Concept/Topic to Teach: Uppercase and lowercase letters

Standards Addressed: K.RFS.1.4 Recognize and name all upper-and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

Objective:
Given a graphic organizer, students will identify upper and lowercase letters in the alphabet with 100%
accuracy.

Required Materials:
Alphabet uppercase and lowercase worksheets
Markers/crayons

Anticipatory Set:
The purpose of this lesson is to recognize uppercase letters and lowercase letters. Who can tell me
what I mean by an uppercase letter or lowercase letter? Can you show me an uppercase letter or
lowercase letter that is in the classroom? (Then teacher will explain and give multiple examples of
uppercase and lowercase letters.) The big letters are known as an uppercase letters. The small letters
are known as lowercase letters. Knowing how to identify upper and lowercase letters will help you in
your writing and reading skills.

Instruction:
1. Teacher: “The big letters are known as an uppercase letters. The small letters are known as
lowercase letters.”
2. Teacher: Please have students sit on the floor in front of you near alphabet wall. Have students
look at the alphabet wall.
3. Teacher: Go over the alphabet with the students. Then identify all the uppercase and lowercase
letters on the alphabet wall.
4. Teacher: Point at the uppercase letter first and then the lowercase letter. For example: A-a, B-b,
C-c and so forth. After you have done this about three times put students in a group.
5. Teacher: Identify all of the uppercase letters only. Then identify all of the lowercase letters.

Guide Practice: Have students get in to groups of five. Have students practice with flash cards what
letters are uppercase letters and lowercase letters. I will walk around to make sure group work is done
correctly and to answer any questions.

Teacher: Here is the alphabet worksheet that is in your groups.
Teacher: I want you all to identify the uppercase letters and lowercase letters by taking turns with the
flash cards.
Teacher: “The big letters are known as an uppercase letters. The small letters are known as lowercase
letters.”

Independent Practice:
After group work. Students will be given the Alphabet uppercase and lowercase letters worksheet.
They will identify uppercase and lowercase letters from the alphabet and color each letter as specified.
Each student will turn in assignment individually for a grade.

Closure:
Have students come back to the floor and face the alphabet wall. Allow students to identify uppercase
and lowercase letters in the classroom. Who can show me an uppercase letter on the alphabet wall?
