in its most common formulation.
This metric appears to depend only on the front and rear axle weight loads (Wf, Wr), and on the front and rear axle cornering stiffnesses (Csf, Csr). However, those last quantities vary with lateral acceleration, and the nature of that variation is dependent upon many other parameters of which some of the most basic are: Total Weight, Sprung Weight, Unsprung Weight, Forward Unsprung Weight, Rear Unsprung Weight, Total Weight LCG, Sprung Weight LCG, Total Weight VCG, Sprung Weight VCG, Track, Front Track, Rear Track, Roll Stiffness, Front Roll Stiffness, Rear Roll Stiffness, Roll Axis Height, Front Roll Center Height, and Rear Roll Center Height. Note that exactly half of these automotive directional stability parameters as listed herein are mass properties.
The purpose of this paper is to explore, through a skidpad simulation, the relative sensitivity of automotive directional stability (as quantified through the Understeer Gradient) to variation in each of the noted vehicle parameters, with special emphasis on the mass property parameters.
The simulation is constructed in a spreadsheet format from the relevant basic automotive dynamics equations; the normal and lateral loads on the tires are determined as the lateral acceleration is increased incrementally by a small amount (thereby maintaining a “quasi-static” or “steady-state” condition). The normal loads are used for the calculation of the lateral traction force potentials at each tire, with the required (centripetal) lateral traction forces apportioned accordingly. From those required (actual) lateral tire forces the corresponding tire cornering stiffnesses are determined; this determination is based upon a tire model developed through a regression analysis of tire test data.
This construction of a fairly comprehensive lateral acceleration simulation from basic automotive dynamic relationships, instead of depending upon commercial automotive software such as “CarSim” (vehicle model) and Pacjeka “Magic Formula” (tire model), constitutes a unique aspect of this paper; this return to basics hopefully provides a clearer view and understanding of the results than would be the case otherwise. Even more unique is this paper’s emphasis on, and exploration of, the role specific mass property parameters play in determining automotive directional stability.

Finite element analysis of polymer based automotive connecting rod
This document summarizes a study that performed finite element analysis to compare a conventional alloy steel connecting rod material to a polymer composite material (PEEK) reinforced with 40% carbon fibers for use in automotive engines. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
