Skinput Technology Uses Skin as Touch Input Surface
1. SKINPUT TECHNOLOGY
ABSTRACT
Skinputis a technology thatappropriatesthe human body for acoustic
transmission, allowingthe skin to be used as an input surface. In particular, the
location of finger tapson the arm andhand isresolved by analyzing mechanical
vibrationsthat propagate through the body. Thesesignalsare collected using a
novel array of sensorsworn asan armband. Thisapproachprovidesan always
available, naturally portable, and on-body finger inputsystem. Thecapabilities,
accuracy and limitationsof this technique are assessed through a two-part,
twenty-participantuser study.
Skinputis a new skin-based interface thatallows users to use their own armsand
handsas touchscreensby sensing differentultra low-frequencysoundsthatare
generated when knockingvariouspartsof skin.
The feature of providing inputusing this projection is a boost. Simply, Skinputis
the latest technology of providing inputusing the projection on the human body.
The technology wasoriginated from the researchesof ChrisHarrison, Desney Tan,
and Dan Morrisat MicrosoftResearch’sComputationalUser Experience Group.
The term Skinputis the combination of the wordsskin and inputthat implies the
functionality of the technology –inputthru skin.
