Childhood obesity, a very complex health issue that becomes a growing problem in the U.S. In fact, “over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates have tripled in the U.S., and today, the country has some of the highest obesity rates in the world: one out of six children is obese, and one out of three children is overweight or obese.” (Child obesity, n.d.). Physical diseases and conditions are often accompanying obesity. Also, obesity may have an adverse effect on various systems in a child’s body, such as heart, lungs, muscles and bones, kidneys, digestive tract, and hormones that control blood sugar and puberty. Furthermore, it can take a toll on social life because obese kids and teenagers are more likely to have low self-esteem. “Childhood obesity is one of the most serious threats to the health of our nation.” (Building evidence to prevent childhood obesity, n.d.). Children and youth who are obese and overweight will likely remain overweight or obese into adulthood.

MESSAGE FROM THE SURGEON
GENERAL
Our nation stands at a crossroads. Today’s
epidemic of overweight and obesity threatens the
historic progress we have made in increasing
American’s quality and years of healthy life.
Two-third of adults1 and nearly one in three
children are overweight or obese.2 In addition,
many racial and ethnic groups and geographic
regions of the United States are
disproportionately affected.3 The sobering impact
of these numbers is reflected in the nation’s
concurrent epidemics of diabetes, heart disease,
and other chronic diseases. If we do not reverse
these trends, researchers warn that many of our
children—our most precious resource—will be
seriously afflicted in early adulthood with
medical conditions such as diabetes and heart
disease. This future is unacceptable. I ask you to
join me in combating this crisis.
Every one of us has an important role to play in
the prevention and control of obesity. Mothers,
fathers, teachers, business executives, child care
professionals, clinicians, politicians, and
government and community leaders—we must
all commit to changes that promote the health
and wellness of our families and communities.
As a nation, we must create neighborhood
communities that are focused on healthy nutrition
and regular physical activity, where the healthiest
choices are accessible for all citizens. Children
should be having fun and playing in
environments that provide parks, recreational
facilities, community centers, and walking and
bike paths. Healthy foods should be affordable
and accessible. Increased consumer knowledge
and awareness about healthy nutrition and
physical activity will foster a growing demand
for healthy food products and exercise options,
dramatically influencing marketing trends.
Hospitals, work sites, and communities should
make it easy for mothers to initiate and sustain
breastfeeding as this practice has been shown to
prevent childhood obesity. Working together, we
will create an environment that promotes and
facilitates healthy choices for all Americans. And
we will live longer and healthier lives.

Before you design any nutrition education intervention, whether it is a few sessions or a larger program with several components, it is important to determine your intervention focus and identify your intended primary audience. When those have been determined, you will need detailed information on the behaviors and practices that contribute to the issue or problem you have selected as your intervention focus. Step 1 worksheets will help you conduct assessments to obtain the information you will need.
Think of yourself as a detective as you work through these worksheets. You are trying to find out as much as you can to determine which core behaviors or behavioral goals will be the targets for your educational sessions.
The information you collect may be quite extensive, depending on the scope and duration of your intervention, and will vary by category. Cite information sources (e.g., journal article, government report, observation, interview) used in the worksheet in a bibliography at the end of this step.
At the end of the Step 1 worksheets, you should have products for Steps 1A, 1B, and 1C as follows:
Step 1A: Health issues or needs (one or two) and primary intended audience for the nutrition education intervention. Examples are “overweight in teenagers” or “low rates of breastfeeding in a low-income audience.”

Obesity is a chronic medical condition and a significant health concern in the United States that is increasing worldwide. More than one third of the adults in the U.S. are obese. It is a leading cause of preventable illness and death (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2016). This global epidemic is a leading concern for adults and for children who are predisposed to becoming obese as adults. This paper will discuss the significance of obesity in Florida, provide a background of the disease, review current surveillance and reporting methods, conduct a descriptive epidemiological analysis, discuss diagnosis and screening for prevention tools, develop an evidence based plan along with measureable outcomes to address obesity as an advanced practice nurse, and conclude with an overview of the main points presented.
Background and Significance
According to the CDC (2016), obesity is defined as “weight that is higher than what is considered as a healthy weight for a given height.” It involves excessive weight gain and accumulation of fat. In order to determine obesity, Body Mass Index or BMI is used to indirectly calculate a person’s body fat and health risk based on weight in relation to height. A BMI of 25.0 or above is considered overweight and 30.0 or greater is considered obese. Athletes with a greater amount of muscle mass may have a higher BMI even though they do not have excess body fat. Waist circumference is also used as a tool to diagnose obesity.
There are many causes that contribute to obesity, including behavioral, genetic, hormonal, environmental, and social factors. Increase in caloric intake, unhealthy eating habits, decrease in physical activity, certain medications, age, lack of sleep, quitting smoking, pregnancy, and certain medical disorders can contribute to weight gain (Mayo Clinic, 2018). Driving cars has replaced walking and riding bikes, technology has replaced engaging in physical activity, and easy access to cheaper foods has replaced nutritional importance. Most people are aware when weight is gained. Obvious signs and symptoms are tighter clothes, excess fat, and increased weight on a scale. Being overweight or obese increases the risk for many health diseases. Obesity may cause low endurance, breathing issues, excessive sweating, and joint discomfort. It can also lead to diabetes, gastroesophageal reflux disease, coronary heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke, depression, and even certain types of cancer such as bowel, breast, and prostate cancer (Mayo Clinic, 2018).
Below is a map that highlights the obesity prevalence across the U.S. in 2016 according to the CDC. There is no significant difference in overall prevalence between men and women. The prevalence of women with a BMI > 35 is 18.3% compared to 12.5% of men. The.

Identification of the Organization
As a stakeholder in the Nutrition, Food and Obesity Coalition, our main focus is to address the needs of people suffering from obesity and also advocate for better food and nutrition in order to prevent the development of obesity among populations.
The organization’s stand on the issue of obesity is that obesity is very rampant in our societies that it affects even young school-going kids. This isn’t a good reflection of our society and more efforts should be employed to minimize and manage obese cases among populations.
Proposed Bill S.2726
The bill S. 2726 that is referred to as ”Reducing Obesity in Youth Act of 2018” was formulated to ensure that the Public Health Service Act is amended in order to soundly address obesity among children.
The bill proposes that physical activity and healthy eating among children must be enhanced. This can be done through various forums which will involve the parents, teachers, trainers and any other stakeholder that interacts with children.
Our Stand on the Proposed Bill S. 2726
Our organization is fully supporting the Bill S. 2726 because the adoption of this bill will greatly reduce the cases of children with obesity.
Research has shown that kids who are over-weight while young tend to become obese while adults. Therefore, adopting the bill will minimize the cases of obese kids and young future adults.
I personally support this bill because through this bill, the lives of many children will be free from obese complications and a healthy lifestyle will be promoted.
The bill will also enhance the realization of our organization (and other organizations working to address obesity) goals of promoting healthy eating and managing obesity cases in a proper manner.
I would ask all policy makers to vote YES for the Bill S. 2726 as this will be a big milestone in promoting healthy foods and nutrition and, in turn, tackle obesity cases within the human population.
Personally, I have witnessed children who suffer from obesity due to their unhealthy lifestyle. For instance, instead of playing outside, most kids prefer to play video games. This increases their inactivity levels thereby promoting the occurrence of obesity. Therefore, voting YES for a bill that will reduce a child’s screen time and increase his/her outdoor playtime will be a plus to the fight against obesity cases among children.
Research by Alston, Okrent, & Parks (2012) acknowledge that obesity is a public health menace that affects most American population. They, therefore, find it more effective to implement policies that will curb this menace. Voting the Bill S. 2726 will be a major milestone in the fight against obesity.
It is our duty to take care of the health issues of our children since they are the future leaders. For us to maintain a healthy population in the future, more work should be done.

People on dialysis are at high risk for heart disease, the leading cause of early death for dialysis patients. It can be challenging to follow a traditional heart-healthy diet when on dialysis because many heart-healthy foods are also high in potassium and phosphorus. The guidelines recommend including lean meats, eggs, fruits, and vegetables while limiting high-fat, high-sodium processed meats and saturated and trans fats. Controlling blood sugar, blood pressure, and exercising also help protect heart health for dialysis patients.

This may include genetic, or other body disorders. The prevalence of the problem is increasing instead of reducing. Obesity rates have increased across all the population groups in the United States. Evidence based Practice
Healthy People 2010 aims to improve national health through two overarching goals: increasing quality and years of healthy life, and eliminating health disparities. It monitors progress through 467 objectives across 28 focus areas. Achieving its goals requires recognizing that health is determined by interactions between individual behaviors, environments, and policies targeting factors like access to healthcare. Childhood obesity, a very complex health issue that becomes a growing problem in the U.S. In fact, “over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates have tripled in the U.S., and today, the country has some of the highest obesity rates in the world: one out of six children is obese, and one out of three children is overweight or obese.” (Child obesity, n.d.). Physical diseases and conditions are often accompanying obesity. Also, obesity may have an adverse effect on various systems in a child’s body, such as heart, lungs, muscles and bones, kidneys, digestive tract, and hormones that control blood sugar and puberty. Furthermore, it can take a toll on social life because obese kids and teenagers are more likely to have low self-esteem. “Childhood obesity is one of the most serious threats to the health of our nation.” (Building evidence to prevent childhood obesity, n.d.). Children and youth who are obese and overweight will likely remain overweight or obese into adulthood.

MESSAGE FROM THE SURGEON
GENERAL
Our nation stands at a crossroads. Today’s
epidemic of overweight and obesity threatens the
historic progress we have made in increasing
American’s quality and years of healthy life.
Two-third of adults1 and nearly one in three
children are overweight or obese.2 In addition,
many racial and ethnic groups and geographic
regions of the United States are
disproportionately affected.3 The sobering impact
of these numbers is reflected in the nation’s
concurrent epidemics of diabetes, heart disease,
and other chronic diseases. If we do not reverse
these trends, researchers warn that many of our
children—our most precious resource—will be
seriously afflicted in early adulthood with
medical conditions such as diabetes and heart
disease. This future is unacceptable. I ask you to
join me in combating this crisis.
Every one of us has an important role to play in
the prevention and control of obesity. Mothers,
fathers, teachers, business executives, child care
professionals, clinicians, politicians, and
government and community leaders—we must
all commit to changes that promote the health
and wellness of our families and communities.
As a nation, we must create neighborhood
communities that are focused on healthy nutrition
and regular physical activity, where the healthiest
choices are accessible for all citizens. Children
should be having fun and playing in
environments that provide parks, recreational
facilities, community centers, and walking and
bike paths. Healthy foods should be affordable
and accessible. Increased consumer knowledge
and awareness about healthy nutrition and
physical activity will foster a growing demand
for healthy food products and exercise options,
dramatically influencing marketing trends.
Hospitals, work sites, and communities should
make it easy for mothers to initiate and sustain
breastfeeding as this practice has been shown to
prevent childhood obesity. Working together, we
will create an environment that promotes and
facilitates healthy choices for all Americans. And
we will live longer and healthier lives.

Before you design any nutrition education intervention, whether it is a few sessions or a larger program with several components, it is important to determine your intervention focus and identify your intended primary audience. When those have been determined, you will need detailed information on the behaviors and practices that contribute to the issue or problem you have selected as your intervention focus. Step 1 worksheets will help you conduct assessments to obtain the information you will need.
Think of yourself as a detective as you work through these worksheets. You are trying to find out as much as you can to determine which core behaviors or behavioral goals will be the targets for your educational sessions.
The information you collect may be quite extensive, depending on the scope and duration of your intervention, and will vary by category. Cite information sources (e.g., journal article, government report, observation, interview) used in the worksheet in a bibliography at the end of this step.
At the end of the Step 1 worksheets, you should have products for Steps 1A, 1B, and 1C as follows:
Step 1A: Health issues or needs (one or two) and primary intended audience for the nutrition education intervention. Examples are “overweight in teenagers” or “low rates of breastfeeding in a low-income audience.”
Step 1B: High-priority behaviors contributing to the selected issues. A set of one to a few nutrition-related behaviors or community practices that contribute to the health issue(s) that you identified.

· Individuals at greater risk are non-white subpopulation females with income below 130% poverty level.

· School vending typically has poor nutritional value, high sugar and fat content. Resistance to change in vending snacks from students and school staff may be added barriers for change.
· Funding is limited and lowers nutritional content that match up to what is recommended. Value enhanced food costs more than instant fast foods which require minimal or no preparation.
· Subpopulation Hispanic children/adolescents are at greatest risk for developing obesity
· Males represent 25.3% and females represent 21.8% of obesity.
· Cultural and economic factors contribute to high rates of consumption of high fat/starch/carbohydrate food content. These factors also lead to increased heart disease, hypertension and diabetes in this subpopulation.

· Type II Diabetes Mellitus and other chronic illness are increasing in youth
· Insulin Resistance, a precursor to Type II Diabetes, is increasing among youth, along with other chronic illnesses, such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, heart disease.
· Increased preventative medical visits among youth, especially subpopulations, are risk factors that may lead to early death/morbidity in the new generations to come.
· Lack of health education, physical activity, and poor nutritional availability or poor choices aid in the epidemic of obesity in youth and subpopulations.
· Food is expensive, good nutritionally valued food is MORE expensive. Hard economic times place hardship on food choices made by families.

Driving cars has replaced walking and riding bikes, technology has replaced engaging in physical activity, and easy access to cheaper foods has replaced nutritional importance. Most people are aware when weight is gained. Obvious signs and symptoms are tighter clothes, excess fat, and increased weight on a scale. Being overweight or obese increases the risk for many health diseases. Obesity may cause low endurance, breathing issues, excessive sweating, and joint discomfort. It can also lead to diabetes, gastroesophageal reflux disease, coronary heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke, depression, and even certain types of cancer such as bowel, breast, and prostate cancer (Mayo Clinic, 2018).
Below is a map that highlights the obesity prevalence across the U.S. in 2016 according to the CDC. There is no significant difference in overall prevalence between men and women. The prevalence of women with a BMI > 35 is 18.3% compared to 12.5% of men. The.

Identification of the Organization
As a stakeholder in the Nutrition, Food and Obesity Coalition, our main focus is to address the needs of people suffering from obesity and also advocate for better food and nutrition in order to prevent the development of obesity among populations.
The organization’s stand on the issue of obesity is that obesity is very rampant in our societies that it affects even young school-going kids. This isn’t a good reflection of our society and more efforts should be employed to minimize and manage obese cases among populations.
Proposed Bill S.2726
The bill S. 2726 that is referred to as ”Reducing Obesity in Youth Act of 2018” was formulated to ensure that the Public Health Service Act is amended in order to soundly address obesity among children.
The bill proposes that physical activity and healthy eating among children must be enhanced. This can be done through various forums which will involve the parents, teachers, trainers and any other stakeholder that interacts with children.
Our Stand on the Proposed Bill S. 2726
Our organization is fully supporting the Bill S. 2726 because the adoption of this bill will greatly reduce the cases of children with obesity.
Research has shown that kids who are over-weight while young tend to become obese while adults. Therefore, adopting the bill will minimize the cases of obese kids and young future adults.
I personally support this bill because through this bill, the lives of many children will be free from obese complications and a healthy lifestyle will be promoted.
The bill will also enhance the realization of our organization (and other organizations working to address obesity) goals of promoting healthy eating and managing obesity cases in a proper manner.
I would ask all policy makers to vote YES for the Bill S. 2726 as this will be a big milestone in promoting healthy foods and nutrition and, in turn, tackle obesity cases within the human population.
Personally, I have witnessed children who suffer from obesity due to their unhealthy lifestyle. For instance, instead of playing outside, most kids prefer to play video games. This increases their inactivity levels thereby promoting the occurrence of obesity. Therefore, voting YES for a bill that will reduce a child’s screen time and increase his/her outdoor playtime will be a plus to the fight against obesity cases among children.
Research by Alston, Okrent, & Parks (2012) acknowledge that obesity is a public health menace that affects most American population. They, therefore, find it more effective to implement policies that will curb this menace. Voting the Bill S. 2726 will be a major milestone in the fight against obesity.
It is our duty to take care of the health issues of our children since they are the future leaders. For us to maintain a healthy population in the future, more work should be done.

People on dialysis are at high risk for heart disease, the leading cause of early death for dialysis patients. It can be challenging to follow a traditional heart-healthy diet when on dialysis because many heart-healthy foods are also high in potassium and phosphorus. The guidelines recommend including lean meats, eggs, fruits, and vegetables while limiting high-fat, high-sodium processed meats and saturated and trans fats. Controlling blood sugar, blood pressure, and exercising also help protect heart health for dialysis patients.

While it may take some getting used to, experimenting with flavors can enhance enjoyment. The diet emphasizes a variety of soft, pureed foods and liquids that are gentle on the digestive system.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

November 9, 2014 The Honorable Bill Nelson 716 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510 Dear Senator Nelson: As a fellow native Floridian, I would like to thank you for co-sponsoring S.539; the National Diabetes Clinical Care Commission Act. This bill will establish a Commission within the Department of Health and Human Services that will evaluate current federally funded diabetes programs and recommend the necessary measures to fill the gaps in such programs. The goal of this bill is to provide better coordination of care as well as prevention programs for pre-diabetes and diabetes. Diabetes and pre-diabetes is a growing concern in our country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 20 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes with over 1.5 million being Florida residents.1 Studies have found that coordination of care, expansion of diabetes education, and cost-effective interventions are necessary for the treatment and prevention of diabetes particularly for older Americans.2 All of these goals could be met should this bill be enacted. As a future registered dietitian, I applaud the inclusion of certified diabetes educators and clinical dietitians on this proposed commission. The link between diabetes management and nutrition is undisputed. The ideal situation would be for an individual with diabetes to be referred to a Registered Dietitian for nutrition therapy and nutrition education. Unfortunately, most individuals in our country are not receiving the proper treatment or education for their diabetes in the area of nutrition.3 This is one of the gaps the proposed bill will fill. In addition, this bill is in line with and would help promote the Healthy People 2020 objectives related to diabetes. For example, the coordination of care proposed in this bill would help increase the number of persons who receive an annual dental exam, increase the number of persons who receive diabetes education, and ultimately reduce the number of newly diagnosed cases in our country.4 Unfortunately, it appears that this bill is currently stalled in committee.
