Apple sues Motorola over iPhone patents
1.
2. Apple Inc sued rival Motorola Inc, claiming the Droid
smartphone maker infringes on three iPhone
patents.
Motorola is purposefully using its touchscreen
software, as well as other display technologies.
Motorola's infringing activities have caused and will
continue to cause Apple irreparable harm, for which
it has no adequate remedy at law, unless Motorola's
infringing activities are enjoined.
Motorola has a leading intellectual property
portfolio, one of the strongest in the industry, and we
intend to vigorously defend ourselves in this matter,"
the company said.
3. Google's Android software platform rose to No. 2
spot globally on the booming smartphone market in
the third quarter, research firm Canalys.
Nokia's Symbian continued to lead the market with
a 37% share, while Android had 17% of the market.
Growing popularity of Android phones—made by
companies including Motorola Inc, HTC and
Samsung Electronics—puts Google in a good
position as handsets look set to surpass computers
for browsing the Web.
Last quarter it saw a 14-fold growth from very low
levels a year ago.
4. Sugar exports are set to begin next month with the
government likely to expedite the processing of
applications from sugar mills for release of about 5
lakh tonne of sugar for exports.
Large exports from India could swiftly depress global
sugar prices, frittering away the very advantage that
the sugar mills and exporters from here hope to gain .
This is the first time in nearly 15 years that the Indian
sugar industry finds itself in a position of projected
plenty even while the global market is experiencing
supply tightness and firm prices.
5. India on Monday made significant progress in its
efforts to enter into a civil nuclear deal with
Japan.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Japanese
Prime Minister Naoto Kan, the two leaders
welcomed the commencement of negotiations
between India and Japan on an agreement for
cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear
energy in June 2010.
Cooperation in this sector will open up new
opportunities for further developing the India-
Japan strategic and global partnership.
6. Exporters rose to a 24-month high in
September while imports grew a tad less,
lowering the trade deficit and creating
policy space for the government to restrict
the destabilising capital flows without
worrying about funding the large gap
between imports and exports.
Exports grew 23.2% to $18.02 billion while
imports rose 26.1% to $27.1 billion, which
helped restrict the trade deficit to $9.12
billion from an alarming more than $13
billion in August.
