Water ecosystems can be divided into three main categories: plankton, nekton, and benthos. 97% of the Earth is covered in salt water and 3% in fresh water. Freshwater ecosystems include rivers and streams, which are running water ecosystems, and lakes and ponds, which are standing water ecosystems. Ocean ecosystems contain several zones from the intertidal zone near the shore to the deep abyssal zone. Where salt water and fresh water meet is called an estuary, which contains a mix of both and usually salt marshes.
