The document discusses a student's search of library databases on the topic of stem cell research for a class project. The student searched the CINAHL database using the terms "stem cell research" and then narrowed the search by adding "and the government". This reduced the results from 493 to 80 articles. The student explored two articles in depth, one which was available as a full text PDF and another which required accessing through another database. The search helped the student focus their topic for a brochure on stem cell research and the relationship with government. The student identifies the National Institutes of Health and Mayo Clinic websites as potential resources for the project.

This source can be found on an HCC library database, so I am confident that this source is authentic and useful to provide me with authentic information regarding my topic. This work is in fact biased, clearly choosing to support the privacy of everyone in the U.S. The work is organized as an article in a journal. The article was published in 2012, but does not seem outdated; still holding true to valuable information. This source mainly outlines the right to privacy through the fourth amendment. It also involves the supreme court. This source would be useful in my paper. The information that this source gives is one that is needed to make my paper strong.

This source can be found on an HCC library database, so I am confident that this source is authentic and useful to provide me with authentic information regarding my topic. This work is biased as it states that our privacy is at risk. This source Is written as an article posted in a journal. This source was written in 2009, and seems to lack some up to date information. This source contains a lot about electronic eavesdropping of privacy when electronics were growing. I don’t feel that this source would be helpful now, looking back. It lacks that current information needed to strengthen my paper.

This article displays the rights possessed not only by people as individuals, but as institutions as well. This source would be useful in my paper. It outlines more of the factual evidence needed to write my paper.

3. The topic I chose that is of particular interest to me is the topic of stem cell research. I
used the CINAHL Ebsco Host database for my research. Using only the main search term “stem
cell research,” 493 results came up. When I added “and the government” to my search, 80 results
came up. Using only the main search term exposed me to a huge number of articles that I could
not possibly look through each and every one. Since I am mainly interested in the relationship
between stem cell research and the government, adding this extra term better refined my search.
It limited my search to only those articles that directly related to my topic. Narrowing down the
amount of results allowed me to explore each article thoroughly and find one that best suits what
I need.
The first article I chose to explore was “Broadening the Scope of Debates Around Stem
Cell Research.” I was able to obtain a full text PDF of this article so it was fairly easy to access.
The second article I chose to explore was “Ethics, Politics, and Human Embryo Stem Cell
Research.” I was unable to obtain a full text PDF from CINAHL so I had to click on “get
article.” From there, it brought me to another link that showed me two other databases that have
the full text. I clicked the one that said “article” and it brought me to another database called
ScienceDirect and I was able to download the full text PDF.
This search will be able to help me better prepare to write a brochure on my topic
because it will help me focus better on each aspect of my topic fully. With the search refinement,
I can diminish the amount of time it will take to look through the database for an article that
specifies my needs at that moment. For example, if I search for “stem cell research and history,”
I will be able to explore articles that relate specifically to that category. Rather than keeping my
search as broad as only inserting the main search term, I can save a useful amount of time in
searching and put in more effort exploring the best articles for my research topic.

6. The first website I will be using is the National Institutes of Health website. There are a
list of references and resources available on the website. There are no specific authors for the
website but it is accredited by the National Institutes of Health and the U.S Department of Health
and Human Services. Contact information is provided under the “Contact Us’ tab; phone
number, address, and email address are provided. The domain is NIH.gov so it is head by the
United States government. The NIH goals are listed under Mission in the “About NIH” tab.
Sponsorships are acknowledged under their “Grants and Funds” tab. The publication date is
April 4, 2013 so the information is recent. There is no special browser or payment of fee needed
to view all material. The information is free and accessible to everyone. There is a strong
likelihood that I will be using this website for my brochure project because the NIH is a well
know government- funded institute that provides recent and accurate information on such topics.
The second website I will be using is Mayo Clinic. There are a list of references and
resources available on the website. There are no specific authors for the website but it is
accredited by the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. Contact information is
provided under the “Contact Us” tab; phone number, address, email address, and names are
provided. The domain is mayoclinic.org so it is an accredited organization. The Mayo Clinic
mission and values are found under the “About Mayo Clinic” tab. Sponsorships are
acknowledged under their “Sponsorships” tab. The publication year is 2014 so all information
given is recent. There is no special browser or payment of fee needed to view all material. The
information is free and accessible to everyone. There is a possibility I will be using this website
for my brochure project because the Mayo Clinic Foundation is a well-known organization that
provides accurate and up-to-date information and resources.
