Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival Conference ~ Slides from the Afternoon Session ~ Why does the nation's diet need to change? What practical steps are needed to achieve change in the public sector and among consumers? What is the role of education in initiating change? How do we involve the local community? What are the links between food, environment and health?
Dear Friends,
Finally, we have come out with an Annual Report of activities carried out by NEEV in 2010-11. All of you have been receiving regular updates by NEEV, nonetheless, we think, it is a delightful experience to see the entire mosaic pieced together.
As we affirm in every message to all of you, the journey of NEEV which is going to complete 5 years this 31st October, could never, ever, have been possible without the unstinted support of so many of you. NEEV has almost become a behemoth for us to handle with our seemingly puny wills and efforts. For us it is a divine spectacle unfolding, a quilt of unimaginable complexity being stitched together by aspirations, efforts and goodwill of disparate actors spread across time and space.
Each year, as I contemplate the journey we have undertaken and the journey we are dreaming to undertake, I include dollops of “miracles”, “prayers” and “goodwill” of people in my “strategic planning”; it is only through a measure of faith that we can think of even surviving what we are thinking of doing.
Having said that, I would definitely like to steal credit for our NEEV team that works like ants, day in and day out. Our reports don’t contain the accidents and skids our members have negotiated to reach remote village interiors on rainy days, nor do they contain the sleepless nights I have spent worrying about where our finances will come from, nor do they contain the tears that have flown and the tears that have been wiped........the hurts, the angst and the “jidd”
Yes, humare pass shaayad ek hi hatyaar hai.................woh hai, “ek jabardast jidd”, NEEV ki NEEV mitne nahi denge !!
Our sincere thanks to Mr. Salil Roy (Director, Systems – NEEV) for making an attractive Annual Report.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

5. Class room interaction procedure Pupil’s response
INTRODUCTION
Teacher entered the class and made a casual introduction with the students. Then the teacher
asked tht what they had for breakfast? Then the teacher asked that what is the basic needs of human
life? After the response of the pupil, the teacher stated that food is the most important factor needed
by us. For where do we get food or food grains? From the response of the pupil, teacher entered into
the topics “Agriculture”. Then the teacher explained about agriculture, and “differences in traditional
and modern methods of agriculture in Kuttanad”. Then the teacher said that, today we are going to
learn our topic through a new method.
PRESENTATION
The teacher selected two students from the class and asked them to play the rules of an old traditional
farmer and a modern present day farmer. And also gave them some time to prepare for the same.
Teacher also gave direction and support to the role players. After some time, the pupil get ready and
started the conversation between the old farmer and new farmer.
CONVERSATION
Old farmer : Hai my son, its very glad to see you after a long time. How is your life and how your
cultivation going?
Pupil listening the
conversation.
6. New farmer : Hai uncle. I am also very happy to see you. Are you fine? I am happy and my
farming goes on very well. I got 30-40 ‘meni’ of crop every year.
Old farmer : Oh! Its great. In our period, we got only 14-20 ‘meni’ crop. How it become possible?
New farmer : We got high yielding variety of seeds from govt. and market. Then we get cultivate
and able to yield this much of crop.
Old farmer : But in my period, we get only two varieties of seeds, that is “Chambavu and
Karuthachara”.
New Farmer : Then we are drained to use modern pump sets for draining and filling of water from
and on the fileds.
Old farmer : Pump sets were very unusual in out times. We always used to work with water
wheels for draining of water. But it was not easy to work with it. 8-10 persons were
needed to do this. And some times oit may take long hours to drain the entire water.
New farmer : But it is very easy to work with Pump sets, because it does not need human effort.
Then we use chemical fertilizers and pesticides for the crops.
Old farmer : We even don’t hear about chemical fertilizers and pesticides. We always used organic
fertilizers made in our home and used worm basket for removing worms and pests.
New farmer : Worm basket? What is it? How worms were removed by this basket?
Pupil listening the
conversation.
7. Ole farmer : For this, water was made to fill the paddy field. When the seed sprouted, water level
was mde in such a way as to allow the tip of the paddy leaves to be seen above the
water level. All the pests used to come and gather at the tip of the leaves. Then they
would be beaten with a broom stick and gathered in a basket called “Worm basket”.
New farmer : It is very nice to hear about this technique. We have tractors and harvest machines.
It helps us to do works within time and reduces human effort and expenditures.
Old farmer : We use ox and plough for preparing the field and human workers for harvesting.
New farmer : But we are facing some problems also in our farming. Due to the increased use of
chemical fertilizers, the fertility of soil decreases and rate of yield diminishes.
Old farmer : Another important problem is the environmental pollution. Water and land become
polluted due to the mixing up with chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
New farmer : We also are bothered about it. We should reduce the use of chemicals in our fields.
Soil testing centres and paddy research centers and Govt. also take initiatives to
solve our problems.
Old farmer : It is a good thing. During my period, we didn’t get any support from the external
factors. We were in debt trap some times.
New farmer : Banks and other institutions are ready to give us credits as loans. So we are not
much bothered about financial problems.
Old farmer : Our place has changed a lot. Everything has been changed. Farming pattern also
changed. I wish you be a good farmer without disturbing the environment and nature.
God bless you child.
8. New farmer : Thank you uncle, see you again.
The teacher congratulated the role players and gave them small gifts.
Then the teacher divided the class into ‘4’ groups named A, B, C and D. then asked to discuss and
write the main difference between modern and traditional methods of agriculture in a tabular form.
After the discussion each group leaders were asked to present their ideas.
Codification :-
Teacher codified with the help of the chart that;
Traditional method Modern method
Two seed variety High yielding variety of seeds
Normal irrigation Scientific irrigation
Water wheels Pump sets
Bio organic fertilizers Chemical fertilizers
Worm basket method Pesticides and Insecticides
More human effort Less human effort
Plough and ox Tractor
Labourers for harvesting Harvest machines
No financial supports Bank loans and credits
Pupil doing group discussion
and presenting their findings.
Pupil observing the chart
carefully and listening to the
teacher.
9. Then the teacher shows the pictures of traditional and modern equipments used in agriculture and
their names.
