This document describes a microwave life detection system that can locate human subjects buried under earthquake rubble or other barriers. It operates at frequencies like 1150MHz or 450MHz and can detect breathing and heartbeats through barriers up to 10 feet thick. The system works by sending microwaves through rubble and detecting modulated signals reflected off living bodies beneath. It includes components like an oscillator, antennas, and a clutter cancellation system to filter out signals from rubble alone.

This topic will provide a detailed study about the optical heterodyne detection and its working. A heterodyne is a signal frequency that is created by combining or mixing two other frequencies using a signal processing technique called heterodyning.
Heterodyning is used to shift one frequency range into another, new frequency range, and is also involved in the processes of modulation and demodulation.
The two input frequencies are combined in a nonlinear signal-processing device such as a vacuum tube, transistor, or diode, usually called a mixer.

It is a simple and powerful concept, which uses transistor (BC 547) as a switch to switch ON and OFF the light automatically & a Light Dependent Resistors (LDR) which senses the light, made from a piece of exposed semiconductor material i.e cadmium sulphide, that changes its electrical resistance from several thousand Ohms in the dark to only a few hundred Ohms, when light hits the device, the photons give electrons energy by creating hole-electron pairs in the material. This makes them jump into the conductive band and thereby conduct electricity.
The circuit automatically switches ON lights when the light goes below the visible region & automatically switches OFF lights when light fall on it, by using a sensor which senses the light just like our eyes.
Also, the circuit has a long response time requiring many seconds to respond to a change in the light intensity.

Accelerometer and EOG Based Wireless Gesture Controlled Robotic ArmIJMER
- This paper deals with the Robotic arm controlled by arm and eye movements, where data
is acquired through the use of accelerometer and EOG amplifier. The hand movements are captured by
the Accelerometer and the eye movements are captured by EOG amplifier. The Robotic arm will pick
and place the object according to the movement of the hand and Robotic arm will move left and right
according to our eye movements. Signals are wirelessly transmitted through RF Encoder and Decoder.
Robotic arm is based on Arduino Duemilanove controller for signal processing, and interfaced with the
Controller serially. This Embedded system will help disabled persons to do work by their own. The
Robotic arm can be used to pick and place hazardous objects.
Impact of Vibration on a Computer Network Using Optical Fibre CablesPremier Publishers
This study was carried out to validate the negative impact of vibration on a computer network using optical fibre cables where the optical time–domain reflectometer (OTDR) of single mode configuration was employed to acquire signal losses on the network. The losses were categorized in three data sets such as that from a non–vibration (NV), a vibration source from a shaker and generator (SHG) and another source combining the shaker, generator, and a truck (SHGT). The impact of these results were compared on a column and area graph where we obtained a superimposed effect combining all data sets in the area graph that the vibration sources from SHGT had greater impact on the network as their reflected losses were -33.31dB, -33.29dB, and -33.34dB respectively for NV, SHG, and SHGT. The results further confirmed that signal losses on the network has a direct relationship with distance and also, vibration can as well help to normalize errors arising from poorly terminated cables and correct some splice faults as number of events an OTDR records are limited. This study also confirmed the possible use of this system to investigate underground movements likely to be earthquakes or road failure signs.
Voice Transmission System Based on Laser Torchijtsrd
This paper is designed for voice transmission system based on laser torch. In this system, it has two parts transmitting section and receiving section. The transmitting section mainly comprises with condenser microphone, IC 741, BC 548, BD 139 and laser torch. The receiving section composes with L14f1 photo transistor, LM 386 and Loud speaker. If there is any obstruction in the path of the laser beam, no sound will be heard from the receiver. The gain of the op amp can be controlled with the help of 1 mega ohm pot meter variable resistor. The AF output from the amplifier is coupled to the base of transistor BD 139, which in turn, modulates the laser beam. The receiver circuit uses NPN photo transistor as the light sensor that is followed by two stage transistor preamplifier and LM 386 based audio power amplifier. The receiver does not need any complicated alignment. The photo transistor is kept towards the remote transmitter's laser point and the volume control is adjusted for a clear sound. By the advent of this system the world death rate may decrease to greater
extent because large percentage of death occur due to earthquake.

5. Microwaves are electromagnetic wave with wavelengths
varying from 1mm to 1m and frequencies between 300MHz
and 300GHz.
This broad definition includes both UHF and EHF.
In all cases microwave includes the entire SHF band (3 to

9. L (or) S band frequency say 1150MHz
UHF band frequency say450 MHz
The microwave life detection system can works on different range
of frequencies from L-and (2GHz) to X –band (10GHz)
But X-band microwave is unable to penetrate deep into the rubble.
It can penetrate rubble up 1.5ft. In the thickness (5 layers of
bricks)
while L-band penetrate the rubble of about 3 ft in thickness(10
layers of bricks)
Depth of penetration depends up on frequency .i.e. it needs low frequency and more
wavelength.
But microwave have low wavelength and high frequency ,thus less is the
penetration power
But in comparison to x-ray, gamma ray , cosmic rays …..microwave have high
penetration power.

12. The wave radiated by the antenna 1 penetrates the earthquake
rubble to reach the buried person
The reflected wave received by the antenna to consist of large
reflected waves from the rubble and a small reflected wave
from the person’s body
The large clutter from the rubble can be cancelled by a clutter
cancelling signal
The small reflected wave from the person’s body could not be
cancelled by a pure sinusoidal cancelling because his/ her
movements modulate it
Output of the clutter cancellation circuit is automatically
adjusted to be of equal amplitude and oppose it phase as that of
the clutter from the rubble

13. 1. PHASE LOCKED OSCILLATOR:
A phase-shift oscillator is a simple electronic oscillator containing an
inverting amplifier elements.
Here the phase locked oscillator generates a very stable EM wave say
1150MHz with output power say 400mW.
2. DIRECTIONAL COUPLER:
A directional coupler is a 4 port network that is designed to divide and
distribute power.
The device is normally used to split the input signal and distribute power .
The coupled output from the directional coupler can be used to monitor
frequency and power level on the signal without interrupting the main
power flow in the system.

15. 3. CIRCULATOR:
A circulator is a ferrite device with usually three ports.
That is, energy in port1 predominantly exits port 2, energy into port 2
exit port 3, and energy into port 3 exits port 1.

16. 4. ANTENNA SYSTEM:
The dual antenna system has two antennas, which are
energized sequentially by an electronically controlled
microwave single-pole double-throw(SPDT).
The SPDT switch turns on and off at a certain frequency .
Each antenna acts separately .
Each act simultaneously as the radiating element and
receiving element .
It radiates EM wave through the earthquake rubble to reach the
trapped human subjects and at the same time it receives the
reflected EM wave from the rubble and the human subjects.

17. 5. CLUTTER CANCELLATION SYSTEM:
In any remote sensing instrument the clutter caused by
undesirable objects surrounding the detectable subject must be
cancel to the optimum level.
The clutter canceller forms the heart of life detection system.

19. Remote life sensing could be a powerful tool in applications
where access to the subject is limited.
The frequency 2.45GHz .i.e. L-band frequency and this is free
for use by commercial applications, so we expect a minimum
interference with other devices during our tests.
If a minute movement of the victim is observed then detection
can be done.

structure but it can penetrate over 10 layers of bricks .
