3. I found it very interesting to do this library database project. The library database website
is very reliable, accurate, and the articles are up to date, as well as organized. The library
database is available 24 hours from the comfort of your own home, which makes it great tool to
utilize for commuter students. Furthermore, the content of these databases has undergone a
review process, which ensures that the information found on it is more reliable than information
found on the internet.
First, I went to the Monmouth library website, then clicked the A to Z database, clicked
‘C’, and went to the site CINAHL. My initial search was with a simple term, “telemedicine”. The
term “telemedicine” resulted in 6,280 articles. I further narrowed the search by adding some
more additional information, such as the publisher, clicking full text, determining the range for
the year of publishing (2005-2015), which resulted in 878 results. With this, I opened one of
articles with full text. The article was titled, “High- Intensity Telemedicine-Enhanced Acute Care
for Adults” and discussed telemedicine acute care for older adults residing in a senior living
community is feasible and acceptable to residents and informal caregivers. (Ann et al. 2013)
By using telemedicine services, acute care can be provided for senior citizens in their
own community which is pivotal for avoiding unnecessary ER visits. I think at this time, with the
large amount of individuals with bad insurance coverage, it is a good option to have
telemedicine. I will use this article for my brochure. There are 41 references for this article. The
source of the article was mentioned, and it was published Nov. 1st, 2013. The article talked about
the study methods used. The study was conducted in a two year period. At the end of the study,
they talked about the authors in detail and who did what. Sponsorship is acknowledged, entry
revision dates are given. On the site it is free to view the material. In conclusion, I think it was a
detailed study about how telemedicine can improve the lives of senior citizens.
4. In the second article, titled “Telemedicine for Wound Care”, 36 references were given,
and the source of the article was the Wound Practice and Research Journal. There was no
abstract, it just discussed information on wound care by using telemedicine. There is no
explanation of any studies conducted, only facts. There are 3 authors, credentials of the authors
are available with phone number, fax number and email. The authors talked about the topic in
detail, especially how telemedicine helps disabled people in rural areas with chronic wound
conditions to get access to the tele health centers in the city which is almost 2000 miles away
from them. The website is free. I will also use this information for my brochure.
Search engine website
5.
6. For the search engines, I used Google and Yahoo. When I was using the search engine, I
found information with single key words but they do not have the advanced search capabilities
like a library database. The information provided on the website is not accurate and reliable. It
can be changed at any time. There were no review standards for the content. Search engines can
provide enormous amount of information but need to be evaluated before using for academic
assignments.
On the Forbes website, there was no reference, no explanation of research methods used,
but credentials of author is given. No contact information, no sponsorship was found. I don’t
know if this information is up to date or not. Of course I got some information about
telemedicine and how telemedicine is going to make an impact on the public especially for the
elderly population. This website and information found on it was free of charge. According to
the author, telemedicine will provide a better doctor patient relationship.
I read another article in the New York Times. I got lot of knowledge about telemedicine,
its advancement in the current healthcare system and the reimbursement plans. It’s amazing to
know a physician in Houston can treat a patient in China who works on an oil rig. Especially for
who works in those places, it is hard to get a doctor in an emergency situations. One of my
cousins, who was 48yrs old died in Philadelphia from acute MI when he was working in a ship.
It took so much time to bring him off the ship to take him to a doctor. If telemedicine was used
on the ship maybe, we could have saved the life of that young man. In this article, there are no
references, no research methods, only the authors name is given, no contact information, no
sponsorship, publication date is given ,no update date. No fee is needed to view the site.
