Complex roles of a teacher
A teacher’s role is broader and inclusive of other
functions.

t
The classroom is the
first place of curriculum
engagement.
The first school experience sets
tone to understand the meaning
of schooling through the
interactions of learners and
teachers that will lead to
learning.
Curriculum is at the heart of
schooling.
What does a TEACHER do to deserve
the label Curricularist?
Roles of the teacher as a
Curricularist
1. KNOWER
The teacher as a learner
starts with knowing about
the curriculum, the subject
matter, or the content.
A teacher has to master
what are included in the
curriculum
It is acquiring academic
knowledge about formal
(disciplines, logic) or
informal (derived from
experiences, unintended).
(Knows the
curriculum)
FORMAL
Studying further like
pursuing graduate
degrees like Master’s
degree, PhD, etc.
Attending seminars or
workshops
Planned education of
different subjects having
a proper syllabus
acquired by attending
the institution.
Can be firsthand,
vicarious or unintended
Firsthand: When you’re
trying to study on your
own like your hobby
Vicarious: when
someone attended a
seminar and talks to
you about what she
learned
Unintended: browsing
the internet but
acquired a useful
knowledge by chance
INFORMAL
“Being a knower of a curriculum
means having mastery of the
subject matter.”
FOR
EXAMPLE:
Teacher Alaine attended
many seminar and webinars
to gain further knowledge on
how to teach effectively in
the new normal online
learning.
She also wanted to advance
her studies and so she
enrolled in a university where
she will get her doctoral
degree.
2. WRITER
A classroom teacher takes
record of knowledge
concepts, subject matter or
content which need to be
written or preserved.
The teacher writes books,
modules, laboratory
manuals, instructional
guides, and reference
materials in paper or
electronic media.
(Writes the
curriculum)
FOR EXAMPLE:
Teacher Cora
diligently makes
her own modules
for her grade 3
learners.
During checking
the answered
modules, if some
learners get a low
score, Teacher
Cora will then
make another
reference
material easily
understand by
3. PLANNER(Plans the curriculum)
The teacher as a planner of the curriculum
analyzes philosophical basis, psychological
explanations, historical developments, and
societal demands and influences, and how
each should be integrated in the teaching –
learning process.
3. PLANNER(Plans the curriculum)
 The teacher makes a
yearly, monthly, or daily
plan o the curriculum
that will serve as a guide
in the implementation o
the curriculum
 The teacher takes into
consideration several
factors in planning a
curriculum: the learners,
the support material,
time, subject matter or
content, the desired
outcomes, the context of
FOR EXAMPLE:
Teacher Linda makes
her own organized time
schedule with the
designated subjects
before the school
starts.
In her every lesson, she
plans the learning
goals and outcomes for
her learners. She also
4.INITIATOR (Initiates the curriculum)
The curriculum is recommended to the
schools by regulatory agencies
4.INITIATOR (Initiates the curriculum)
the teacher is
obliged to
implement the
recommended
curriculum for the
first time
Implementation of
a new curriculum
requires the open
mindedness of
the teacher, and
the full belief that
the curriculum
will enhance
learning
4.INITIATOR (Initiates the curriculum)
“There will be many constraints and
difficulties in doing things first or leading,
however, a transformative teacher will
never hesitate to try something novel and
relevant.”
FOR
EXAMPLE:
In Grade 7 to Grade 10
of the K to 12 Enhanced
Curriculum, Science as a
subject is presented,
taught and learned in a
spiral manner.
To address the mode of
learning delivery
Teacher Matthew
initiated to request their
school principal that
they have a team
teaching.
5. INNOVATOR(Innovates the curriculum)
 From the content,
strategies, ways of
holding, blocks of time,
ways of evaluating, kinds
of students and skills of
teachers, one cannot
find a single eternal
curriculum that would
perpetually fit.
“Creativity and innovation are
hallmarks of an excellent teacher.”
“A good teacher, therefore,
innovates the curriculum.”
FOR
EXAMPLE:
Teacher Paul, a Grade 6 P.E. teacher made his student
pass a Tiktok video of their chosen physical activity
(dancing, sports, games, other recreational activities)
as their alternative assessment in the new normal
learning.
6. IMPLEMENTOR(Implementor the curriculum)
An implementor gives
life to the curriculum
plan
It is here where
teaching as a science
and an art will be
observed, all the
elements of the
curriculum will come
into play
“The success of a recommended,
well-written and planned
curriculum depends on the
implementation.”
FOR
EXAMPLE:
Teacher Alfred has
studied the
standards,
competencies and
guidelines from
DepEd in teaching
Mother Tongue to
his Grade 1 learners
and he implements
these in his class.
7. EVALUATOR(Evaluates the curriculum)
Determines if:
the desired learning outcomes have been
achieved
the curriculum is working and brings out
desired results
the outcomes reveal anything
the learners are achieving
there are practices that needs to be
modified, terminated, or continued

Who am I as a Curricularist?
Based on the cases presented, identify
yourself as a Curricularist.
1. There is so much to do in one school
day. I seem not able to do all, but I have to
accomplish something for my learners. I
have made a daily activity plan to guide
me.
planner
_______________
2. I need a poem to celebrate the World
Teachers’ Day. I composed one to be used
in my class in Literature.
writer
_______________
3. Knowledge is limitless. What I learned in
college is not enough. I need to know
more, so I enrolled in the graduate school
to advance my learning.
knower
_______________
4. At the end of the year, my performance
as a teacher is reflected in the school
performance of the students. So I need to
provide a monitoring tool to measure how
they are progressing. The result will
inform me how I will address my learners’
weakness and enhance their strengths.
evaluator
_______________
5. I am teaching in a very far way barangay
with no electricity yet. Many of the
instructional aids for teaching sent to our
school are films and video tapes which
need power. I cannot use them, but the
lessons are very important. So I thought of
making an alternative activity. I took my
class to the river and waterfall instead of
doing the lesson.
