New forms of usage data like altmetrics are helping librarians to make smarter decisions about their collections. A recent nationwide study administered to 13,000+ librarians at R1 universities shines light on exactly how these metrics are being applied in academia. This presentation will share survey results, including as-yet-unknown rates of technology and metrics uptake among collection development librarians, the most popular citation databases and altmetrics services being used to make decisions, and surprising factors that affect attitudes toward the use of metrics. This presentation will also offer actionable insights on how altmetrics are being paired with bibliometrics and usage statistics to form a more complete picture of “trending” scholarship that’s worth purchasing. Through sharing the survey results and opening up a discussion about the potential altmetrics hold for informing collection development, the presenters aim to provide a learning opportunity for attendees which will enhance their competencies for e-resource management, specifically, core competence for e-resource librarians 3.5, use of bibliometrics for collection assessment, and 3.7, identity and analyze emerging technologies.
Promoting Open Access and Open Educational Resources to FacultyNASIG

Student debt is a compelling issue and many institutions are investigating solutions to ease the financial burdens of their students. Increasing the use of open educational resources benefits students by reducing course costs. Adopting OER in the classroom allows faculty more freedom in choosing instructional tools. Faculty also benefit from open access publishing by increasing their exposure. However, on the campus of a small, private institution, attendance at workshops to spread awareness and increase the use of these materials was minimal. Faculty had the perception that free resources could not be the same quality as traditional resources. In order to dispel this myth, the Electronic Resources Librarian and Educational Technology Manager collaborated to create custom one hour sessions for individual departments, leveraging library/faculty liaison relationships and the expertise of the office of educational technology. In the session, faculty learn more about open access publishing options, the value of open educational resources, the quality of many open educational resources, and where to find these resources. The session uses the course management system to both disseminate the information shared in the session and create a forum for departments to share resources with each other. Through the CMS, faculty gain access to vetted resources. All attendants have editing privileges within the site after the workshop, allowing them to curate course-specific lists for sharing and future reference. Pilot sessions have been well received and wider implementation is planned for the next academic year.

What does success look like when it comes to library discoverability? Index based discovery systems have seen a dramatic rate of adoption since introduction to the research ecosystem in 2009, with more than 9,000 libraries relying on a discovery system to provide users with a comprehensive index to their offerings. Some issues bar the way to providing this comprehensive view, but many challenges have been overcome through collaboration between libraries, content providers and discovery partners. The NISO ODI initiative began to examine these issues in 2011, and released a best practice in June 2014.
Speakers will highlight examples of successful collaboration, note continued areas of challenge, and provide insight on how the Open Discovery Initiative Conformance Checklists can be used as a mechanism to evaluate content provider or discovery provider conformance with the best practice.

Web-scale Discovery Services are becoming an integral part of libraries' information gathering arsenal. These services are able to use a single interface to seamlessly integrate results from a wide range of online sources, emulating the experience patrons have come to expect from Internet search engines. But despite their ability to streamline searching, discovery services provide a wide set of challenges for libraries who implement them. This virtual conference will touch on both the potential of discovery services as well as some of the issues involved.
What Students Want: Redesigning Research Guides Based on Student NeedsAmy Gratz Barker
Presented at LibTech Conference, March 15, 2018. Creating and maintaining research guides that students use and find helpful is an ongoing challenge. On deciding that our subject guides were due for a significant update, librarians at Kennesaw State University realized we needed to learn what our students wanted from these resources. We conducted a study focused on learning what information students expect to find on research guides, as well as how they would organize it. During this presentation I will share the study results and how that information was used to design a new subject guide template in LibGuides CMS. Additionally, I will explain beta-testing the new template prior to updating all subject guides for the fall 2018 semester. Attendees will take away recommendations for transferable design characteristics for your own guides, card sorting, and usability testing methodologies you can use to learn what your own community is looking for.

Good resource discovery tools are not simply about making research easier and faster, but about facilitating the creation, preservation and discovery of knowledge by enabling new modes of research, especially across disciplines. In 2014 the University of Oxford began a robust and unique program of activities to improve discovery of and access to its intellectual assets: garden, museum and library collections, open educational resources and research outputs and data. With over 100 libraries, five museums, botanic gardens and an arboretum at the University, Oxford has been working to find world-leading solutions for connecting students and researchers at Oxford (and abroad) with the collections that are available to them. The University also aimed to make its resources more findable by the wider community, to increase engagement with its world-class collections and research. A year-long research study revealed the nuances of why incoming researchers and students struggle to find relevant collections and found that simply providing better search tools across existing metadata will not improve the situation. Therefore, the University has set out to scope entirely new approaches discovery, exploring new tools and approaches to enable students and researchers at Oxford and abroad to understand the scope of collections held by the University and to find them quickly and efficiently. A current project seeks to create an innovative working prototype that balances users’ needs for cognitive maps against wide-ranging types, and robustness, of data.

- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
