As Father Daniel Mary, the prior of the Carmel-
ite Order of monks in Clark, Wyoming, walked
to chapel to preside over Mass, he noticed the
sun glistening across the four-inch snowfall
from the previous evening. Snow in june was
not unheard of in Wyoming, but the late snow-
fall and the bright glow of the rising sun made
him consider the opposing forces accompany-
ing change and how he might best prepare his
monastery to achieve his vision of creating a
new Mount Carmel in the Rocky Mountains.
His vision of transforming the small brother-
hood of 13 monks living in a small home used
as makeshift rectory into a 500-acre monas-
tery that would include accommodations for
30 monks, a Gothic church, a convent for
Carmelite nuns/ a retreat center for lay visitors,
and a hermitage presented a formidable
challenge. However, as a former high school
football player, boxer, bull rider, and man of
great faith, Father Prior Daniel Mary was unac-
customed to shrinking from a challenge.
Father Prior had identified a nearby ranch for
sale that met the requirements of his vision per-
fectly, but its current listing price of $8.9 million
presented a financial obstacle to creating a place
of prayer, worship, and solitude in the Rockies.
The Carmelites had received a $250,000 dona-
tion that could be used toward the purchase,
and the monastery had earned nearly $75,000
during the first year of its Mystic Monk coffee-
roasting operations, but more money would
be needed. The coffee roaster used to produce
packaged coffee sold to Catholic consumers
at the Mystic Monk Coffee website was reach-
ing its capacity, but a larger roaster could be
purchased for $35,000. Also, local Cody, Wyo-
ming, business owners had begr-rn a founda-
tion for those wishing to donate to the monks'
cause. Faiher Prior Daniel Mary did not have a
great deal of experience in business matters but
considered to what extent the monastery could
rely on its Mystic Monk Coffee operations to
fund the purchase of the ranch. If Mystic Monk
Coffee was capable of making the vision a real-
ity, what were the next steps in turning the cof-
fee into land?

- 2. Housing Early monasteries originated in Egypt as places where wandering hermits gathered. These early "monks" lived alone, but met in a common chapel. By the fifth century the monastic movement had spread to Ireland, where St. Patrick, the son of a Roman official, set out to convert the Irish to Christianity. The Irish monks spread Christianity into Cornwall, Wales, and Scotland. St. Ninian established a monastery at Whithorn in Scotland about 400 AD, and he was followed by St. Columba (Iona), and St. Aidan, who founded a monastery at Lindisfarne in Northumbria.
- 3. Daily Life(Routine) Although the details of daily life differed from one order to the next , monastic life was generally one of hard physical work, scholarship and prayer. Some orders encouraged the presence of "lay brothers", monks who did most of the physical labour in the fields and workshops of the monastery so that the full- fledged monks could concentrate on prayer and learning. Lay Brothers: In the past, the term lay brother was used within some Catholic religious institutes, to distinguish members who were not ordained from those members who were clerics (priests and seminarians).
- 4. Monastries Celtic MonsatriesCeltic Monsatries These Celtic monasteries were often built on isolated islands, as the lifestyle of the Celtic monks was one of solitary contemplation. There are no good remains of these early monasteries in Britain today. The monks who lived in these monasteries were considered very holy men. As with local churches, people would work on monastic land for free - to show their love of God. While it is easy to see medieval monasteries as performing some form of con with regards to preying on the superstitions and beliefs of the peasants, this is too simplistic to be valid. People in a village might have to give up two days a week to work for free for a monastery
- 5. Meals Two cooked dishes be enough for all the brothers: a third may be added if it is possible to grow or buy fruit and vegetables. One full pound of bread shall suffice for a day. The Monks of Micklegate would have had large gardens, orchards, and fish ponds in the 7 acres of land surrounding the monastery buildings. Here they would grow the food they needed to feed themselves their many guests.
