This document outlines a research project exploring corporate social responsibility related to aging populations. It discusses three planned papers: 1) A literature review finding most research examines how aging influences corporations rather than corporate influences on aging. It argues for a new field of "corporate gerontology". 2) An analysis of global CSR schemes finding aging is rarely mentioned and almost never specifically addressed. It introduces the concept of "corporate geronto-responsibility". 3) A case study of Israeli bank sustainability reports finding little mention of aging, mainly regarding support for elderly parents of employees. The researcher argues for inclusion of aging in CSR and sustainability reporting guidelines.
4. The aim of this research project is to explore, identify,
and present the social responsibilities of business
corporations in face of humanity’s aging population.
5. A brief introduction to CSR?
(corporate social responsibility)
CSR is defined by the European Commission as "the responsibility of
enterprises for their impacts on society". Enterprises "should have in place
a process to integrate social, environmental, ethical human rights and
consumer concerns into their business operations and core strategy in
close collaboration with their stakeholders“ (EU, 2014)

7. Paper 1: Time for Corporate Gerontology: A Systematic
Literature Review
Goal –To explore the extend and context through which gerontology’s
academic literature is addressing the manner in which corporations
interact with, influence, and are influenced by older persons and the
aging of society;
Method – A systematic literature review (SLR) designed for exploring
and presenting the current state of academic research in the
multidisciplinary realm of aging and the business corporation.

Results - Of the forty-six
papers surveyed, the majority
belong to the category in
which aging is an independent
variable that influences the
performance of business
corporations. Only 27%
belong to the second category,
which is concerned with the
ways in which the conduct of
corporations can influence
various aspects of aging.
9. Paper 1
The findings of this study indicate, the business
corporation as an influential economic and social
institution has received very little attention in mainstream
gerontology research.
It is our hope that the establishment of a new theoretical framework
of corporate gerontology will raise awareness of this phenomenon
and thus contribute to the structuring of multi-sectoral social
resilience regarding aging. In short, the time has come for the rise of
corporate gerontology.
10. Paper 2: Aging’ in Global CSR Schemes: Time for Corporate
Geronto-Responsibility (CGR)".
Goal –To explore the presence and context of ‘aging’ in global CSR
schemes
Method – a mixed method approach that included both quantitative
and qualitative methods was used. This methodology provided an
inductive way of analysing the context in which aging appears and
exploring whether and how corporations are expected or being asked
to address this issue.

Israeli Banks
Goal –To explore the presence and context of ‘aging’ in 24
sustainability reports of Israeli banks
Method – a mixed method approach that included both quantitative
and qualitative methods was used. This methodology provided an
inductive way of analysing the context in which aging appears and
exploring whether and how corporations are addressing this issue de
facto.
15. Paper 3: Aging in Sustainability Reporting: A Case Study of
Israeli Banks
Results - “Aging” as a general theme is hardly present in the 24
reports, and when it does appear, it is mainly in the context of aid for
elderly parents of employees.
