What are defining and nondefining relative clauses
Defining mean essential ( important)
None defining means not essential ( not important)
https://youtu.be/7AfKYUwlClo
First lets learn all about the relative pronouns
• They are words used to refer to nouns
• https://youtu.be/QmMGo265bWk?feature=shared
Defining relative clauses rules
They give ESSENTIAL INFORMATION
We DON’T USE COMMAS in them.
• WHO, and WHICH can be substituted by THAT
• Ann’s sister who is a tennis champion visited her last
weekend.
• The table whose legs are broken is at the back of the
classroom.
Non-defining relative clauses rules:
 They give EXTRA INFORMATION
 We USE COMMAS in them
 That can’t replace ( who, and which)
 Ann’s sister, who is a tennis champion, visited her last week.
 (We probably know that Ann has got only one sisiter)
 Charles Dickens, whose novel Oliver Twist we read last term, was born two
hundred years ago.
 (We already know that Ch.Dickens wrote Oliver Twist)
Steps to join two sentences in a relative
clause
1.- Find the common element
The man is very tall. I saw him yesterday.
2.- Cross out the second element.
That man is very tall. I saw him yesterday.
3.- Start copying the first sentence until the first
common element.
4.- Write the relative pronoun:
who
which
whose
That man
5.- Copy the second sentence, except the
element we had crossed out.
I saw yesterday
The man who
6.- If there is anything left from the first
sentence, copy it afterwards.
is very tall.
The man who I saw yesterday
